The Rise of the Waterfall Faucet

Throughout time there have been many items whose design has stayed the same across time, and among these has been the simple faucet.

The faucet remains what it always has been - a valve that controls the release of water - and has only in recent year received a make over to bring it into the modern world.

Along with a choice of new designs and styles, and the use of new materials and methods, the faucet has moved from being a simple utility item that has looked the same for as long as we remember to being an important item in the armoury of the interior designer.

Lately, however, the faucet has taken on an extra identity, one that adds beauty and innovation to any bathroom or kitchen, and brings with it a new way of looking at the way water is poured - the waterfall faucet.

Decorative and functional

A decorative, useful, and often beautiful device the waterfall faucet is devised to dispense water upwards, across a plate or saucer that then lets it fall, in the waterfall described, downwards in a graceful and beautiful manner.

Waterfall faucets are fitted the same way as ordinary varieties, hence need no extra plumbing, and come in many different shapes and sizes, and materials and styles.

Popular for the man who wants a modern look is the glass waterfall faucet, an item that features a saucer or dish that is mounted on the end of a chrome or ceramic support, and looks beautiful in conjunction with the modern trend for glass sinks.

Glass of many colours

The glass version is available in many colours, too, and can be twinned with a matching glass sink for best effect or used with stainless steel items for a very modern look indeed.

An interesting take on the idea is the chrome version that appears, from a distance, to be a standard dispensing faucet of very modern design, but when brought into use is seen to be dispensing from the top and allowing the water to roll down a channel before being dropped into the bowl.

Waterfall faucets have added a new dimension to interior design, particularly in bathrooms, and have come into their own with the use of modern ceramic and glass manufacture to create a new and innovative idea that changes the thinking on the standard faucet as simply a water dispenser.

Design on a new level

With a waterfall faucet, the design of the bathroom sink can be taken to new heights in an effort to achieve individuality and beauty, as well as keeping to the requirements of functionality and simplicity at the same time.

With the popularity of the item growing, the range available is vast in both number and style and you will be able to use the large number of manufacturers and suppliers to find the item that best fits the look and design that you want to achieve.

Waterfall faucets are available in a wide range of prices, with one sure to be available to fit every budget.

What You Need to Know Before Buying Kitchen Sinks

Before choosing and buying a kitchen sink, these are some of the basic things you should know. Kitchen sinks have three major designs: the single bowl, the double bowl and the triple bowl sink. The names of the designs indicate how many sink bowls they have. The double bowl, which is said to be the most common, may have different-sized bowls or identical-sized ones. The double bowl design allows you to do two things at once. A sponge can be placed in the third bowl in the triple bowl design.

When considering which form your kitchen sink should be, consider the space allotted for it. If it is not very big, consider using the single bowl since a double or triple bowl design may not allow for a large container to fit. The depth of the bowl is also important. Deeper sinks lessen splashes but it may increase the need for bending over the sink. Also, take into account the under-counter space when determining the proper bowl depth.

Another aspect of kitchen sink design is mounting. With a top-mount sink, a hole is cut into the countertop and the sink is placed in it, with its edges resting on the countertop. An under-mount sink, on the other hand, is attached to the countertop from below. In contrast to the top-mount sink, the edges of the countertop surrounding the sink must be cleanly cut since they are visible. Sealants are also used to ensure that under-mount set-up is watertight. Another kind of mount is the apron kitchen sink. It is so called because it has an "apron" that hangs over the side of the countertop where the sink is perched.

Various materials can be used to make kitchen sinks. One of the most common materials used for sinks is stainless steel. This is a good quality material that rates well in terms of durability, cost-effectiveness and maintenance. This kind of sink is quite sturdy and good quality stainless steel sinks are generally not as noisy some people would expect. Another material used for kitchen sinks is porcelain on cast iron. This material is unaffected by heat or cold but it can be damaged by forceful blows.

Enamel on cast iron or on steel is another alternative. They are resistant to heat and cold and they are easy to clean but like porcelain, heavy blows can damage the sink. If the enamel is damaged, the underlying metal is prone to rusting. There are also kitchen sinks made of solid materials like granite. These are matched with countertop materials to create a chic, modern look. Scratches on these materials can be removed through sanding. The downside of this material, however, is the fact that some of them can crack under heavy force.

Another thing to consider when choosing sinks is the tapping arrangement. If you intend on having many sink accessories, such as a sprayer and a soap dispenser, you have to consider how they will be arranged around the sink bowl. Function is more important than form. What may look good is not necessarily what is best for you and your kitchen, so choose wisely.

Ceramic Tile Counter Tops Are a Great Project You Can Do Yourself

Ceramic tile counter tops solve several problems especially in kitchens. They are hard so they don't dent. They'll last for decades with little care. Water or any liquids don't bother them. Plus they look so cool and stay great looking. Professionals install most counter tops, but with a little information most anyone can do the job. Here's how you start.

Choosing the tile is one of the biggest problems. That's because there are so many choices. Cost may help you narrow down the choice. Your budget may rule out some choices. Among the more pricey options are marble, granite and slate. But if you do it yourself you have more money for something like granite countertops.

Planning the tile job includes looking at the materials you'll need. You'll need about 10 percent more tiles than the area to be covered to allow for breakage and trim. Will you be doing a back splash? How will you trim the edges and corners? Also think about the backing. The base for installing tile is critical. You can install tile over many other surfaces, but each surface has special preparation requirements. Often tile setters put down cement backerboard as a base.

