Water Damaged Carpet, Wet Or Flooded - Things to Consider and What to Do - Do it Yourself Or Not?

Water damaged carpet? Questions to ask yourself :Where did the water come from? How old is the carpet? How long has the carpet been wet? What is the material, composition of the carpet, including the face fiber and backing? What is the sub-flooring made of: wood or concrete? What is the $ value of the carpet or rug? What type of installation is it, stretch in or glued down and to what type of sub-floor. What type of padding is under the carpet, age condition, composition. When water damage occurred was the carpet previously clean and well maintained or dirty? Were there pet urine issues prior to the water damage? Is the carpet the type that will shrink when exposed to excess moisture? These are the questions that every professional water damage contractor asks him or herself when developing a game plan remove or dry and restore water damaged carpet.

IMPORTANT. If the source of the water was a back flow from ANY drain line, whether it be from a TOILET, a sink or shower back flow, or a floor drain, regardless of the color or clarity of the water, DO NOT try the do it yourself approach. The water from these sources will probably contain disease causing organisms and should be handled by a professional. Remember, your health and safety are far more important than a water damaged carpet.

It is possible as a homeowner to dry a small area of the carpet your self if your are somewhat handy. You may only want to try the do it your self approach under the following circumstances. The affected area was water damaged by freshwater (say a bathroom sink overflow or a leaky supply line under a toilet). The incident happened the same day or previous evening. The area is less than 10 square feet and on the ground floor on top of a cement slab (do it your self dry out is never recommended on the second floor or above or on a home with a wooden sub-floor, call a professional water damage drying contractor for these issues). Nor is it recommended you try do it yourself carpet dry out if the water has come in contact with other porous building materials, such as drywall or baseboards made of multi-density fiber board. If wet carpet and pad have remained in contact or near these items for more than a few minutes, call a water damage professional. Should all these restrictive conditions be met, you may be able to dry the carpet yourself. First move all furniture and personal belongings away from the area. If the furniture legs are wet, place tin foil or plastic under them so they will not stain the area you have placed them. Next you will need a wet shop vacuum to extract the water in liquid form. Go over the area slowly, extracting as much water as possible. Volume wise, water in its liquid state is the easiest to remove from the carpet or floor. Gently and slowly pull the carpet away from the tack strip, starting in a corner closest to the water damaged area.

Ask your local tool rental supply company what tools to use to disengage carpet properly from its tack strip. If you have a glue down to slab installation, you would skip this step. Once you have gently pulled the carpet back, you may want use the wet shop vacuum to extract more water from the padding and cement sub floor. Spray mist a neutral PH disinfectant / sanitizer over the entire wet area. Allow the carpet to remain loose and place a fan down close to the wet carpet, padding and sub floor. You can either rent a fan from your local tool rental shop or you may have a large enough axial fan that will do the trick. Keep the area warm, either with a small space heater or your homes central heater. A more advance method would to be to rent a small dehumidifier from your local tool rental shop and place it near the fan(s) you have used. Rotate the fan around the area daily. Since porous building materials often feel "dry" before they are "actually dry" it is best to leave you drying equipment in place for at least two days past what feels dry to the touch. It is best to leave your drying equipment on steady in the area for 4-5 days. This will leave you with a dry carpet, pad and cement sub-floor. At this point you are ready to re-attach the carpeting to the tack strip.

Any situation beyond the restrictions listed above and you would be wise to contact a professional water damage drying contractor.

Benefits of Home Automation

Imagine you walk into your home after a hard day at office and every thing from the lights to the central heating system gets switched on automatically when you enter the house. You do not have to even make an effort to go to each switchboard to get them started. Now it has become possible to make this dream of yours come true with the technology of home automation. The basic purpose of home automation is to make things for the human beings more easy and comfortable. It is almost like in fairy tales where you clap and you get whatever you want without any effort.

The word automation is used to refer to a method of using automatic means to control a process so as to lessen the amount of human interference. This technology has become very popular in the manufacturing business where robots with a complicated built are used during the manufacture of laptops, mobiles, cars and many more such products. The use of automation system has made the manufacturing industry more efficient as lesser work force is required in the business.

At your house, home automation serves a similar purpose, which is to free you from all the hassles of managing everything. All homes possess some kind of technology, often an assortment of technologies. There are the lights, the heating system, the security system and many more. With the use of the home automation system you can enhance the existing equipments by automating them so that you can communicate with them without actually being near them to regulating them manually.

The home automation system works by breaking the existing equipments in the house into four categories of purpose that they serve. The first category includes lighting control. This helps you to turn the lights on and of remotely. They prove to be quite helpful for conserving energy. The next category involves home security. They integrate range of security mechanisms to protect you from intruders by not letting them enter your premises and alerting you before hand. The third category involves climate control. They play a crucial role in maintaining the temperature of the room automatically and also conserves energy by switching the system off when there is no one at home. The last category involves the automatic regulation of home entertainment. You can manage your music system and your television with the use of remote. You even have the option to create new settings where you can combine all these categories into one. For example you can have a party button which when switched on will dim the lights, pulls
down the blinds and plays your favorite music.

The functioning of all home automation system is based on relaying of signals. There are many techniques of performing this like Z-Wave (wireless), X10 and UPB (wired signals) and Insteon (wired and wireless combination). These systems also incorporate some system so that you can control the signals. Highly developed systems have central controls so that the user can control any part of the system. Technologies are also available so that you can control your system by phone or the computer or over the internet.

When to Hire a Company For Concrete Work

It is getting to that time of year when everyone seems to begin thinking about all the various home repair and remodeling projects that they would like to have done around the house. Even though there seems to be a never-ending list for a lot of people, the best thing to do is to make sure that you are starting with the most critical projects that need to be handled by professionals.

One of the most common projects is having concrete work done.

If you're planning on creating a fantastic outdoor space for your home, having a concrete patio created is an excellent option.? However, a concrete patio is not a job that a homeowner should tackle on their own. This is because concrete jobs that are not done correctly can cause problems down the road, and your guests will usually be able to tell whether or not the patio was done by a professional.

You may think that it's more costly to hire a professional, but often times this isn't the case.? On the contrary, by not hiring a professional, you may end up with a finished project that doesn't meet your expectations.? The quality of the job might also be less than perfect, making your new patio unable to hold up during all types of weather.? These types of issues end up costing you more in the end when you have to get the project fixed.? That's why it's typically best to rely on a professional concrete expert to take care of these types of projects for you.

However, that doesn't mean you have to spend a fortune.? You will need to make sure though that the company you call is offering good value for the money they charge. Do not feel afraid to research the company's background or ask for references. Companies that take pride in their work and have nothing to hide will not feel worried about providing you with such information. Feel free to shop around for the best offer, but always remember that you sometimes get what you pay for and that the total package might be more important than just the bottom-line price. Just because a company is cheap does not mean that they are worth the risk. Likewise, just because a company is expensive doesn't mean that they are the best company out there for concrete work.

Make sure that you are doing all of the research you need to do - and then go for it! You'll be glad to see how quick your concrete project can be completed when professionals are doing it. Leave the job for the experienced and you will be able to enjoy your perfect concrete patio or sidewalk in no time at all. The little bit of extra money up front for the work is always worth it - especially when you know that you'll be given excellent results and that you can trust the work to hold up over time.

