Performing an Infrared Camera Energy Audit, Flat Roof Inspection, and Other Applications


Flat roof infrared scans were first used to detect moisture and mold within flat and low slope roofs in the 1970's. Since then its usage has steadily increased with millions of square feet now inspected annually across the globe.

Infrared can be applied to built up (BUR) and single ply roofing systems where either an insulating deck or a layer of insulation is in direct & continuous contact with the underside of the roofing membrane. Thermography may be performed from aircraft or ground-based. With the proper equipment, and training, an infrared scan can detect and document problematic areas of moisture infiltration for all shapes and sizes of roofing structures.

Generally speaking a very sensitive and higher resolution infrared camera is used for flat roof infrared inspections. With higher reflective surfaces often requiring short wave infrared detectors, and for even higher reflective surfaces infrared is sometimes not a viable solution for detection of premature roof failure due to moisture intrusion

For many reasons, many building property managers and owners do not perform routine roof maintenance of any kind. Often the concept of if it isn't broken then there is no reason to fix it. If your area appeals to a certain ethnicity then you need to understand what that type of buyer looks for.

Here are some ideas, again, keeping in mind the neighborhood and your target buyers.

  1. Curb appeal is what will get buyers out of the car and into your home. Make sure your home is on par with your target homes. Could you add a couple of potted plants such as spiral topiaries or colorful flowers on the walkway? Anything to make it more welcoming.
  2. A backyard meant for entertaining. Adding a deck and barbeque area is appealing for those who are family centered.
  3. A built in high-end coffee maker in the kitchen is a real "pop item". You can also stress the amount of money you can save by brewing Starbucks-like coffee at home instead of buying out ($4 x 30 days - $120/month savings or $1,440 a year).
  4. A special feature in the bathroom such as frameless shower doors, a unique bowl-type sink or light fixture.
  5. Crown molding is always a welcome feature, but consider extra thick higher end molding for more affluent neighborhoods.?

Sand Casting - Make Durable and Complex Shapes

Have you seen the gas pipes in your home, which run from the basement to the rest of the house? The surfaces aren't quite smooth, are they? That's because the pipes were cast using the sand casting method.

Casting Process

This method of casting aluminium, brass, iron or other metal pipes will leave uneven surfaces that are somewhat rough to the touch. When aesthetics is not an issue, casting with sand is the best option. Briefly, molten liquid metal is poured into moulds made by forming cavities, which are a replica of the object desired, in a sand mixture. You then cool the metal in the mould. Once the sand becomes compact and the molten metal has hardened, you then remove the cast by breaking away the sand mould. You can smooth the rough texture on the surface of the cast with a grinding machine or by hammer preening and polishing. As the mould is broken to obtain the cast, you have to make a new mould each time you want to cast an object.

Cast Iron Items

The type of sand and the moulding process generally limits the accuracy of the objects cast. Hence you have to improve the finishing by grinding and polishing. You can cast a large iron bell or a small automotive part using the sand casting method. Iron foundries use an abundance of sand to cast table bases, bars and locks. Iron tables are often installed in shooting ranges where the strength, weight and durability of the table are of primary importance.

Disadvantages of casting with sand

Although this method of casting is still frequently used for metal pipes and other items, there are detriments to its use:

? Machining and finishing costs. As the surface texture of the cast is uneven, you have to incur heavy expense to improve the item through machine grinding and polishing.

? Material usage. You have to make a fresh mould each time you want to cast a new object. This is costly in terms of material used, as many sand moulds have to be made.

? Unusable casts. Due to the nature of the casting process, there is a risk of casting objects that cannot be used. This would result in wastage that increases the production costs.

? High spare parts. Horizontal moulding lines in factories require a high number of spare parts for its movable sections. This is compounded by the low productivity, which enables only 90 - 120 sand moulds to be made per hour for each moulding unit. Nevertheless, horizontal lines are most commonly used compared to vertical moulding lines, which are far more efficient, producing up to 550 sand moulds per hour with a 98% efficiency rate.