One of the challenges with countertop tile is the obstacles like sinks, stoves, electrical outlets and others. You may need some help with removing some of these or at least some direction. Be especially careful with electrical outlets. Make sure you know what you are doing.

Once the obstacles are out of the way, laying ceramic tile counter tops is much like laying a floor. Decide exactly where you wish to start and plan ahead for where you want cut tiles. Balance is the key. Don't end up with some little cut narrow tile pieces in a very visible spot. Lay out the dry tiles with the proper spacing so you can see exactly how everything will look before you start cutting tiles and applying adhesives.

The Beauty of Having an Undermount Sink

When it comes to remodeling kitchens or bathrooms it has been found that undermount sinks are quite popular choice with most of the folks. Undermount sinks facilitate the dual benefits-first of hygiene, wherein they look clean, and second is the modern sleek appeal. Moreover they provide with easy maintenance feature, as the sink fits under the countertops. One can wipe off with ease any unwanted debris into the sink without the fear of the dirt and grime being accumulated or getting held between the sink and countertop lip.

It is recommended when considering an undermount sink that it would be ideal to use solid surface countertops (ideally granite and marble or any other stone). Countertops of other materials have a flip side to it. For example a laminate countertop would delaminate because of the water and moisture in the kitchens and bathrooms, eventually the countertop would bubble up.

Kitchen sinks can be chosen from the as single, double and triple bowl configuration options based on individual requirements. Bathroom sinks provide more options with sizes and shapes. Once the sink configuration and size is selected, the next major concern is to cut or drill the hole in the countertop. Each manufacturer has a specified process of fastening or assembling the sink to the countertop. The new sinks come with a template which helps in marking for the hole to be cut for fastening the sink to the countertop. There are countertop installers who provide tailor made cutting options for the countertops installations as required. Some manufacturers also have precut countertops, making the installation process simple and easy.

Enjoy the beauty of having an undermount sink.

Kitchen Appliances - The Essentials of the Modern Kitchen

The kitchen is the center of any home, the part of the house which provides sustenance and everyone seems to be consciously and unconsciously attached to it. Have you ever wondered why at a party everyone is always lingering around the kitchen and people have great conversations, laugh more and feel more comfortable? Some of most people's oldest childhood memories are from the kitchen, surrounded by rest of the family and they tend to always be positive memories. Eating gives positive responses, so from a psychological point of view, entering a kitchen also gives positive emotions.

With the kitchen not being used just for cooking anymore, but also sometimes for eating and entertaining guests, the kitchen has to be large enough and properly designed with the appropriate cooking appliances. Home appliances do not have to be just a commodity anymore, but from a interior design point of view one of the most important focus points. In New York, New Jersey and Connecticut the most popular appliance models are stainless steel ones, which stands out stylishly with any color furniture, paint or floor.

Almost all modern kitchens in the New York, New Jersey and Connecticut area are typically equipped with a stove and a microwave oven. Latest modern kitchen appliances include a dishwasher, which is a great time saver. The most recent fashion trend in expensive kitchens is having the appliances such as the refrigerator be part of the counters, called built in of counter depth appliances. This saves space and makes the kitchen look complete and living room like. Modern looking range hoods are also a must have to keep the kitchen smell free. Cook tops, which are installed directly in your counter tops, are a great way to replace the old range which took up a lot of space. Other than using the oven from the range, a wall oven can be installed in the counter or wall for saving space and adding flare.

Although the main function of a kitchen is supposed to be cooking or preparing food, the kitchen can be the center of other activities as well. Sometimes, the kitchen is the most comforting room in a house, where family and visitors tend to congregate, so many New York, New Jersey and Connecticut residents are looking for a proper, welcoming and modern kitchen. How to Choose Your Next Blender

There are various types of blenders on the market, so you should think about what you are going to use it for. This will determine which kind of blender will meet your needs the best. Some blenders are very expensive and offer many different options but if you only want a blender to make smoothies, you will not need one like that. You can also get blenders which are like food processors. This means they can dice, slice, cut and crush nearly any ingredient you need.

You might want to check out ordinary blenders first. These are basic but can do a variety of jobs. You might want to look at handheld blenders, also known as immersion blenders, if you prefer a portable piece of equipment.

An immersion blender is a stick type gadget with a blade at one end. You can use it to make various drinks such as smoothies and shakes. You can also use this type of blender to thicken sauces or puree soups. Immersion blenders are less powerful than regular blenders but they are convenient because of their portability and small size.

If you want something more heavy duty, you might want to look at food processors. These are powerful, high performance machines which can dice, chop, crush, mince and more. There are a few different things to watch out for, when shopping for a blender, no matter which type you are looking for. You might like to find a blender with a design you like. If you have space in your kitchen, you can keep the blender on a counter top, which means it will be on permanent display, so choose something that will look good in your kitchen and match your other appliances.

Plastic-based blenders come in different colors. Decide whether you prefer a plastic or metal base. Metal tends to be more expensive but it does keep the appliance steadier when in use. Is there a feeder in the lid? This will allow you to drop ingredients into the blender while it is running without having to remove the whole lid.

Different blenders have different features. Check how many speeds it has. The speeds allow you to do different things with the machine. Blenders offering higher power usually perform a lot better than cheaper models with lower power options. A pulsing option can be useful too.