Home Improvement Grants to Update Your Decor

If you are tired of your old outdated home but can't seem to scratch up the cash to give it a face lift, maybe you should consider a home improvement grant from the government. This is an amazing way to get most, or even all, of the repairs, remodeling, and redecorating you may need without having to pay for it yourself. So to speak anyway. This is free government money that you'll never have to pay back. But in a sense you've already paid for it. If you are an American taxpaying citizen over the age of eighteen, you have already invested gradually into it in your hard earned tax dollars.

Every year the government sets aside hundreds of millions of the American taxpayer's dollars for the specific purpose of returning it to them in cash awards to individuals who apply, and qualify for the various government funded grant programs. It is required by law that the government awards every cent of this money to all who apply and are found to be eligible.

And there are virtually hundreds of acceptable purposes for one to acquire these funds. Home improvement grants are rapidly becoming one of the most commonly awarded types of funding made available to the American public today because it enhances urban development and increases property values. A very good investment for the government while also living up to their fiscal responsibility to it's citizens.

If you'd like to find out if you're eligible to receive free government money to repair or remodel your home by availing home improvement grants, check the links below and begin searching the grant data base for your local government human resource agencies today. Two Reasons Why the Government Wants to Give You Free Money - Home Improvement Grants

It pretty safe to assume that most Americans would like to live in a home that is comfortable, nicely decorated and properly maintained. Unfortunately we can't always afford to, but home improvement grants can quite often help to make that dream a reality. There are many many ways that resourceful taxpaying American citizens can squeeze large amounts of free money out of the government, and home improvements are one of the most popular ways.

The government is well aware of the fact that pretty much everyone would like to beautify their homes, who doesn't? This fact is more than enough insurance to them that home improvement grants are an investment agreement made that will be kept. The government also has a responsibility to our country to aid in the rehabilitation and urban development of our nation's communities. Not to mention the fact that they are required, by law, to distribute millions of dollars in free government money to qualified American citizens who apply for it. These three reasons alone make the government more than willing to award free grant money to Americans who are embarking on home improvement or repair projects.

It's really quite simple. The government gives you free grant money to fix your home. This is essentially an improvement to you community...urban development. They have now achieved two of their own goals, while aiding you in yours. They have enhanced urban development and unloaded a hefty chunk of that free money they were required to give away. It's a winning situation for both parties.

As crazy as it sounds, isn't it time you helped out the government by taking some free money off of their hands?

Home Improvement Grants Beautify Your Home For Free

Would you like to redecorate or remodel your home, but don't have the funds to do it? You may qualify to receive free government money in home improvement grants to get those projects underway. No, this is not an urban legend. This type of financial assistance to American citizens does really exist and basically all you have to do is apply for it. Not everyone qualifies, there are a few minimal requirements, but many Americans have indeed found the help they needed through these amazing free government money programs. And you may be eligible to qualify too. Here are just a few ideas about what can be achieved by acquiring this type of funding...

If your family is growing and you need more space - How about building an addition to your home or remodeling that unsightly unfinished basement. If you qualify, home improvement grants may cover most, if not all, of that expense.

Maybe your kids grew up and moved out and you have too much space - Maybe it's time to think about having your property pay you back. Apply for funding to remodel that oversized single-family home into a duplex. Imagine having the construction fully financed and then being able to collect rent, every month, for life. You've basically created yourself a life long income at little or no cost to yourself. Many Americans have succeeded in this strategy.

You're just plain sick of that 1970's d?r - If your property is just a bit outdated and all you really want or need are some modern touches to bring you back into the new millennium, home improvement grants can help you do that too.

Whether your job at hand is small and decorative, or a total upheaval and reconstruction project, the government is more than willing to give you free money to help you finance it, providing you qualify. And most Americans do being that there are so few requirements. Check the links above to start searching the grants database for your home improvement grants today. Home Maintenance Tips For Safety

There are several home maintenance tips that should be taken note of from the standpoint of safety and health. First of all you must have regular schedule for safety items. There are several tests also that must be undertaken within the home on a regular basis. You must first of all test all smoke alarms and dust them. You can use a vacuum for this purpose. The smoke detector will fail to function wowing to spider webs and dust which may clog it.

Also you should check windows regularly to see that they can be easily raised. In case of a fire you may want to escape through the windows with your family and you will want it to open smoothly. You must also check the garage door on regular intervals and make sure it works smoothly. This is to avoid getting trapped inside.

The next set of home maintenance tips involve the things you have to do on a monthly basis for your home to run properly. You must run water on unused drains and also clean the showerhead to prevent clogging. You can also pour a little baking soda into all drains and run hot water. This will help to maintain them well.

The home maintenance tips also take into account the basement maintenance or the place where the furnace and hot water tank are located. If your furnace filter has become dirty, you must clean or replace it. You must also drain some water from your hot water tank. This will help to clear the dirt that gets settled at the bottom of the hot water tank. If this is left undone, then it can clog the water tank and you will find the tank does not work as efficiently as it should.

There are also several home maintenance tips for pet owners. If you have pets at home you must check the heat ducts, air conditioning filters and the refrigerator coils on a monthly basis. This is because pet hair can clog these items. By maintaining it properly, the hair can be kept to a minimum.

By following the aforesaid home maintenance tips, you can keep your home running more smoothly and efficiently. Appliances will also start working better and you may not need hiring a professional to solve problems. You can save a lot of money in this way which can be spent on a vacation instead.

Useful Home Improvement Suggestions

Before remodeling or renovating a home, take time to go through all the useful home improvement tips suggested by various online sites. Look for money savers and do not be in a hurry to rush through the jobs. Browse through books, catalogues at stores, and consult with technical people before employing anyone. Make sure you have an estimate of your plan and requirements and then hire a professional architect or designer who can assist you with your ideas.

Source out suppliers and supplies from manufacturing outlets

A useful home improvement suggestion offered is to buy furniture from manufacturing outlets directly rather than from departmental stores as this works out far cheaper generally. If you are planning to do the job yourself, you can order the components from a hardware shop or through a catalog. Rent out sanders instead of buying them to refinish your wooden floors. Save on kitchen cabinets if you want a face look by fixing new cabinet doors on old cabinet frames. You achieve a new look and can change the design effectively.

Take on do-it-yourself projects and save money

Mix and match old with the new by making your own bedspreads and swags or simple window curtains. Materials purchased at linen stores or thrift stores have all year round bargain counters. Stick to simple window treatments. Use bright colors and pretty designs to make the rooms come alive. Use dividers to carve out a new room if you want a change. Use mirrors strategically to create a feeling of space. Successfully use glass blocks to separate one area from another without detracting the light factor. Use fluorescent lighting strips to illuminate the area that needs highlighting.

Select the right paints.

Ceilings reflect surface defects easily, so make sure to use flat finishes on ceilings. Use primers and sealers as per instructions found on the containers. Avoid bargain basement sales, which generally sell over thinned paints. Buy paints from a reputed store. Use latex for walls and ceilings in bedrooms, living rooms and formal dining rooms. Latex gives you the flexibility of understanding the effect of a color or faux finish in a room. This is a useful home improvement suggestion as durable paint is more expensive and consumption is less when used over latex paint for the final touch. Use Oil-based paints and alkyds in bathrooms and kitchens where there is more wear and tear with frequent handling. Use glossier finishes where there is heavy traffic like kitchens, bathrooms, handrails stairway etc.

Useful Home Improvement Tips

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. A home generally reflects the personality of the residents. Interior designing plays an important role in deciding the form, texture and color that suits a particular home and the characteristics of the owners living there.