Sand casting is simple and popular technique to duplicate metals objects. You can make durable and complex shapes by using sand moulds. How to Choose a Basement Waterproofing Contractor

That way you can see how he'll be when he's in your home. Don't be afraid to ask plenty of questions, either -- if he gets annoyed, you'll know what he's like to work with.

Check those subcontractors. A basement waterproofing contractor who subcontracts his work isn't necessarily bad, but he is adding a layer of bureaucracy to the process. If possible, find a guy who, along with his staff, do all the work himself, including the billing.

Check out the menu before you buy. Your needs may extend beyond basement waterproofing, and a contractor who can help out with general remodeling or mold remediation is best. But don't go too far here -- a jack of all trades may be a master of none, and you need to make sure you're not hiring someone who agrees to a task he won't be able to complete.

I spend more time in my bed then anywhere else so I figured why not be as comfortable as possible with organic bed sheets. The organic way of life can be very expensive so that is why I started out with just the sheets. I couldn't afford the whole organic bedding at once. I figured if I would buy one bedding item at a time and that doing this the smart way wouldn't hurt my wallet as much and wouldn't seem like I was blowing my whole bank account at once.

Organic bed sheets feel fantastic and they are worth the money. It is true what they say you get what you pay for and I can feel the difference between run-of-the-mill bed sheets and organic ones. There are a few choices when picking bed sheets that are organic and I came to realize this when I started searching for something I thought would go well with the rest of my bedroom decor. For example there are lace, color sateen, no dye, color flannel, Wisteria, bamboo, and color damask sheets. I bought the regular no dye organic cotton sheets which turned out to be a smart choice.

What is next on my list would be to buy the organic pillow cases and then finally the comforter. Expect to pay a pretty penny for any type of organic bedding because the quality is superb. Nothing is more important when you own a home than maintaining it. Just the other week, I was talking to someone who was telling me about how her house was falling apart. She was in the middle of having work done on the house after over ten years of not making any updates to her house. Crawlspace Vapor Barrier Mythbusters


Outlined below are the most common 4 methods I have seen used in installing a vapor barrier. If you talk to different builders, you usually will end up with many different methods of installing a vapor barrier in a crawlspace. Here are the most common:

1. Pea Gravel on top of plastic vapor barrier - This has to be the all time dumbest thing I have ever seen, and yet it is probably one of the most common. I have had builders tell me that the plastic on the ground KEEPS ground water and moisture from coming up from the ground. Now if there is no moisture or water in the soil, this might be possible; but if that was the case there would be no need for the barrier in the first place. So here is the basic idea - ground floor (bottom) - plastic (middle) - 4" pea gravel fill (top). Once the crawl foundation is built, builders install a 4 - 6 mil plastic on the ground and dump about 4" - 6" of pea gravel on top of the plastic. Eventually, what always happens is that water comes in from the walls and the ground floor and ends up on top of the plastic. So what you end up with is a swimming pool liner that holds water in the gravel for prolonged periods of time. Nearly all the water and moisture in the gravel back fill has to evaporate into the structure. Another example of building practices and science turning a blind eye to crawlspaces for decades.

2. Vapor barrier on top of ground floor - By far the most common practice for installing a vapor barrier. A 6 mil polyethylene vapor barrier is placed over any ground floor. Here is the idea - ground floor (bottom) - plastic (top). The ground floor could be river rock, pea gravel, dirt floor, sand, etc. The seams are typically overlapped 6" - 12" and almost never taped. While this will temporarily stop some moisture evaporation, it does not seal out moisture from the internal perimeter wall where most water penetration occurs. Also moisture can come up from the seams, and the plastic is not durable enough to crawl on. It nearly always ends up with many punctures and holes in it.

3. Vapor barrier on bottom of floor joists - This is rarely seen, and usually only home owners attempt this. This is probably the method that accounts for more wood rot than any other method. If you are even thinking of doing this, quit thinking and call a professional to fix your crawlspace. Most crawlspaces are vented and the cooler surfaces such as duct work, pipes, and the floor will condensate in the summer. The plastic will trap the condensation up against the floor structure and mold and wood rot will occur. Good intentions do not always produce good results.