What type of container does the blender have? It might be stainless steel, glass or plastic. Each of these materials has pros and cons. A glass container will not rattle as much as a plastic one but is likely to break if you drop it on a hard floor! Plastic containers can get scratched easily and can absorb smells more easily than glass or steel containers. Glass is easier to clean. Steel containers can get dented easily. Check out the warranty and service options and make sure the blender you are looking at has all the features you will need.

Are Reverse Osmosis Water Units Better Than Water Filters

Which is better for giving you pure water, reverse osmosis water units or water filter systems? That all depends on who you talk to. But if you want to go by research and statistics the water filter is best. Let me give you both sides of the argument and you can decide.?
?
Reverse osmosis systemes remove all minerals from the water that passes through them. Thus making demineralized water.?Some very negative things happen when you drink water that has been stripped of its natural minerals. Demineralized water contains more hydrogen, and?its pH is below seven making it more acidic. Any time you consume an acidic substance, your body will pull minerals from your teeth and bones to produce bicarbonate to neutralize the acid. As if that wasn't enough, it has been proven that when body fluids are more acidic rather than alkaline, production of free radicals goes up, increasing cancer risks.?
?
Filtered water on the other hand has contaminants filtered out, but the natural trace minerals are left in. Nowhere on the face of the Earth can you?find natural demineralized water. In nature, water contains traces of the?natural minerals like calcium, magnesium, and potassium. Your body needs these minerals to stay healthy.?
?
It is a proven fact that the healthiest water is produced by selective filtration products. These are filtering products that can remove contaminants and leave the minerals. Reverse osmosis systemes do not do this.??
?
Filter purification systems filter the water as it passes through the filter. You lose very little water. Reverse osmosis water units waste a lot of water and thus money. They recover only 5 to 15 percent of the water going through the system. The remainder is waste water. It carries with it the rejected contaminants. Waste water is usually run out through the house drains and will add to the load on the household septic system. Reverse osmosis systemes delivering 5 gallons of treated water per day may discharge 25 gallons of waste water per day to the septic system. Making these systems more expensive to operate. If you pay for your water and sewer, your water bill will go up.
?
Reverse osmosis systemes require electricity to operate, so your electric bill will also go up. Water filter systems do not run on electricity. They are more cost effective.

Another big problem with reverse osmosis water units is what they don't remove. They remove the minerals, but they don't remove the chemical contaminants. Chemical contamination is one of the biggest problems we face. Over a thousand cancer causing chemicals have been found in tap water.

They also do not remove bacteria. From a health standpoint, this is one of the biggest disadvantages of reverse osmosis systems.
?
If you compare the facts water filtration systems win every issue over reverse osmosis water units. Anyone who is informed, would find the decision on which system to buy an easy choice.

Advantages of a Silicone Cooking Utensil

In this day and age, one is not surprised to learn that silicone, which used to be a component for computers, microchips and breast implants is now a common material used for cooking utensils. A silicone cooking utensil can actually have a competitive price with cooking utensils made from metal and nylon. There are a variety of cooking utensils that utilize silicone. One common structure for a silicone cooking utensil is to have a wooden handle. This is especially true for spatulas, spoons and others.

There are also many bake ware that are made from silicone. These silicone bake ware needs a firm surface to be laid on if you wish for the cake or to maintain the square or rectangular form you put it in.

Why Use A Silicone Cooking Utensil?

Kitchenware is usually exposed to constant heat and even cold. This is one of the main reasons why a silicone cooking utensil is great for the job. Silicone can withstand heat which can be more than the average stove temperature or oven temperature. It does not lose its form when exposed to heat or cold and silicone also does not retain any smells or colors from the previous foods it has been exposed to. A silicone cooking utensil is also resilient when it comes to being cleaned or washed.

Silicone cooking utensils also have the distinct advantage of not being corrosive to ordinary pr common kitchen substances. It also does not corrode or react negatively to exposure to heat and then cold or vice versa. This means that your silicon cooking utensil will probably last longer than the other kitchen utensils you have with the right care and attention.

One advantage of using a silicone cooking utensil is its gentleness when it comes to dealing with non-stick surfaces. Silicone is softer than wood and can not scratch or damage the surface of non stick pots and pans. Bake ware made from nonstick materials are also exposed to less risk of damage and scratches when the baker uses silicone cooking utensils. Some people may not be aware of it but scratched and damaged nonstick cooking utensils need to be disposed of because exposure to the substances of the scratched surface can lead to cancer and other serious conditions.

These are just several of the advantages of using a silicone cooking utensil. The price of a silicone cooking utensils may seem high but the longevity and sturdiness of the product make sit worthwhile.

Water Filtration System Options - What You Should Know BEFORE You Buy

Let's face it. We are living in an era where having a quality water filtration system is absolutely essential to our ongoing health. Did you know that water filtration systems in the home have become almost as commonplace as having a toaster or microwave? The reason is obvious...people have become painfully aware of the dangers that lurk in our water supplies.

The good news is that, as consumers, we can take measures to protect ourselves. However, before you invest in any type of water filtering system for your home, there's a few things you should know.

If you are thinking of buying a water filtration system, the first place to start is finding out exactly what contaminants exist in your local water supply. This is fairly easy to do. Contact your local water company and request the "Annual Water Quality Report". Once you know what contaminants are in your water, you will be in a better position to know what type of filter to look for.