There are several useful tips that help home improvement. Look around you. What do you think requires attention? You may not have a designer or decorator and would like to improve on it yourself. Let us start with the entrance to your home. Does your home make a style statement? Do you live in an old rambling home or apartment? There are various styles ranging from Modern, Traditional, and Eclectic, Transitional etc. Choose the style you wish to adopt and hire a good interior designer with knowledge of building materials and styles and work in unison with him or her.

Choosing a theme is a useful home improvement tip. The sitting room generally is the area most frequented by your guests. Therefore, this area should be warm, inviting and care taken to maintain color co-ordination, which harmonizes with the surrounding rooms. Pay attention to the flooring. Decide whether you are going to carpet, tile the whole area, or have a combination of both. Color and design plays an important part here. Go along with the theme, be it Asian, Country, Rustic or Modern. Carpet the actual seating area and tile or board the rest of the floor. Wooden flooring has a charm of its own. Choose from a wide range of Parquet flooring.

Proper lighting plays a vital role in transforming the look of a home. Pay attention to this useful home improvement detailing. Create a bold visual impact with strategically placed concealed lighting or place lampshades in corners and alcoves to mellow the look to romantic or ethereal.

Lighting reflects your mood so plan the wiring detail carefully and make sure you have a few extra points to use as and when you decided to change the lighting moods.

Pay attention to the ceiling. It could be stark plain with a crown molding all around or a false ceiling created with concealed lighting. Chandeliers can hang from the centre if the room is huge enough in which case, make a design with false ceiling only along the sides and leave the central area clear for hanging lights. Staircases, inside the home, should look graceful and go along with the total look.

The benchmark of good designing reflects in the way the bathrooms and kitchen is done up. You can choose from numerous designs and materials from Home stores. Install modular kitchens and bathrooms after choosing the style, color, texture that suit you and the members of your family. Remember, your choice reflects the real you.

Last, but not least, secure your home to protect from burglary and theft. When building your home, use good quality materials and check for durability. Use these useful home improvement tips wisely when moving into your new home.

Secrets and Tips on Clutter Control

If you want to have a home that's clean and organized, you'll need to be able to keep your home clutter-free. It can become a challenge to do some serious cleaning if the clutter in your home is out of control. Before you can get down to the real task of cleaning, you'll need to do some de-cluttering and this can not only use up a lot of your time, but also your energy. By the time you're done de-cluttering the kitchen counter, for instance, you'd be tired to continue cleaning or maybe you don't have any more time to finish cleaning. The issue at hand then is how you can control clutter so you don't become overwhelmed by it. Here are some de-cluttering tips you can use right now.

The most common of all home clutter is paper clutter. Paper clutter can be the mail, bill statements, newspapers and magazines, paperwork your spouse brings home from the office, your children's school projects, etc. It doesn't take much time for paper clutter to accumulate; that small pile of unread mail or old newspapers can turn into a huge pile in just a matter of weeks.

So how do you tame the paper clutter beast? For one, make it a habit to go through your mail immediately - as soon as they're delivered. Have a garbage bin just for junk mail. Place all your junk mail in this bin and shred its contents every week or two weeks. Don't simply dispose of your junk mail without shredding, unless you want to be a victim of identity theft.

What about your other mail? Have a "To Do" basket and put your payable bills and statements in it. Keep the basket close by the phone or computer. This way, you're always reminded that you need to have them settled. File the other important papers right away. Avoid leaving them in a pile on your desk, telling yourself you'll deal with them later. Chances are you'll forget them.

The same applies for paperwork your spouse brings home with him from the office or for school projects your children take home with them. Assign a spot in the computer room or living room where your husband can keep his "to do" paperwork in one area. If your children have a study room, put a basket on each of their desks and have them put their current home work and projects on this basket.

If you want to keep all the things your children make, know that they can quickly clutter up their room or desk. That is, if you have no filing system set up. If it's really hard for you to throw away those old home work and art projects, get large plastic containers to store them. You can store these containers under your children's beds, or stack them up in the garage, basement or attic.

Don't let old newspapers and magazines pile up. If you intend to recycle them, find a place to store them and pile them up neatly. You can also assign a garbage bin just for disposing of old newspapers and magazines. Keep this bin close to your garbage can. Every time you empty your garbage, you can empty the bin too.

Paper clutter isn't the only type of clutter there is. Clutter can also be your old furniture, damaged or broken appliances, and old clothes. You're likely to be tempted to keep these things instead of disposing them when you're de-cluttering. Eventually, they'll accumulate to the point that it's become very difficult to clean the house.

So here's what you can do: ask yourself if a particular item is something you're likely to use again. For instance, if it's been more than a year since you've used a item, it's unlikely you'll use it again, so better just get rid of it because it's clutter. If it's still in good condition, you can donate it or sell it. If you're still undecided about an item, place it in storage for about 6 months. If you haven't used it by then, throw it away.

You can put seasonal items like clothes and decorations in storage. Buy several large stackable storage crates. Label each crate so it will be easy to find things later on: "Jenny's winter clothes," "Christmas and New Year decorations," "Paperback books".

As for items that are stained, broken or damaged, throw them away unless they are heirlooms or have any family or historical significance. This applies for any item, seasonal or non-seasonal. Unless you get rid of them, your home is going to continue to be clutter and cleaning is always going to be a challenging task.

Visual bird deterrents include Mylar flash tape, Scare Eye Diverters, and Balloons. There are also decoys like owls available. These items work best when hung right in front of a problem area. When the bird fly's towards the spot, they will see the visual deterrents and get confused or frightened, and want to avoid the area. ?

Sound Deterrents for Birds

Sound deterrents use recorded bird calls to deter pest birds from large open spaces. A mixture of predator calls, and distress calls can be used to alert birds in the surrounding area of danger. Most sound deterrents are weatherproof and designed for outdoor use. These are ideal to use when you have a large open space to treat. Sound deterrents include the Bird Chase Super Sonic.

Physical Bird Deterrents

Physical deterrents are used to block or prevent birds from gaining access to the area they desire. Physical deterrents include bird netting, and ledge products like the Bird Spike 2000, Bird Slope, and Bird Jolt Flat Track. Bird netting is installed as a screen to block birds from entering areas. Bird Spike, Bird Slope, Bird Gel and Jolt are all used on ledges to prevent birds from landing. ?

Liquid Bird Repellents

There are also a few liquid repellents used for discouraging birds. Pest control companies can work with fogging machines, or Misting units to deter birds from large open spaces.

Used in these two types of devices are a non toxic grape extract that irritate a birds mucous membranes. If you had a large tree in your backyard where hundreds of birds were congregating, you could call out a pest control company to fog or mist the tree to repel the birds.

There are also live bird traps, and a few other types of bird deterrents available. Knowing what type of bird you are having a problem with, and considering the area that is being affected will help in choosing the best product for the situation. Contacting a bird control company like Absolute Bird Control or Bird-B-Gone can also help ensure that you have chosen the right product. You also have the choice of calling a local pest control company, most pest control companies can help with a pest bird problem.

If this is the first year you are having problems with nesting birds, or had caught the problem too late, there is still hope. As long as you address the bird problem as soon as you notice it, and continue a campaign of harassment, you should have good luck in ridding your home of pest birds.

Super Uses For a Super Heavy Duty Battery

One thing about super heavy duty batteries is like they are the super heroes of the battery world. In a sense, they are the largest, the most durable and last the longest of them all, and their very powerful appearance would allude to the fact of the massive potential power that sits within its squat frame. Many people turn to these batteries when they need prolonged life in their gadgets - especially when they go out and about and plan to do so for long periods of time.