4. Vapor barrier fastened to sill plate - There is a new industry in crawlspace repair that encapsulates crawl spaces. The process of encapsulation is to install a heavy think plastic liner on the floor and up the foundation walls. The plastic liner is fastened and sealed to the foundation wall and all the overlapped seams are taped. Every potential gap or seam in the liner is meticulously sealed to prevent any moisture from evaporating. Then the vents are sealed in the encapsulation system to prevent hot humid air from entering in the summer. There is another system being sold and installed out there being represented as an encapsulation system, but is far from it.

This "other" system is a 6 mil plastic that is ran up the foundation walls and stapled to the sill plate. None of the overlapped seams are taped. It is basically a glorified vapor barrier on top of the ground floor being ran up the walls and stapled to the wood. They seal the vents without properly sealing the moisture from the ground floor or foundation walls. The problem with fastening plastic to the sill plate is that moisture will "wick" up the foundation wall, and moisture will absorb into the sill plate and floor joists. They are giving free access to all the moisture under the liner to rot the sill plates and floor joists. Not to mention that all the moisture will evaporate up through all of the seams that aren't taped and the plastic liner is only 6 mil and eventually will puncture and tear. Be very careful in the contractor you choose to properly encapsulate your crawlspace.

After the White House had been burned by the British in 1812, President James Madison was in the Octagon House, and the Treaty of Ghent was signed here. The houses are buildings of large brick in the classical tradition. They might be seen as a precursor, however, are somewhat distinct from the Victorian octagon houses which have essentially domestic structures.

A major supporter of octagonal houses was Orson Squire Fowler. The Things You Learn When Your House Breaks Down


When I moved into our newly constructed house there was a naive side of me that expected everything to work perfectly for at least the first five years. In hindsight, it seems to me that the best house to move into is a four to six year old home, after all the kinks have been worked out.

In the last month we have had a burst water pipe, cracked marble counter tops, halogen pot lights that seem to burn out the minute you change the bulb and a stubbornly clogged toilet (okay, so this last one may not have anything to do with the actual house). Currently our hotwater heater is making a strange humming noise and I'm waiting for the repair man to come and take a look.

On the positive side, I've learned a lot about lighting, marble, and plumbing which I thought I'd share with you so you can avoid the problems we've had.

Halogen potlights:

Angelo Bossi from Brak-Glan Electrical Service paid me a visit last week to take a look at my pot lights. Here's what he told me:

  • 130 volt lights are better than 120 volt lights. Power to your home is supplied at 120 volts, but sometimes you get a power surge and that can burst a bulb. The 130 volt bulbs are more expensive, but they last longer because they can absorb the surge.
  • If you're looking to lower your electricity consumption, there is a 9 Watt compact fluorescent bulb on the market that replaces your 50 Watt halogen. We have 17 potlights on our main floor alone which all tend to be on from from 7-9 in the morning and 4 to 10 at night. I did the math:
  • 17 halogen pot lights at 50 Watts each burning for 8 hours a day uses 6.8 kilowatt hours of electricity.? At $0.05/kilowatt hour the total cost works out to $0.34 per day or $124 per year.? If you used the 9 Watt bulbs instead, you use 1.224 kilowatt hours of electricity per day which would cost $0.06 per day. The total annual cost per year is $22.34. You'd save about $100 per year, so switching to CFL bulbs would pay for itself in about two years, less time if your lights are on longer or if electricity prices rise.

There are some things to be aware of with?these CFL?bulbs:

  • They are not dimmable.
  • They are more expensive than halogen bulbs (approximately $9 to $13 per bulb).
  • They take a few minutes to warm up and provide their full Wattage.
  • They come in a variety of? "colour temperatures" (a softer, yellow light to more day - blue light).
  • They're available at electrical supply stores.