Next, you need to know what the most dangerous chemicals are and which type of water filtration system removes them. The following is a list of the most dangerous chemicals, along with a brief explanation of why they are considered so:

Chlorine: is a "known" poison. It reacts to sediment, bark, leaves and organic matter, creating Trihalomethanes (THM's) and other toxic substances. Trihalomethanes can have formalin and formaldehyde in it, which are carcinogenic, no matter how small the amount.

Lead: remains in the tissue forever, particularly brain tissue. This is a toxin that affects people in accordance with their body weight. Because of this, an adult can fend off the ill effects for quite awhile. For children, however, it is a different story because it can cause "permanent" brain and developmental effects.

Asbestos: another potential carcinogen that originates from either abestos-lined water pipes or in areas where serpentine rock is plentiful.

Cysts: includes parasites, protozoa and microscopic worms. Biggest offenders is cryptosporidia and giardia, known to cause death in people with weaker immune systems, and also causes major dehydration, intestinal disorders and diarrhea.

Now that you aware of the most dangerous contaminants, the following provides a quick overview of the most effective types of filtering methods used:

  • Ultraviolet Light - removes bacteria and other micro-organisms, however, does not remove chloride or fluoride.
  • Distillation - removes lead, mercury, fluoride and bacteria. Downside is that is also removes essential minerals that are good for the body, and is a bit pricey because it uses a lot of electricity.
  • Reverse Osmosis - removes sodium, inorganic compounds, lead and copper. However, it does waste a lot of water and is high maintenance.
  • Carbon Filters (Activated Charcoal) - removes chlorine and trihalomethanes (THMs). Filter needs to be changed on regular basis or water flow suffers.

So there you have it. There's no doubt that water filtration is important, so a little research is in order. Do your homework by finding out what the contaminants exist in your local water supply. Once armed with this information you will know what type of water filtration system will best suit your needs and budget.

E.L. Ward is an avid researcher of some of today's most pressing health issues. During her latest research, she discovered what she believes to be the best water filtering systems on the market today. She runs an informational website that provides the results of her findings. Tips For Organizing Your Kitchen

Take one look in a woman's kitchen and you reveal a great deal about a woman. You can find out a lot about her style and personality through the colors, counter tops, materials, accessories and appliances she stores there. Is she funky and retro in style or traditional and classic? Is she organized and structured with her personality or is she fly by the seat of her pants?

Think about it most people's homes in general reveal a lot about their own personal style and tastes as well as their personality. Fun-loving, happy go lucky people usually have a lot of color in their homes and may or may not have a more haphazard work area in their kitchens with very little focus on organization and systems.

On the other hand a Type A, organized, traditional styled person tends to have calmer colors and a very structured organized group of systems in their kitchen helping them to keep it all in order, just like they like it.

The systems that a Type A person might use are usually set up to make life easier for them. Their pantry is divided into types of food, canned food, all lined up either by type or maybe even in alphabetical order. The breads and snacks might go together on another shelf and then spices and other condiments are probably together as well. Each and everything has its place and an order in which it was placed there.

The Type A personality also has a system in place for their meals. She is most likely a meal planner and has a specific grocery day, for which she always makes a list. Having a grocery list hanging on her fridge allows her to add to the list at any point during her week. She then uses her pantry system to easily locate items she has on hand and create a meal plan from those items, saving her both time and money when it comes to meal planning. For a Type A person this is merely a way of life, but it can be true for you as well. Just take into account how the Type A person thinks and what she feels is important, sure you might not want to implement every system that a Type A person uses, however you can use one or two of her systems and make your life and your kitchen a little more "organized".

So, head to the kitchen and create your own "system" for the your food, meals and life.

Enjoy a New Kitchen For Less

Remodeling your kitchen is one the easiest ways to increase the value of your home. Some minor improvements can go a long way towards really changing the look of the kitchen and increasing the value of your home. You do not have to undergo a major home improvement project to do this, though. It is easy to do a few simple things that are not too time consuming and that do not cost a lot.

There are three major parts to your kitchen that when updated can do a major improvement to the whole look of the kitchen. The cabinet doors are the first place to start. If you do not think they are in good enough shape to use then you can replace them. However, if they are still in good shape you can refinish them or paint them. You can even dress them up with stencils or a creative finish. The countertop is often an area that could use major improvement.

It is a very harshly used area. You may not need to completely tear them out, though. If they have a top covering which is a thin layer of vinyl or laminate them that can be removed and replaced. If they are made of other materials then a deep cleaning and refinishing may be a good idea. This can save a ton of money since replacement can be quite extensive. The last area is the flooring. A wood flooring can be refinished. If you have a vinyl flooring then you may go ahead and replace it. You can usually get some fine deals on flooring that will help keep the cost down. Installation is usually pretty straightforward and something you can do yourself.

Once you have updated the cabinets, countertops and flooring in your kitchen you will be amazed at how great your kitchen looks. New kitchen refacing can make s huge difference. Doing just these things will also save you quite a bit of time and money. You may also want to give your kitchen a major cleaning as well to just give it that fresh and clean look. You may also want to begin thinking about moving on to other updates to finish your new kitchen looks, such as replacing worn windows and doors. To finish up you may want to update appliances. However, with just these three major projects done, your kitchen will look great. You may find this is all you need to do in order to freshen up your kitchen.