There are many types of these batteries in and around the market and the most common one is the PP3 battery, also known as the 9 volt battery, one of the more large and in charge battery versions out there. You would probably recognise it by its rectangular blocky shape and it is widely used for heavy duty equipment like smoke detectors, radio controlled toy cars and airplanes and even large digital clocks.

The battery has both a negative and a positive terminal on one end of the battery, and is designed with a snap fitting that it allows it to easily mate with the power connector, and makes polarisation of the unit all that much more easier. Within the battery, there are six alkaline or even carbon cells that have been arranged in a series and their size is normally of the AAAA category, which, on the market, is the smallest cell that you can find within a 9 volt battery. There are also rechargeable version on the market and you can find them in spades in your local hardware stores. The lithium versions actually last up to 5 times longer than the normal 'ultra life' 9 volt batteries out there, so you might want to look at that option for longer lasting power. Then there is the issue of the D battery, which is an electrochemical cell and the largest battery out there for use.

These massive heavy duty batteries are the largest available on the market and they are also pretty expensive, so getting the rechargeable versions make much more sense then getting the primary cells that you can only use once. These dry cells are normally made of up a single chamber or an electrode rod used to power the battery. Their typical capacity is about 6 times more powerful than normal AA batteries, so there is the question of size and performance here. This is an example of one of the better super heavy duty batteries out there, and there is also the C version of this battery, which is slightly less powerful but still about 3 times more powerful than the AA counterpart.

You can find these sorts of batteries pretty easily on the market and they can cost a pretty penny especially when you compare them to their normal counterparts. But for large equipment and portable multimedia devices, there is no other battery that can give the staying power other than the D super heavy duty battery.

How to Get a Dry Basement and Keep it That Way

When you have a basement under your home, there is nothing better than having a dry basement. Having one that is moist and smells musty all of the time can become rather irritating. This is especially true when that smell comes through the floor of your home and into your house. So if you don't have a dry basement and you are wondering how to get one and keep it that way, there are several things that you can do to make this possible.

Here is what you want to do:

? First, check the drainage systems around your home to make sure they are diverting water away from your home. Make sure shrubs are not too close to the foundation and plug any holes and cracks that may be in the walls. From there, you want to identify your biggest problem areas. You can usually tell because water leaves a white powder, which consists of mineral deposits.

? The next step is to dig a trench with a jackhammer around the basement walls.

? Cut a hole in the floor. This is the area that will hold your brand new sump pump. Make sure you take measurements before cutting the hole so that you can ensure a proper feet.

? You can put up bright walls to hide water stains and to create a barrier that will channel any water that comes through the walls into the trench.

? After the bright walls are installed, you can then install a series of drains in the trench. If you need other pipes, you can do this and use those pipes to channel water to the trench. The trench leads to the sump pump.

? Any spaces between the trench and the floor can be filled in with crushed rock to avoid any gaps.

Once this system is in place, the sump pump will pump the water outside of the home. Just make sure that the water is diverted away from the home via a drainage system so that the water does not come back into the basement. If it comes back into the basement, then you're dealing with a never ending cycle of water coming in and out. This can weaken your basement walls, can cause water to seep below the basement floors, and many other issues. Any time the walls and floors become weak, they crack. When they crack, more pressure is put on the walls of the home itself and this can cause them to crack as well. This also occurs when your home sits on soils that are known for shifting. Keeping the soils dry is the best way to keep this from happening. The only way you're going to keep them dry is to have a good drainage system outside of your home and to ensure that your basement stays dry.

You'll find that having a dry basement is a great way to save a lot of money on future repairs from water damage. So make sure you're high and dry and keep it that way.

Why Are Homes Sinking Into the Soil in Texas

There seems to be an issue in Texas with homes sinking into the soil once they are built. Even over time homes that once seemed stable have started to sink. So why is this? What is causing this very frustrating issue? It's frustrating because it leads to cracked foundations. Sometimes the damage can go beyond the foundation and affect the walls of the home.

The main issue that is a contributing factor is the building of homes and other structures on reclaimed ranchland and farmland. The soils on these lands are for agriculture. Building requires much more stable ground. When land has been farmed for long periods of time, it has been plowed, planted, harvested, and plowed again so much that it becomes soft. The loosened soil can extend many feet into the ground before stable ground is reached. These are called expansive soils and they threaten the structural integrity of homes if homes are built upon these soils.

Because cities in Texas are expanding, they are encroaching upon urban areas that were once used for farming. As the population grows, this is becoming more prevalent. This is especially an issue in the Blackland Prairie area where there are expansive or shifting soils. The city of Hutto sits in this area and is becoming a quickly growing city. It is being built on an area that was known for cotton farming and ranching and its urbanization is very recent.

Expansive soil is causing billions of dollars in damage in the United States, with Texas being one of the most affected areas. This is because these soils can expand by up to 30% when it has absorbed water. What this does is create a lot of pressure on concrete structures. The pressure that is generated has been measured to be as high as 15,000 pounds per square foot. What happens is the foundation heaves when it is wet and then it sinks when dry. Because of this the damage can be quite extensive.

According to the document "Foundations in Expansive Soils," the foundations and walls of residential structures are those that are affected the most. It doesn't matter if the building is one story, two story, or if it is pavement. There are four types of damage that occurs. Those types of damages are doming heave and edge heave. The doming heave is when an upward swelling of the soil occurs. This is something that happens over a period of years. The edge heave is the second type and is the type that tends to occur in areas where there are leaks or areas in which water tends to stand. This is when dry soil suddenly becomes wet. The third type is the cyclic heave, which is a cycle of expansion and contraction of the soil over time. The fourth type is lateral movement, which is where retaining walls and basement walls can bulge and fracture.

Fortunately, there are engineers and construction companies that are able to engineer foundations that do not succumb to the expansion and shifting of soil. They are able to construct new foundations that will withstand the changes and can repair foundations that have become damaged so that individuals can live in homes built upon the many soil types in Texas.

It is Possible to Finance Your Home Improvement Project Right Now

At this time there is this misconception that it is utterly impossible to finance any home improvement project. Much of this has to do with the state that the economy is in. Lending seems to be at a freeze, but it isn't completely frozen. Some individuals are not even trying to get financing for their home improvement project because they think they can't and they don't want the inquiry on their credit report.

If you are one of these individuals who think that it is impossible to finance your home improvement project, here are some ways that you can take care of it right now:

? Refinance your first mortgage - If you are on time with your mortgage payments and you have built equity in your home, refinance that mortgage and use the equity to finance your home improvement project. This tends to be the most common method amongst homeowners because it is actually the easiest.

? Taking out a second mortgage - Many individuals may choose not to refinance their first mortgage for the fact that they may have terms and conditions that are very beneficial to them. So this is when individuals will choose to take out a second mortgage. If there is enough equity in the home, the money can be adequate to conduct a home improvement project.

? A home improvement loan - You can simply go to your bank and tell them that you want to make improvements to your home. This is where you can simply get an unsecured loan that will pay for the improvements. Just make sure that your interest rate is reasonable and that you can make the monthly payments.

These are three great ways for you to get the money you need to take care of your home improvements. There are, however, things that must be taken into consideration. For instance, you have to ensure that the improvements made will increase the value of your home. It is important that the value is increased beyond the amount of the loan. You also need to make sure the monthly payments are something that you can afford because you don't want to default on a loan that is meant to improve your home. There are also possible tax consequences that need to be evaluated.