Stone counter tops:

Whenever I tell a contractor our kitchen counter is marble there's usually the strangled sound of disbelief on the other end of the phone which roughly translates into? "Marble in the kitchen? What were you thinking?"

Although we didn't have a choice in finishes, I have to be honest and say that I liked the marble counter top when we moved in and I still like it - despite its prima dona, high maintenance ways. Of course if you look at it the wrong way it chips and it does need to be sealed on a regular basis, but it's got a nice European look to it.

However, I noticed a few months ago that there were a few hairline cracks emanating from various edges of the counter. A few on each side of the stove, and one out from the middle edge of the counter. The original installer came and epoxyed them right away, but they kept growing. Finally, the contractor sent in Peter Potopov from The Stone Doctor.

Peter has repaired the cracks so that they will not get any larger (but they'll always be there).

While I had always thought that the cracks had been caused by improper installation or the stove vibrating against the counter he said? that the house, still being new, hasn't finished settling yet. Apparently stone counter tops shouldn't really be installed for a few years after a house has been built. To support that theory he showed me a 1/4 cm. gap between the backsplash and the counter top.

Now, I figure that the stress fractures occur when a counter is affixed to the wall on two sides because there is less ability for it to move. Our island, which is also marble, is perfectly fine.

Final stone tip: You know it's time to reseal your counter top when a water spill leaves a dark mark after it's been cleaned up.

Plumbing:

I heard a hissing noise one day when I opened the front closet to get my coat. I felt the back wall of the closet and it was soaking wet. After the water was turned off, the plumber came and took the drywall apart. One of the water pipes had been punctured by a too long nail. Jim Davidson of Davidson Home Services said, "If they'd done the job right, they never would have used nails this long. If you miss the stud, you can puncture the plumbing or electrical wiring" - which is exactly what happened.

While Jim was repairing the burst pipe and the drywall I asked him if he'd please figure out why the second floor toilet was so backed up. We'd tried everything and couldn't get it unclogged. After he removed the toilet from the floor he found the culprit: Q-tips. Q-tips create a grate which is impossible to unblock with a plunger. Conclusion: don't flush Q-tips down the toilet!

I was amazed to see what kind of damage a fire hydrant could do to a house, when broken. It was like spraying hundreds of garden hoses on the roof of a house and watching the water cascade off like a powerful waterfall. I was simply amazed and still can't believe the damage I witnessed as the fire hydrant covered the entire house with water.

I might be getting a little carried away here but as a building contractor, I have seen the water damage a small leak, over a few years, concentrated on just one single part of the home can have. This fire hydrant broke in between two houses and was approximately 30 feet away from each home and was covering one of them with a blanket of water, while the other one looked like it was raining on the roof.

How can one home receive so much damage and the one next to it, located the same distance receive very little. I won't ever be able to figure that one out.

There was a small car in the driveway and it was getting pummeled by water. There's no way that this car couldn't have been damaged on the inside, with the amount of water that was flowing over it. Now the damage to the home was a different story. It almost looked like a little Barbie house with a fake car in the driveway and someone spraying water directly over the home.

There was no way that anyone could come in and out of the home without getting physically hurt from the large amounts of water that were flying in every direction. Looking back at the water damage I've repaired over the years and watching this fire hydrant terrorized this house and everything in it, makes me a firm believer in the power of water.

The fire hydrant was broken because a car ran into it. Most fire hydrants have a ring that is known as a breakaway ring, just in case someone was to run into it with a vehicle. The ring can be replaced a lot easier than the pipes beneath it, if they were to become damaged. Whoever came up with this design has saved an ungodly amount of money over the years from accidents like this.

UK Building Regulations

Spiral staircases have their own 'British Standard' dedicated to them - BS 5395 part 2. The BS is referred to in Building Regulations part K and ensures the spiral staircase is large enough for the given application. Within the document, spirals are divided into five categories, A-E with A being a secondary domestic spiral and E being a large fully public spiral. Each category dictates the relationship between the rise (height of each step) and going (depth of each step) and 'clear tread width' (the distance from the inside of the handrail to the centre column) required for the spirals' usage. Generally, the more people the spiral is providing access to, the larger diameter and the smaller the rise height, making it safer and more comfortable to climb.