The essayist Peter Mason is really passionate about ideas relating to kitchen cabinet doors and refinishing kitchen cabinets. His abstracts on kitchen refacing can be encountered on his webpage in addition to other online sites.

The Insiders Guide to Professionally Installing Kitchen Handles and Knobs

For a start, fitting kitchen cupboard and door handles is quite a simple process. As with most home D.I.Y projects, time and preparation are the key factors to a proper job. First things first, think of what tools you have at hand. Described below are 3 different methods for measuring and fitting handles. These 3 methods are a guide to show some of the most popular ways to fit kitchen handles to get you going. Read them through to see which best suits your skill level and the tools you have at hand, or think up your own way using some of these ideas. Happy reading.

Method # 1
Limited tools? This may be the way for you.
Start off with a piece or card. Look for something with a square edge larger than your handle. Try an old cereal box, it should be big enough and should have square edges.

Next hold the handle up against your door and take a measurement of roughly where you want the handle positioned from the top and side. Plot these measurements on the card by measuring the distance of each hole from the edges of your door and make sure the hole centres (the distance from the centre of both holes) are exactly the same as your handle. If you are installing knobs you only need to do the one hole (sorry that one was obvious)

Note: this is your template so take your time to get this right!
Tip: Test your template out on a spare piece of wood first to check the holes are the correct distance apart, and that the handle is correctly positioned.

Hold the template up against the door, maybe use a strip or two of masking tape to hold the template in place. To ensure the template is positioned correctly try holding a stop on the door edges (a piece of wood or any flat block) to push the card up to.

When the card is positioned use an awl to push through the marked points on the card and mark the hole points on the door. If you do not have an awl use any sharp pointed device that will mark the door like a skewer or wood screw.

Remove the card template, note down the hole positions from the top and side of the door and make sure the hole centres are accurate. Hold the handle up against these marks to make sure you are still happy with the positioning and then drill the holes.

Finally screw the handles onto the door being careful not to over tighten these are usually only M4 screws (metric 4mm diameter) as standard and do not need to be tightened using both hands!
Mark out and drill all the other doors, making sure you check all the markings before you drill to make sure they are all uniform. For left and right handed doors just turn the card over.

Method # 2
Do you have a set square?
If you are pretty handy with a set square and a ruler/tape measure this method may be as quick or quicker than the previous method.

To prevent marking the door use some masking tape to cover the edges and place a strip where you wish the handle to go roughly. Hold the handle up to the door and measure where the holes are going.

Draw the tape measure down from the top of the door and mark (horizontal line) the distance from the top of the door for the first hole then mark the second hole distance (making sure the hole centres are exact).

Then take the set square and mark on it (use some masking take on the surface if it's hard to mark) the measurement from the edge of the door. Now just run the set square down the side of the door and mark (vertical line) the position for the holes. This will be the point where the horizontal lines already on the door meet the mark on your set square.

Method # 3
Got all the tools?
The best way to fit handles or do anything repetitive by hand is to have a good jig. What the heck is a jig? A jig is a device used to repeatedly mark out a measurement(s). If you have a hole punch with a paper guide that sticks out the bottom - that's a type of jig.

If you have a large kitchen or fit kitchens it is well worth the time in making a decent jig for the job.

To make a simple yet accurate jig start with a piece of plywood or plank 19mm will be plenty sturdy enough but not thinner than 12mm. Cut it down to size to accommodate the handle size and the distance from the side and top. Make sure you have two square edges to work with and all cuts are square. As with the paper jig mark out the hole positions and drill the jig, double checking all measurements before drilling.

Next get two lengths of smooth (ideally planed) wood and screw them to the two square edges on the jig. These lengths of wood must be wide enough to overhang the thickness of the ply by about an inch either side. This will allow the jig to be used for both left and right hand drilling.

It is as simple as that. The only thing to remember when making any jig is to keep all edges square and straight. Take your time and double check all your measurements to ensure a proper job.
Remember you don't need to be far out with your measurements to notice the difference and the more you look at it the more it will stand out.

Golden rule #1: Measure twice cut once (or in this case drill)

Fight the Drought With Hot Water!

At first it might sound odd, but if you stop and think about it you will realize you run a lot of water down the drain while you wait for hot water to reach the fixture. A typical family of four wastes up to 15,000 gallons of water per year running water down the drain while waiting for hot. You could collect the water in containers and use it for something else like watering plants or flushing the toilet. Oh boy, doesn't that sound like fun!

There are however low cost, easy to install systems that you can purchase for your home which will eliminate running all that water down the drain. Several types of systems are available, and they all save you water, but they all have pros and cons. We shall examine several of these systems and you can decide if such a system, and specifically which type of system would best suit your needs.

There is really only one basic way to get hot water to a distant fixture without running water down the drain, circulate the water in a loop back to the water heater inlet. The way in which the water is circulated and how it is controlled varies with the different types and brands of hot water delivery systems.

The first system we shall examine is the circulating system that uses a dedicated return line to get water from the fixtures back to the water heater inlet. The hot water piping should be looped from fixture to fixture, and at the last fixture a pipe is run back to the inlet of the water heater. A pump is included in the line either at the water heater outlet or between the return line and the water heater inlet.