And when doing your home improvement project, it is important to make sure you stay on budget with the repairs so that you can do everything that you want to do. You definitely don't want to be halfway through the project and find out you're running out of money. So make sure that you have a system in place that helps you keep track of expenses. If at all possible, try to scope out material prices before the project starts so that you have an idea of what everything will cost. This will allow you to cut where you need to in order to meet budget. This is how you will make your financing really work for you and you can make it work for you right now.

Drilling a Water Well? Consider Dowsing For Water

Did you know that the art of water dowsing - or divining, or witching - goes back thousands of years, that it's still being used today and that some very serious people wouldn't dream of drilling a water well without first calling the water dowser?

I am not a water dowser trying to convert you: merely a property owner who had had two wells dug in the last twenty years.

First Well

My first experience with water divining goes back to the late 80s, in a small Mexican village where I had bought a tiny farm. Soon after I moved in, the well went dry, and besides, its location - downhill from the septic tank - was undesirable to say the least.

One day, as I drove around the countryside, I spotted a drilling rig, hard at work pounding the soil. I asked Jesus, the well driller, to come and have a look at my place.

He showed up later, accompanied by a member of his crew, who was holding a "Y" shaped stick in his hand. "First we have to see if there's water here", said the man, whom Jes?troduced as Carlos.

Holding a branch of the "Y" in each hand, Carlos walked back and forth on the property. Suddenly, the end of the stick shot down, with his hands following the movement.

"We will dig here", he said. "There's a good vein right here."

"Let me try it!", I said. He gave me one the branches of the "Y", and as we reached the spot, the stick jerked down with amazing force.

To make a long story short, we dug the well there, and found water at 80 meters, which was pretty good for that semi-arid part of Mexico, where it only rains in July and August.

Second Well

Fast-forward to 2008 in New Brunswick, Canada.

I have just purchased a property which has no water supply. All water there comes from private residential water wells.

One of the well drillers that I have contacted has made some very negative comments about the availability of good water in my part of the village. He says they have to go so deep that they might only find salty water. So bad is it that he refuses to drill there.

Then I hear about a well driller who uses old-fashioned "pounding" equiment, which, my informant says, is a far superior way of finding good veins at lesser depths. He suggests that before calling Mr. Mercer, the well driller, I have a certain Michael come over and "switch" for water.

Michael uses plain dowsing rods that he makes by bending wire coat hangers. Holding one in each hand, straight in front of him, he walks back and forth and looks for a vein, then another crossing the first one. Each time he "hits" water, the rods open to the side.

It was interesting to watch, but even more fun to try it for myself. And I can attest to the fact that the rods opened up when I reached the spot Michael had indicated! Not only that, as I stood there talking to him, one of the rods took off and hit me on the arm. And I swear that I had nothing to do with this.

We marked the best spot with bricks and sticks, and when Mr. Mercer drilled there he found good, clean and abundant water at a mere 70 feet.

Would he have found that vein had he drilled elsewhere? I will never know.

What I do know is if I ever have to drill another well, I'm not taking any chances. I'm calling the water diviner.

About Dowsing

If you'd like to learn about the history of dowsing, dowsing tools and how to use them, etc., there's plenty of information available on the Web.

A good place to start would be the dowsers' associations. There's one in most countries and they all have websites: in the U.S., it's the American Society of Dowsers; in Canada, the Canadian Society of Dowsers; in Britain, the British Society of Dowsers - to name a few.

Gina Bisaillon has been passionate about houses since she acquired her first property in the early 1970s. Since then she has owned and renovated houses in Quebec, Ontario, Mexico, and New Brunswick, where she is presently retrofitting a 1950s house to make it highly energy efficient

She is documenting this project step-by-step and dollar-by-dollar on her website, http://www.my-green-home-project.com

Her most recent water dowsing and well drilling adventure can be found at http://www.my-green-home-project.com/drilling-a-water-well.html

Add Tin Tiles to Your Fireplace

When you want to give your fireplace a gorgeously antiqued look, you'll find that one terrific way to do so is through the use of tin tiles. Tin tiles were once used on roofs and ceilings in American and Australian homes in place of the plaster detailing that was so prevalent in Europe, and though they began as a way to make up for the lack of plaster detailing, they grew into a lovely adornment in their own right. Now, instead of just using them on roofs and ceilings, why not put them on your fireplace front and see the beauty and class that they can add?

Tin tiles are one of the newest ways to add some elegance to a room, and you can be sure that they are going to stand out and shine to your guests. When you choose them carefully, they can be an amazing way to complement the look of your home and your furnishings. Tin can have a number of great finishes applied to it. For instance, if you are wanting to add a southwestern feel to your home, why not think about mocha-finished tin tiles? For something that is more Victorian, copper finished tin tiles are a great way to create the look that you are after. If you want something less shiny and more grave, why not look at tin tiles that have been given a cold black finish? This finsih can give you a look that is reminiscent of iron railings and curlicues.

When you are looking to install tin tiles on to your fireplace, there are a few things that you need to keep in mind. Before you do anything with the tiles, they are going to need to be cleaned in denatured alcohol. Make sure that if there is any sort of protective film that you remove it, because otherwise it will eventually cause the tiles to lose a great deal of shine further on down the line. Because you will be using decorative nails to put the tiles up, make sure that you choose nails that have a decorative head that is complementary to your tin tiles. When you go to nail the tin tiles down, remember that you should put the nails along the exposed edges on the tile. Be careful to nail down all sides of the tile!

When handling decorative tin tiles, remember that you are going to need leather gloves to handle them. They're beautiful, but they can also be quite sharp, so be careful not to slice yourself open on them! Similarly, when you go to overlap the tiles, if the design calls for it, remember that you may need to use tin snips to fit the tiles together snugly. Rather than starting your design from one side or another, start them from the center.

Tin tiles add a beautiful touch to your fireplace. A fireplace is a warm and cozy part of your home, so think about how pretty firelight will look, bouncing off of the polished surfaces of your tin tiles. This might be one of the most important decorative aspects that you can add to a room, so consider what your options are and what you can do to get the results that you want!

Various Handrail Materials

Some homeowners may not give proper attention to handrails but this tiny detail in your deck railing also has a big contribution to the overall functionality and style of the deck. Handrails are purposely designed to provide safety to homeowners as they climb to the deck. Apart from this, they also provide greater style to the deck and railings as well. You can easily find a handrail that covers both style and functionality without compromising its cost. With the advent of technology today and the gaining popularity of deck and outdoor living, manufacturers have found ways to let ordinary people afford the elegant and functional handrails and other deck components.

Today, handrails are made from various materials so you can have the freedom to choose of a handrail that would blend with your personal style and your needs as well. Some of the materials used on handrails today include wood, iron, steel and aluminum. All these offer many advantages so you just need to properly and meticulously study all these materials in order to reap the best benefits.

In the early days, handrails are only made from simple pieces so they are often ignored by many, giving greater importance on the appearance of the deck and railings. They are just simple pieces of pipes that are installed next to the walls, stairs, and ramps. But today, you can find handrails that are made from steel, wrought iron, aluminum, wood. Apart from this, handrails of today are elaborately designed. Homeowners can now choose from the excellent array of designs and materials of handrails. Even contractors and architects can help you find the best design in order to complete the look and feel of your stairs.

For those who are still novice when it comes to choosing the handrails whether for stairs, balconies and other applications, there are some considerations or factors that one has to know including the local regulation, cost, maintenance, design and a lot more. To know the codes of your area, you may consult to the accessibility standards that are included in the Americans With Disabilities Act or the ADA for the stairs and ramps. In most cases, the recommended dimension of the handrail is already included and the height should be between 34" and 38".