Domestic Spiral Staircases

With domestic spirals there are two generally rules to adhere with - there should be no gap between the treads or the balustrade of more than 100mm, and the balustrade should not be constructed with climbable rails. Category A and B of BS 5395 deal with the measurement requirements for domestic spiral staircases. Category A is referred to as a secondary domestic spiral and category B covers spirals used as main stairs within a dwelling. The clear tread width of a secondary spiral should be 600mm which (depending on the specific model / design) gives a 1450mm diameter when taking into consideration the centre column and the balustrade to both sides. The height of each step should not exceed 220mm and the centre going should be at least 145mm. A spiral used as a main staircase should have a clear tread width of 800mm (1800mm diameter) and 220mm maximum rise and a 190mm minimum central going. Generally the opening in the floor for a spiral should be around 100mm larger than the diameter whether the opening is square / rectangular or circular. For example a 1600mm diameter spiral should have a 1700mm square or diameter opening. This is to allow for a 50mm 'knuckle gap' between the handrail and edge of floor / wall on both sides. The top step of a spiral staircase is normally an enlarged step which connects the centre column to the edge of the floor. This top landing platform can sometimes be shaped to allow for slightly smaller openings.

Commercial Spiral Staircases

Categories C-E of BS5395 covers the required dimensions for commercial staircases - those to be used by the public. The guidance ensures that people unfamiliar with the spiral can use it safely. With all commercial spirals staircases there is a requirement of a centre column handrail and a 'rest' platform if the flight consists of more than 16 risers. Category C is for a small semi-public stair and has to have a rise height of no more than 220mm and a clear tread width of 800mm. The diameter of this (with the centre column handrail in place) is therefore around 1900-2000mm. Category D is for a semi public stair serving more than 50 people. The regulation looks for a minimum rises of 190mm and a clear tread with of 900mm (2100mm diameter). Category E deals with spirals intended to be used by large number of people at one time - shopping centre or football stadium for instance. A 1000mm clear tread width is required along with a 190mm maximum rise and 250mm minimum going measurement.

The guidelines covered by BS5395 are subject to interpretation by planning offices and are not always set in stone. A relaxant is sometimes offered when, for example, one is replacing an existing spiral.

In that same line of thinking, assess your exterior doors. If you are going to replace the doorknobs, you should at least paint the door; and if you are going to put that much into them, perhaps it is time to get new doors and/or storm doors as well. Now let's take a look at the kitchen and bathrooms. Is it time to replace the caulk? I have shown homes that were stunningly decorated with a budget of thousands of dollars per room. I would have liked to tell the owner, "Remove 75% of the decor in this and every other room!" Please consider packing away some of the treasures that you have on display in your home and rotating them seasonally. This will give your home a fresh yet uncluttered look and will simplify your housekeeping. Not only that, if you are planning on making a move in the future, you will be partially packed!

Last but not least, the exterior. Don't let the paint or stain deteriorate and keep the roof and gutters in good repair. If your home is sided, replace missing corner pieces or damaged panels immediately while you can still match the color. If the home is sided with aluminum, consider getting it painted. Do these things now so that you will be able to enjoy them, not two weeks before you are considering putting your home on the market, when you have a million other things to take care of. Another do-it-now--the deck. According to the Cost vs. Value report, putting on a new wood deck will net you one of the best returns for your dollar of any addition you can make to your home.

And don't forget the landscaping. If you have bushes, trees and ground cover that are closer than 18 inches to your foundation, remove them now. All of these things will add thousands of dollars to the value of your home--or take it away if they are not maintained properly. Damp Proofing and Repairing Walls


For damp-proofing a brick foundation wall, heavy penetrating bituminous damp-proofing paint may be used, after which a cement mortar coat may be troweled directly on the painted surface, to prevent the paint from flaking and peeling.