The circulating pump is very low power and pumps only a very low flow, but it doesn't take much flow to keep the entire hot water piping system full of hot water. This type of system provides the fastest hot water of any system when plumbed properly. Truly instant hot water when you turn on the tap. A big drawback however, is the amount of energy that this system uses. To keep the piping full of heated water requires a lot more energy and makes your water heater work a lot harder. The cost of the energy to heat water is much greater than the cost of the water itself. In some states including California it is not legal to install such systems anymore due to the energy conservation regulations for new home construction. Installing such a system would probably be very expensive since it would most likely involve serious plumbing to add that return line. One more problem with circulating systems is that they can not be used with tankless water heaters. Since tankless heaters take longer to get you the hot water, they waste more water than traditional heaters. They are not however compatible with circulating systems.

Other systems use the cold water line as the return. All water heaters have a cold water inlet, and thus the cold water supply at each fixture connects back to the water heater inlet. By placing a pump at the fixture the cooled off hot water left in the piping after the last use can be pumped into the cold water line, until the hot water reaches the fixture. There are basically two types of systems that utilize the cold water line as the return. One type of system controls the pump that's located at the fixture by temperature. When the water at the pump (fixture) reaches a pre-set temperature the pump shuts off. Typically it's about 80 or 90 degrees.

There are several problems with this type of system. One problem is that you don't have instant hot water, you have instant warm water. So if you want hot water you still have to run water down the drain, although you will get hot water more quickly than with a normal plumbing system. Another problem is that your cold water line is now going to be full of warm water, and some people like cold water from the cold water tap, not warm water. In that case you would have to run water down the drain to get cold water. Laing makes such a system; the autocirc system, which retails for around $230.00 RedyTemp makes one with a manufacturer's suggested retail price of over $500, but I've seen it for sale on the RedyTemp site for $325.

A better system, in my humble opinion, is a demand system. A demand system is similar to the laing and RedyTemp systems in that the pump is placed at the fixture furthest from the water heater, and connects to the hot and cold water lines. The difference is in the control method. With a demand system the user must demand hot water by pressing a button. Pressing the button starts the pump which pumps the water from the heater to the fixture at high speed, so that one gets his water faster than normal. When the pump senses a sudden increase in water temperature is shuts off, preventing the cold water line from filling with warm water. Once the pump shuts off you have nearly instant hot water at the tap.

Demand systems have more powerful pumps so that you get your water faster. Since demand pumps only run for a few seconds, they use very little power, typically about $1 - $2 dollars per year in electricity. Some demand hot water systems will work with tankless water heaters; it depends on whether the pump is powerful enough to turn on the heater. Hot water demand systems are manufactured by Metlund and Chilipepper Sales. Metlund has several models, and vary in price from about $350 to over $800. If you have a tankless heater you should make sure the pump you've chosen will operate the flow switch. The smaller models will not. Chilipepper Sales manufactures only one model, the Chilipepper Model CP6000. The CP6000 has the most powerful pump on the market and will run any tankless water heater made. The CP6000 sells for about $180.

Demand hot water systems are the only ones that provide faster hot water without running water down the drain, and are energy efficient. Demand systems are truly green products and friendly to the environment. Feel good when you use your hot water, install a demand system in your home.

Touchfree Trash Cans - The Wonders of Automatic Waste Receptacles

Most people look for the most inconspicuous and easy to use trash cans they can find. Many would be surprised to find out that they can actually buy touchfree trash cans that can open without lifting a finger. Automatic waste receptacles are the best solution to your trash problem for three main reasons.

First, discarding items into a touchfree trash can is more convenient than hassling with lids. Some lids come off too easily and fall to the floor when you least expect it. Other lids are difficult to open; if you want to deposit some trash in them, you will have to set it down just to open the lid before you can throw it away. Swinging lids are notorious for flipping trash back out onto the floor. Touchfree trash cans have lids that open and close by themselves, easily and smoothly.

Second, they cans promote a healthy environment. They keep germs in their place, away from people's hands. Once you drop a discarded item into a touchfree trash can, you will not have to worry about touching it again. There are even special touchfree trash cans for garbage or medical waste. Touchfree trash cans have infrared sensors that cause them to open upon approach. The rest of the time, they are safely and hygienically closed.

Third, automatic waste receptacles come in a variety of styles and sizes to suit every want and need. Touchfree trash cans come in sizes from a petite 5 gallon to a roomy 21 gallon. Some of these cans are plastic, but others are made of shiny stainless steel. The prices are affordable and vary according to the size and construction of the touch free trash cans.

For these three reasons, touchfree trash cans are a great addition to an office or family home. Shopping for these automatic waste receptacles is easy if you find a good supplier of the products. It only takes a little thought to decide what you need and put in your order.

Understanding Types Sinks For Your Kitchen

Types of Kitchen Sinks

When designing your home, you want everything - including the kitchen sink! The kitchen sink is the central hub of the kitchen, and consumers have a wide variety of stylish faucets with multiple spray options and a host of accessories to choose from as well. It is easy to get overwhelmed since there are so many types and styles to choose from. How do you decide? When picking a kitchen sink, you have to ask yourself a couple of questions.

How big is your cabinet? You should measure height, depth, and width.

How many bowls do you want? Depending on your needs, sinks can come with one, two or 3 bowls.