Handrails today are offered in steel, brass, glass, wood, banister and balustrades. Some actually prefer to use handrails that are made of metal while others want to have a more elaborate design such as the ones made from glass, iron and wrought iron. Meanwhile, the balustrades were once made from concrete and the cut stone are now made from materials that are light weight.

The metal handrails are preferred by homeowners who want their handrails to last a lifetime. You must know that wood and glass may easily break or succumb to damage. And the wrought iron can be relatively expensive and may need regular maintenance so this is not a practical choice.

As a conclusion, handrails must be durable and attractive enough so you can achieve full satisfaction.

If you want to be able to find and have storage space for all of your items in your closet, you can start tearing out the walls, or you can start using space saving hangers such as the ones in Huggable Hanger Sets. Huggable Hangers are much more space efficient than traditional "fat" hangers. Using slim hangers is only the beginning. Huggable Hanger Sets include other specialty space saving hanger styles such as cascading hangers and over the door hooks.

There are tiered hanger styles that allow multiple pairs of slacks to he hung vertically on in one traditional hanger space.

There are also tiered hangers for women's skirts that can hold up to 5 garments at once, again in the space of one traditional hanger. These types of hangers utilizes vertical space all the way to your closet floor, so be sure to hang the longest dress or skirts first, so that they do not drag the ground.

Tiered hangers are also a super way to organize the children's closets. It is now very simple and convenient to separate complete outfits into single hanger sets (whether for yourself or your kids. This and other simple time saving techniques will not only make your family's closet space more organized, it will also save you substantial time and hassle every day getting the children out the door during the morning rush.

Now your ties will be right where you left them, in one spot, well organized, and easily accessible from you Huggable Hanger tie and belt tiered hanger hook.

Cascading hooks are a novel device used to double up on shirts, as tiered hangers allow multiple slacks to hang together. Cascading hooks allow you to color coordinate or otherwise categorize your clothing into hanging "sets". Group your long sleeved shirts and your short sleeved, your colors, or your whites. The choices are endless and solely based on what you want.

Because of this organizational simplicity, Cascading hooks very popular and useful to display clothing in shops and boutiques, where sorting by size or seasonal color is now as simple as a changing a single hanger set.

When considering the use of cascading hanger hooks, be aware that you need to use sturdy hooks and hangers, like the ones available in the Joy Mangano Huggable Hanger Sets collection or the weight of the clothing and hangers may not allow them to hold up. It is always best when trying to save space by using cascading hanger hooks, that you use slimmed hangers, and not traditional, fat, bulky ones. This can cause damage to your cascading hanger hooks due to the unneeded, extra weight.

Bridging Gap Between Contractors and Homeowners

Are you a homeowner, looking for someone to take care of your home repairs? If you are, perhaps you should look to the Internet to help you locate the right contractor. You can find contractors to renovate a home, redo the flooring, or build new extensions. The traditional way of looking for a contractor means you have to look for contacts in a print directory and then contact them one by one.

The problem with this approach is that it is very time consuming. After contacting a few companies, what you have achieved is that you have acquired just a handful of quotations. After that, you then proceed to compare the quotations and evaluate the companies. You finally approach the company that is most affordable and provide the best service.

Fortunately, the Internet now allows you to reach out to as many companies as possible. For example, you can visit a bidding website, and post your project details. Registration is free, and you do not have to worry about paying any fees. Once you have an account created, you can start posting your project. Include as much details as possible about your needs and wants. Doing this will enable contractors to provide you with more accurate quotations.

After the project has been posted, contractors will then bid on your project. The more bids your project receives the more options you have. You can view each bid individually, and at your own leisure. At the website, you will also be able to view the full company profile of the contractors.

One great advantage of posting your project on the website is that you get to enjoy a wide range of choices. That usually means that you get to choose to work with a contractor that not only offers great service, but competitive pricing as well. However, you should be mindful not to choose based on price alone. Instead, you should be very clear in your mind what a reasonable price should be. That way, you know whether the quotation is fair or not.

You should also read the reviews that are posted by other homeowners. Watch what others are saying about the companies. If a contractor has a track record of providing excellent service, you have a better chance of hiring a reliable contractor. On the other hand, if a contractor has a negative record, be sure to head for the opposite direction.

You want to be as careful as you can when selecting contractors. This is because once the project starts, there is no turning back. If the contractor gives you a lot of problems, there is very little you can do. Firing your contractor will only lead to spending more money.

That is why it is wise to look for contractors on the Internet. The Internet offers a level of transparency that is second to none. So start your search on a bidding website today.

What is a Closet System?

Everyone has had to clean out the closet at one point or another. Once the rubble has been cleared, you are left with a rod, some hangers, and all of your clothing. After hanging up all the clothes you can, the rest is put into boxes, or even worse, drawers, or even on the closet floor. You need a closet system, bad.

Closet systems are the best kept secret of interior decorators and designers alike. No two closet systems are exactly the same, but without one, the results are consistent, wasted space, chaos, and possible damaged clothing.

There is a much better way. Just like any other room, your closet is simply a geometric space to be filled. Do not let the single rod and pile of hangers limit your closet potential. With the help of a closet system, you could be drastically improving your open space usage, making things easy to locate, display, and even rotate. Most closets have only 50% or less of their area put to good use, and part of that is wasted on bulky traditional hangers and horizontal cramming. It's no wonder people complain of not having enough closet space.

Visually appealing, time savers, and organizational masterpieces, closet storage systems are the perfect way to have the closet you always dreamed of without calling in the contractors.

With hooks, racks, hangers, and collapsible storage boxes, a basic closet storage system package would get you a long way on the road to closet perfection.

One of the pieces of storage equipment that is standard in most systems is the cascading hanger hook. These hooks allow you to link more than one item in a vertical chain, saving you up to 150% of the room taking up by hanging the same items on single hangers. Slimmer yet stronger hangers than wooden or plastic hangers, withstand greater weights awhile preventing wrinkles offer a great improvement over the weak, clothing distorting hangers currently still used by many people.

Why use your closet for storing hangers when it should be used to hold your personal clothing and accessories?

These are just a few of the example of product solutions that are often considered when choosing a closet system. It has already been stated that no two closet systems are alike, because the options are limitless. You need to take into consideration the types of clothing you have, your other storage needs, and any aesthetic wishes you may have. The sky is the limit. With a closet storage system in place, it might be hard to leave your wardrobe.

Home Improvement May Not Be For Everybody - Tips For Homeowners

Dealing with frustrating repair and improvement projects is an unwelcome prospect for many homeowners. The hassle and frustration they so often experience is not worth the effort they are putting in, so hiring a professional to help them with the more complicated projects is a good idea. Once they decide to do the work themselves, homeowners usually end up regretting their decision and scouring the phone book for a contractor.

With extensive home improvement projects, homeowners are usually best served hiring a contractor. Some homeowners do attempt these projects themselves with some success, but these are often few and far between. Not that they cannot accomplish the project, but the quality homeowners receive from contractors far exceeds what they are usually able to provide themselves. Home improvement is not for everybody, so realizing when it is far above their head is important and helpful in avoiding a costly project. Spending more money than they realize doing the work themselves, many homeowners regret their decision.

The training and experience a contractor brings to the table will help ensure the quality of the project. Helping with the planning and development stage of the project and providing excellent craftsmanship, professionals are able to provide a level of service far better than any amateur trying to pass themselves off as professionals. So when it comes time to choose the best route to take when facing home improvement projects, it is usually best to consider the work of a contractor. It may be one of the best decisions the homeowner can make for their home.