The application of a coating of any material upon the inner surfaces of a wall such as a home sauna that is pervious to the sauna steam is generally ineffective. Infrared saunas need no such coating anyway.

This should be made of 1 part Portland cement and 3 parts of well graded sand mixed with as little water as practicable. The mortar should be applied to the dampened wall after the leakage through the wall has stopped. The finished coat should be kept damp for a week after it has set to increase its water-tightness.

Fresh air and sunshine are essential to a dry cellar, and to this end plenty of window space should be provided. When the air out of doors is cool and dry, open the windows freely. When there is dampness without, keep the windows closed, as warm, moist air results in mildew and condensation of moisture upon the colder surfaces within the cellar. A little care in these respects will aid materially in maintaining a dry cellar.

When there is dampness within, such as in bathrooms, windows should be kept open. Shower doors are not enough to protect against steam shower condensation. They do a fabulous job of keeping water inside, but steam will inevitably get out.

Cracks or fissures in foundation walls and the falling out of mortar from between joints may be attributed to various causes. Cracks between mortar and the material to which it was originally bonded may be caused by shrinkage of the mortar during setting, or soon thereafter, or by the expansion of mortar through saturation.

Often the volume change of the mortar is greater than the material to which it is bonded and sets up a movement that destroys the bond. If the walls are built on ground that will not support an equal weight at all points, uneven settlement may cause cracks to develop. An underground spring or flowing water under one corner or section of a foundation may produce similar results.

Small cracks thus started may become larger in time from action of the weather and other forces. Frost has a tendency to attack weak spots, and expansion and contraction, due to extremities of heat and cold, do their part in increasing the damage. Water seeping through the cracks gradually wears away the material and causes it to crumble and fall apart. The disintegration is generally more rapid in mortar joints.

The results of these failures are far-reaching and, if not remedied, may result in further damage, not only to the walls themselves but to the structure they support. A cellar will probably become damp and unsanitary if these inlets for moisture are not stopped up. There can also be drippage from the bathroom to rooms below, due to a leaky bathtub or bathroom faucet.

If the walls are otherwise in good condition, minor cracks and places where mortar has fallen out may be repaired by an unskilled workman. However, if a wall is badly cracked, crumbled and beyond the aid of minor repairs, it may be necessary to engage an experienced workman to reconstruct all or part of the wall.

Ideas to Make Your Cellar More Functional


If the cellar is dry and well built, it can often be made into an attractive place by putting in a ceiling, painting the walls and floor, and partitioning off the coal bin and furnace. It may then be used as a summer dining room, game room, or for other purposes if extra space is needed.

How to Repair an Awning


Like everything else exposed to the sun, wind, rain and other elements, your awning has been designed to withstand a lot of abuse during its lifetime. Both the frame and the fabric may need attention to extend their service and keep you safely out of the weather.

Mechanically, the awning must be able to be continuously folded and refolded if it is designed to be kept out of the way when not in use. This means wear and tear on pivot points, screws and other fasteners, handles and the fabric itself.

Even if your awning does not retract or fold, the awning components will age over time. Metal parts can eventually rust or otherwise degrade. Awning fabrics can lose their colors and become thin or torn.

Here are a few simple steps to take when you need to give your awning some tender loving care. They are also useful when you do routine maintenance.

Note: Work safely! Take adequate precautions by using safety glasses, masks and gloves as needed.

Check and Repair the Frame

Inspect the frame for any signs of rust or corrosion. Use a scratch pad to remove light rust deposits or a wire brush for heavier spots. If desired, finish by rubbing the area with a medium or fine grit (120-200 grit) piece of aluminum oxide sandpaper. As a final step, apply a thin layer of rust-inhibiting primer to seal the area and paint to match the rest of the frame or spray a clear sealer that has been designed for use on metals.

Straighten the frame if needed and replace broken or missing hinges, handles and fasteners. Tighten any loose screws on the frame as needed. Lubricate all moving parts with a suitable lubricant. Check with the manufacturer or your hardware store to determine which lubricant to use if you are unsure.