What type of sink works with your countertop? You have two major options in this category. Self-rimming kitchen sinks are the most popular and easiest to install and are generally used on Formica countertops. The sink rim sits on the countertop and weight is supported by the countertop. The faucet usually mounts directly to the deck along the back of the sink. Under mount kitchen sinks are generally used with solid surface countertops such as granite or marble, These sinks mount beneath the countertop creating a seamless look around the sink and makes counter cleanup a breeze.

Single Bowl Kitchen Sinks

A Single Bowl Kitchen Sink is great for those who prefer a dishwasher over hand washing. You might want to consider a deep bowl to assist in rinsing large pots and pans. If space is an issue in your kitchen, this is an ideal option.

Double Kitchen Sinks and Triple Kitchen Sinks

Double Bowl Kitchen Sinks and Triple Bowls Kitchen Sinks are ideal for washing dishes by hand, you can wash in one bowl and rinse in the other. Some multi-bowl sinks also come with one bowl smaller than the others, which is convenient for scraping food scraps directly into a garbage disposal or simply keeping them out of the way until cleanup.

Apron-front Kitchen Sinks

Apron-front Kitchen Sinks also known as farmhouse sinks evoke a period style kitchen and have a stylish panel in the front. They can be tiled in or come in under mount models.

Bar/Prep/Entertainment Sinks

Bar/Prep/Entertainment sinks are small sinks originally designed to scrub and prep fruits and vegetables, but their purpose has extended itself to many more applications. These sinks vary greatly in size and shape. This sink can fit virtually any application from an island in the kitchen, a bar sink in the bedroom or an entertainment sink in the family room.

You can easily find a kitchen sink that fits with the style of your kitchen and also satisfies your cooking, cleaning and lifestyle needs Kitchen sinks come in a variety of finishes. While stainless steel continues to be the most popular choice, you should pick the finish that is right for you and the look of your kitchen. Bakers Racks - They Nicely Expand Your Kitchen

If you are suffering from a lack of space in your kitchen and you want a quick and elegant fix, then bakers racks may be the answer. Handier than having to put up shelves, less space-hungry than the typical kitchen dresser and often more pleasant to look at, bakers racks are available in both linear (flush with a side wall) and corner styles, to make sure that you maximize all your resources.

Bakers racks started life, as their name suggests, a simple, freestanding rack with shelves and hooks for storing different kitchen utensils and other culinary items. They are typically open in their design so that you can see at a glance what you have and pick the right utensil from where it's hanging on its hook. Some versions have a closed cabinet space for the lower half of the rack, but the upper half, extending to a height of five or six feet, is almost invariably open.

If this space-optimizing solution seems like the right one for you, then take some measurements to find out how much linear wall space you have available or what your corner space can be. Take note of the style of your kitchen: a modern style will suggest a more contemporary bakers rack or perhaps even a professional version in stainless steel. When you've reviewed the situation and perhaps also thought a little about what you want the rack to do (shelves, hook space, cupboard space if appropriate), then check out the different offerings to select a quality product that is within your budget.

On looking at the different versions available, you may come across some more sophisticated variations such as the ones with spice drawers and wine racks. Others may let you vary the height in between the different shelves so that you can store the different sizes objects that you have in your kitchen. You may find that there is a compromise that will have to be made concerning functionality on the one hand and style on the other. After all, bakers racks that blend harmoniously into your country kitchen theme are also important.

Designs can indeed be varied. Metal such as wrought iron is a popular choice, and the type of decoration as well as the color can further distinguish this. Black, green, gold and bronze all figure in the different color schemes possible. But the choice doesn't stop there. You can also find bakers racks made out of wood, and of course you can always go further yourself to add your own personal touch in painting or decorating the original model.

Many bakers racks are supplied in kit form, so if you have prior experience in assembling kitchen cabinets or other furniture, this will be useful too. Make sure that you have the right tools and stick to the instructions. If there is s specific order indicated for putting the different parts together, this is usually for a good reason. If in doubt when purchasing, go for a known and reputable brand, even if it costs a few dollars more.

Portable Kitchen Islands Make Entertaining Easy

People always say my husband and I throw the best barbecues and cocktail parties. They always ask what our secret is, and I never knew what to tell them. Finally, one day I decided to think about it, I mean what is it that makes it so much fun and easy? Then it occurred to me, there are a few secret weapons I use during all of our get-togethers, which not only make it easy for guests to enjoy themselves, but it makes it simple for me to clean up, and host the party too. Here are my secret weapons to throw a great party.

1. Have a go-to menu for all occasions. I use this menu for all of our barbecues, and sometimes I'll add to it, or tweak it just a bit, but for the most part I know what I'm getting every time I prepare for a party. For the most part it consists of some great appetizers, like chips and dip. The dip can vary for occasions, but typically it's a cheese and salsa dip that guests rave about. It's also about a vegetable platter with a sour-cream based dip. Then, onto the main course, you have to have your standard hot dogs and burgers. However, it's important to include, either some great chicken or steak tips, marinated of course, or some vegetable kabobs.

2. Offer the best seats on the house. It's very important to me that my guests (and my family and I) are as comfortable as possible. I take pride in finding the most comfortable chairs available, whether it's barstools, patio chairs, or a couch. I like my guests to sit down and relax, never to sit down and be uncomfortable or fidgety. Having a comfortable sitting area can make a huge difference both in the way you feel at your party and the way guests feel at your party. So make sure to keep comfort in mind when decorating your home.