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning (A Safety Advisory For All Portable Generator Users)

I've often asked myself, "Why doesn't my industry put forth more effort in educating consumers and the public at large about (CMP) carbon monoxide poisoning that stems from the improper use of generators?" Take note of these heartbreaking incidents.

In February 2009, John Stigall of Shakertown, Kentucky, a beloved businessman and chairman of the Boyle County Industrial Foundation, was found dead of accidental carbon monoxide poisoning from a portable generator. The couple that found him, described him as lying down near the generator.

In December 2008, Richard and Diane Desjardins of Haverhill, Massachusetts barely survived carbon monoxide poisoning. They were said to have placed their generator inside the cellar to keep their sump pump running during an ice storm.

In December 2006, five members of a Vietnamese family in Seattle, Washington, perished from (CMP). They had a generator running in the family's garage after a windstorm knocked out power to the region.

In December 2008, 49-year-old Larry Jenkins, also in Massachusetts, succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning. After the power went out in his camper, he resorted to using a portable generator. This list seems like its never ending. Hopefully you do more than get the point. Be proactive! If you know anyone who owns and/or uses a portable generator, ask him or her have they taken precautions to prevent a (CMP) accident.

Here are some startling facts. Did you know that most people never read their manuals unless they have a problem that are unable to resolve. This is critical because almost every manual that I've read includes warnings about (CMP) and how to avoid potential hazards.

Did you know that many of the incidents of carbon monoxide poisoning occur during power outages? Of course this stands to reason; this is when you'll find a high percentage of individuals unwittingly operating gasoline powered portable generators inside their homes or near windows or doors. Heed this revelation; when portable generators are placed near windows and doors and in areas such as garages, basements, sheds and other enclosed spaces, the risk of (CMP) multiplies threefold!

Why is (CMP) so deadly? Mainly due to the fact that the gas is tasteless, colorless, odorless and is non-irritant. You can't see it. You can't smell it. You can't taste it and it doesn't cause any easily identifiable tell tale signs. People who survived CMP described the symptoms they felt as being flu like, or similar to food poisoning or other common illnesses. The danger in that is, most people have a tendency to lie down when they feel sick and when it comes to carbon monoxide poisoning; lying down is something you never want to do.

That's why you must heed warnings such this and take these proper precautions. First and foremost, never but never place a portable generator indoors. Not even for a few moments. It doesn't take long for the average person to be overcome with (CMP). Secondly, make sure you install a carbon monoxide detector on every level of your residence. These detectors make it easy to detect (CO) in your home, mobile home, RV or other living quarters. It acts much like a fire alarm; if it detects any CO in the air, it emits a screeching beep. Thirdly, don't assume anything; read your generator manual from the front cover to the back jacket. They wrote it to protect you and make using a generator a safe and enjoyable experience.

When it comes to generators, Joe Elliot is your man! He literally shows you the power. What We HAVE: Unbiased reviews information and prices, on virtually every generator on the market. The Best Firewood

Searching for the best firewood is worth your cash. It will be an easy task once you learn about the heat principles of different woods. Sometimes mixtures of different hard woods result into best firewood that burns for longer time. Heating equivalents are to be considered for determining the best result. It can be a combination of sufficient quality and quantity for satisfying your requirements.

Seasoned firewood

Seasoned firewood is the wood that is left out for drying for an extended time. Using it cut out fresh will provide best results. Using this type instead of green lumber will avoid moisture and smoke. Larger wood logs require a longer period of time to heat up and finally burn. Small cuts provide the best burning results.

Energy Content - BTU

It is the measure of the quantity of heat that is emanated by burning firewood. Hardwood has the highest of the BTU contents and thus would be considered as best firewood for intense and high heat. Rock elm, red oak and sugar maple are some examples of hardwood. The softwoods like the basswood, white pine, white spruce, green ash are less dense in nature and thus don't burn for a long time.

Softwood versus the Hardwood

Comparing the softwood with hardwood will be beneficial to get the best firewood in business. Hardwood is originated from deciduous trees whereas softwood is from conifer trees. Few hardwoods are found softer compared to softwoods. Hardwoods are chemically similar to softwoods whereas they differ is in their density. Hardwood are denser compared to softwood.

Hardwood examples

The some examples:

Red Oak
Beech
White Oak,
Ash
Hard Maple
Hickory
Dogwood
Pecan
Almond Apple.

These all are easy to burn, produce high amounts of heat, have no heavy kind of smoke.

Good firewood includes:

Cherry
Soft Maple
Walnut.

These firewood types are easy to burn but they don't give heavy smoke.

Fair firewood includes:

Sycamore
Elm
Basswood
Cottonwood
Aspen
Yellow Poplar
Gun.

These firewood types offer medium amounts of heat, produces medium amounts of smoke, could be a little hard to burn, and doesn't produce much heat.

Free Grant Money For Home Repair and Improvement

The government provides free grant money for a lot of different reasons, and home repair grants are one of the many ways that American citizens can take advantage of these programs. Depending on the programs your local community government offers, and the state or federal grant programs you choose to apply for, you could receive the cash you need to fix and update your home for free.

What exactly does it mean to get money for free? Just that. When obtained, this is cash that you can spend and will never be asked to pay it back. That is, of course, as long as you use the funds for the intended purpose of the grant.

You can visit your City Hall to check with your local government agencies and inquire about the home grants that you may qualify for. Some of the grants that are available will provide you with the cash you need to completely rehabilitate your house or even expand your home. Other grants may help you pay for labor or material costs. In some cases you may simply receive a tax credit for installing energy efficient appliances.

Whatever the case, there are numerous government grants available, and home improvement grants are just a small sliver of the money that has been allocated to be given away. And since this is money that never has to be repaid, it may very well be worth some minimal effort in finding the cash that is available for you to claim.

Instantly access to the database to find your real estate grants. See how much you can qualify to receive and obtain your check in as little as 7 days just by asking for free grant money...

The Transformation of Electric Fires

The increase in sales of electric fires in recent years suggests that these products have been a real success story. In this article we look at their transformation. How have these products been improved and updated to appeal to more consumers?

An electric fire was once the sign of a property that wasn't quite as modern as it could be. Gas central heating was a more modern and cost effective way to heat a home. If someone was making use of an electric appliance then it often suggested that they were living in a property that did not have central heating.

Yet times have certainly changed. It's now quite common to see electric fires being used in all sorts of properties, including houses, restaurants and bars that are clearly aiming for a modern look. So why should this be the case? What has changed to make these appliances more desirable?

Looking closely at this success story, it's possible to identify a number of changes that have all come together to help explain the improving situation. The first is that manufacturers have been looking to improve the products in order to make them more desirable. This is particularly obvious in the case of wall mounted fires. These appliances often give out relatively little heat, but it seems that heating is no longer their primary purpose. They are being chosen because they look good and add atmosphere to a room, as well as that sense of contemporary style.

So what about electric fire suites? These are sold as a means of providing heat, so why have they become so popular? One key reason is that many home owners love the thought of having a roaring fire blazing away in the fireplace.

Unfortunately, this is not always possible to achieve, particularly in newer properties where there may even not be a chimney. In order to get the same effect, many people have looked for alternatives. Electric fire suites are perfect because they offer flexibility and ease of installation.

Most importantly, they don't need to make use of an existing open fireplace. In fact, they allow you to create the effect of a fireplace. With a wide range of products available, you can choose a model that suits your home and your family. Given improvements in design and the flexibility that they offer, it's not surprising that electric fires are appearing in more and more homes.