Check and Repair the Awning Fabric

Start with a thorough spraying of the awning itself with a hose or better still, use a bucket of warm sudsy water to gently brush the fabric to remove any surface dirt and grime. Remember to rinse thoroughly.

While your awning is drying, examine the fabric for rips and tears. Also take a look at the stitching to make sure it has not unraveled or become loose. Note the color and pattern on the fabric itself and the color and type of thread used to stitch it together. Restitch as needed, using a heavy exterior-grade thread.

To repair rips, obtain a matching piece of fabric and cut a piece that's approximately 1 inch larger all around than the rip itself. Trim any loose threads and glue the new material onto the underside of the awning, face up. Use an exterior adhesive for this repair. Check with your manufacturer, distributor or hardware store if you need help.

Finish Up

Let everything dry, and you're done! You can now enjoy your awning for many more years of service.

1. Clean your driveway! You can buy a cement washing/cleaning kit at your local home center for about 20 bucks. If your driveway is of decent size be sure to clean out the expansion joints and grooves that can accumulate years of dirt and debris.

2. Wash your windows. No, I mean really wash them. Clean the tracks, take the screens out and wash them with soap and water. Clean out the weep holes and wipe down the frames as well. If you have vinyl windows, wash them with some acetone (about 4 dollars at your local home center) and wipe down the frames inside and out to make your windows look brand new. 4. Replace the porch light. You can also find these on the clearance rack at the local home center. Nothing gives away the age of your home than the porch light. People will paint the house, replace the windows and re shingle the roof, but leave that same 20 year old porch light with faded glass panels and rusty frames. While you're at it, replace the doorbell as well. Little things make a huge difference. Many things the prospective buyer may not even consciously notice the little things but they add up quick and give the buyer that feeling of "ok I think this is the one, I don't know what it is, but this house is really speaking to me!"

5. Have a garage sale. Get rid of all extra items in your home, garage and backyard. If you can't sell it, and you aren't going to use it in the next few months, consider putting it in storage or keeping it at a relative's house. Any debris, clutter and "stuff" you can remove from your yard and garage will make it look bigger and more pleasing to the eye. I even recommend removing the garden hose and reel so the yard has a cleaner, crisper look. This isn't an article about removing clutter, there have been books written on that subject, but if you aren't going to use it in the near future, sell it. If it doesn't sell at a garage sale, try ebay, anything to get rid of all the junk. When your house/garage/sheds/closets are full to the top with junk and clutter, it really creates an eyesore and many people will judge how you took care of and maintained the house by this sight alone.

6. Help a neighbor. If your yard blends with the neighbors along one or both sides, offer to clean up his yard a little bit. Offer to mow his lawn for being such a great neighbor or tell him you have some extra plants that you can't find a place for and offer to plant them for him.

One of these on either side of your front window, painted with some left over paint from when you last painted your eaves will set your home apart from the others on your street.

8. Curb Appeal. Don't' forget about the actual curb! Your house doesn't start at the driveway; it includes the sidewalk, the curb, even the asphalt or street in front of your home. Are there large oil spots, is your house number painted clearly on the curb. Get your curb in order.

9. Re-screen your window screens. For about 20 dollars in mesh and a 4 dollar re-screening roller you can make your dusty, dirty, hole ridden, cat shredded screens look brand new. The Dangers of Carbon Monoxide


Your family is at risk for carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning if there are any appliances in your home that use gas, oil, coal or wood. Because carbon monoxide does not have any color, smell, or taste, it is not easy to determine when it is present. Carbon-based fuels are typically safe to use, but they become a health hazard when they do not burn properly.

When carbon monoxide is breathed into the body, it combines with the haemoglobin in the blood. Haemoglobin is the part of the red blood cells that carries oxygen to all parts of the body. When carbon monoxide is mixed with haemoglobin, the bodys cells, tissues, and organs cannot receive oxygen, and they begin to die. Over time, even small amounts of carbon monoxide in the blood over time can be fatal or cause paralysis and brain damage.