More on electric fires and electric fire suites is available online, as discussed by Keith Barrett. This article may be used by any website publisher, though this resource box must always be included in full.

Why Buy an Electric Fire Suite?

Electric fire suites have been growing in popularity over recent years. In this article we take a look at that increase in popularity and why it is that you might consider buying one of these products. If you're not familiar with what an electric fire suite looks like then let's start by describing these products and the way in which they work. They basically consist of two aspects. The first is a fireplace surround, which can be made from a range of materials.

The second element is an electric fire. This appliance is integrated within the fireplace surround to ensure that you have one single unit. Electric fire technology has improved considerably in recent years and modern fires do a really good job of creating a flame effect similar to that produced by a gas, coal or wood burning fire. As you'll hopefully have gathered from this description, what these products do is to create something that has the look and feel of a more traditional fireplace. They also give out the heat that you need in order to heat a room.

So why are people choosing to buy them? Why not, for instance, simply opt to make use of a coal fire?

There are a number of advantages to fire suites. The first is that they require a lot less hassle to use. There's none of the mess that you get with a coal or wood burning fire. They're also extremely easy to install - most require nothing more than simply being plugged in.

Another major selling point is that they're ideal for those who don't have a chimney or open fireplace. Since they are placed against an interior wall, they don't require an open fireplace. In this respect, they differ from inset electric fires. This is particularly good news for those living in newer properties. In effect, you are purchasing something that creates the look of a fireplace but for a fraction of the cost.

They also offer a good deal more flexibility. If you're intending to move home in the near future then that's no problem - you can simply take your electric fireplace suite with you. Considering all of these advantages, it really comes as no surprise that these stylish, contemporary products have become so popular.

More on fireplaces and electric fire suites is available online, as discussed by Keith Barrett. This article may be used by any website publisher, though this resource box must always be included in full.

Are Electric Fires Products of the Past?

Some products seem to have hints of past times about them. No doubt you have recalled items and wondered whether they are still being manufactured and who would buy them. In this article we take a look at electric fires, considering why it seems that they are coming back into fashion. When I think of an electric fire I tend to think of an old appliance sat in the corner, warming a room with a slightly unusual heat. They are mainly associated as being used in properties where there was no central heating system in place.

With most new properties having been constructed to include central heating systems, it seems sensible to imagine that less and less people would be using electric fires. Yet this seems to be the complete opposite of what many heating experts are saying.

Speaking to one retailer recently, I was struck by his comments about electric fires. He noted that sales were up by almost 60% over the course of the past two years. I wondered aloud whether this was because home owners were concerned about the rising cost of gas.

On the contrary. He suggested that the main reason was that many people like the look of modern electric fires. They weren't simply being used to heat properties - they were now being used to provide a sense of style. Indeed, he suggested that many families now even look upon them as being status symbols.

This is quite a transformation for the humble old electric fire. Taking a look around his showroom, I soon saw why it was that they were being seen in a new light. It became clear that manufacturers had been working on new designs and on improving the way in which these appliances work. The flame effects, for example, were a big improvement on those that I remembered. It was also noticeable how many fires seemed to be supplied as part of a larger appliance. They were often integrated into a fireplace surround to create a product that is known in the business as an electric fire suite.

These suites enable people living in new properties, or those without a chimney, to create the effect of a fireplace. It was a very convincing effect too. Far from slowly disappearing, it seems that electric fires have been growing in popularity. Was I tempted to buy a new electric fire while I was in the showroom? Briefly perhaps, but I soon spotted that they were much cheaper online!

More on fireplaces and electric fire suites is available online, as discussed by Keith Barrett. This article may be used by any website publisher, though this resource box must always be included in full.

How to Choose the Best Tradesman to Carry Out Work

Choosing the right tradesman to carry work out for you can be a very difficult and stressful task. Generally the work that people need a tradesman to carry out is going to be expensive so ensuring that you get someone who will give you the best possible value for money as well as carry out the work to an acceptable standard is very important. So what can you do to ensure that you find the best tradesman for your job?

There are a few things that you can do to try to separate the wheat from the chaff when looking to employ a tradesman to do work for you, most of which involve nothing more than a little common sense and a little bit of effort.

The first thing that most of us will do when speaking to a tradesman is arrange an appointment to meet up and discuss and look at the job that needs carrying out. If he turns up late for your appointment is that a sign of things to come? How many times have we all arranged for a plumber or builder to turn up to do work for us only for him to let us down? If a tradesman who is looking to get work from you cannot turn up on time for the initial meeting there is little chance of him turning up to carry out the work at an agreed time.

You should also take a note of what vehicle the tradesman is driving, if he turns up in a battered old van which looks like it has just been pulled from the scrap yard then this may also give you cause for concern.

The clothing that the tradesman is wearing should also give you an indication to the standard of work that you might expect. It is more likely that a tradesman who takes pride in his appearance will take pride in his work. Generally a good reputable workman will have nice clean workwear, possibly bearing the name and logo of his business. A tradesman who is happy to wear the name of his business on his workwear has got to be a good sign.

And the final thing that you should look into is where the tradesman has been working recently, with a view to speaking to these clients as to the standard of work carried out. A good honest tradesman will be more than happy to let you know where his old customers are as there is no better recommendation than word of mouth.

Things to Consider When Building a Second Floor Addition

Building a second floor addition onto a single story home has become a very popular option for home owners looking for additional living space without the hassle of uprooting their family. However, you should keep in mind that building any home addition is a major enterprise and that building a second story is not a simple undertaking. Here are a few things to consider.

Verify the local zoning laws of your neighborhood. Some zoning laws restrict the construction of second floor addition because it will impact the aesthetics of the neighborhood or create other issues to adjacent properties.

Local building codes should also be examined to ensure that a second floor addition onto an existing single story home is allowed. One thing to consider is the home's existing foundation. In order to determine if the foundation can support a second floor, you will need to enlist the help of a building inspector, foundation contractor or an architect who will examine the existing foundation. Adding a second story onto a ranch style home will create significantly more load on the concrete footing and the foundation walls. The footings and foundation walls are typically built wider and stronger for two story homes which means that you will most likely need to reinforce your existing foundation.

Before removing the roof of your home, you will need to plan for potential obstacles that will need to be addressed. For example:

- What is the size of the ceiling joists? Can they support a second floor?

- Are there mechanical elements such as plumbing, electrical and HVAC running on the top of existing ceiling joists?

- Are there any utilities attached to the existing roof and how much overhang does it have?

- Is the roof sheeting made of plywood or 1x boards?

- How many layers of shingles are on the existing roof?

- Are there any stacks or flues protruding through the roof such as vent pipes, fireplace chimney or furnace flue?

The mechanical infrastructure of your home will also need to be carefully examined. Elements such as the heating, plumbing and electrical will need to be upgraded and modified to support the second story addition. Typically, a larger furnace and electrical panel will need to be installed.

There may be some repair costs associated with your second story addition. Although your contractor will make every effort to ensure that the integrity of the main floor is maintained, inherently there are risks of damage to the first floor's walls and ceilings. This type of damage frequently occurs while the roof is being removed and while the second floor addition is being constructed.

The cost of building a second story addition onto a single story home is relatively expensive on a cost per square foot basis. Typically, there is a 30 to 50% premium for adding a second story over the standard construction costs per square foot. However, the alternative of selling your home and buying a new one is, in most case, a more expensive alternative. Keep in mind that you may be able to tap into your home equity or take out a home renovation loans to cover the costs of your second story addition, making your dream of a larger home a reality.