3. It's all about convenience. I love portable kitchen islands, because they are so incredibly practical! I can use them in the kitchen when I need extra counter space to prepare the food, or I can wheel it out to the patio if I need additional serving space. No mess, no huge piece of furniture to lug around, only convenience! It's like my little helper, that I can wheel around to help me serve, and after the party, it helps me clean up. It makes my life a lot easier, overall.

While hosting a party is often thought of as being stressful and a lot of work, it doesn't have to be. These are just a few tips to throw a great party, without wearing yourself out...So, start enjoying your home with your friends and family, and get cooking!

Concrete Countertops - Are You Serious

I recently learned of this growing trend towards concrete as an indoor building material. I have to admit to call we skeptical would be putting it lightly. I just could not imagine why anyone would want the skyscraper look for inside their home. I mean to each their own, but I just could not get a mental picture. I recently learned that I was completely wrong.

Designing with concrete today is nothing like one would imagine. What first shocked me was the versatility of concrete. I have a friend who is a mason. He started explaining to me about all the wonderful things you could create our of concrete. I kept blowing him off until he showed me his latest job. He had just installed custom concrete counter tops for a client.

The look on my face must have betrayed my feelings because he insisted that I go and take a look at them. I was quite skeptical still own the ride over. Once we entered the kitchen, I was floored. Not even something like granite could look the way these counter tops did. The concrete had a warmness I definitely was not expecting. It was the warmest kitchen I may have ever been in. The craftsmanship of these counters really stood out. Unlike any other building material concrete has amazing customization. Being that I live at the beach and a favorite Outer Banks pasttime is collecting seaglass on the beach, he suggested that I have him install custom concrete counter tops with a vein of polished seaglass. It sounds like a good idea to me.

My friends at Signature Concrete Creations are always interested in exciting new projects. If you think you may be interested in something unique contact them Or you can visit here for custom concrete counter tops. If you love the beach you can find me writing more on the Outer Banks Beach Blog.

Retro Revival

"I loved the fact that my era is coming back," Smiles 69 year old Joyce Malyne, a retired fashion buyer, as she fumbles through stacks of old Motown vinyl. "It is remarkable how in vogue the forties, fifties and sixties' shapes and designs are at the moment. Funny how these things come round again..."

We live in a modern mirror of the past and as a result much of the most popular designs of clothes, interior, car and house accessories also reflect what was fashionable fifty years ago. From the drainpipe jeans seen on Sienna Miller and Kate Moss to the shapes of the bowls Gordon Ramsey is eating out of, everything seems to copy an aspect from past legendary styles.

Johnny Shotton, Manager at To Be Worn Again, Brighton's largest second hand clothes warehouse, agrees that there is nothing more fashionable than clothes from the sixties right now. He says: "We have so many people after clothes from that era. It's unbelievable but great for us! There is a mod night twice a month now, playing music from the fifties and sixties - and authentic Rock n' Roll bands seem to be popping up left, right and centre."
So why is it that we have turn on progression and gone for revival instead this season?

Richard Jayston, a 27 year old music journalist for Rockfeedback.com, comments: "Things that are that good are never going to disappear. Early music from forties blues to the sixties soul, was just so good. It has influenced everything subsequently anyway so it is only natural that kids start turning back to the roots of this influence. It is like the clothes - people want to wear what their parents wore for one reason - because people want what's good!"

Joyce warns the over confidant stylish generation below her, however, admitting that: "at the time you know you look good but you think that taking it further and into your home is a good idea too. When I look back at pictures of our house in the sixties I have to admit I am embarrassed! Some of the more buoyant d?r was awful. Orange shag pile carpets with big bold designs and things like that. You have to be careful."

In an attempt to satisfy the younger generation's lust for retro design without suffering the regret of so many former children of the some what over the top sixties, here are five tips to help you keep retro, classic.

? It's the little things that make the difference
Instead of starting with a change of wall colour or a new retro car, try a smaller more affordable change to begin with. Little changes in the home or wardrobe will ensure that the style is something you really like before you commit to that full-on mod haircut, or new wallpaper!

? BE practical
Remember, there is no point having a stylish bag with a hole in it! If those thick shag-pile carpets do take your fancy - will they suit your lifestyle? If you have pets, are they the type that moults? If this is the case, do you really like hoovering that much? It's the same with a haircut or a new wardrobe - If your lifestyle needs a quick wash and go hairstyle, then don't have something cut that won't be liveable. A car that looks fantastic has to be a car that drives well and is economical if you drive to work!

? Commit to a colour scheme - and don't be too brash
New d?r must match the rest of the house to an extent. A room that draws influence from one era slightly more than another is great - but don't go totally sixties in one room with huge big designs and then minimalist in the next. Choose a style and maintain a subtle level of consistency throughout.

? Match bold with plain
A bright colour should be matched with a plain background or visa versa. Go for bright coloured bold wallpaper with staple plain accessories or the other way round. This goes for dressing up too - If your accessories scream retro, combine them with a simple outfit. Accessories are the perfect way to set a style off, be it retro Dulton dustpan and brush (see Cubehomew ares website in the link below) in the kitchen or a funky curvy bracelet and necklace (various bracelet designs available at To Be Worn Again, Providence Place in Brighton)

? Start with the kitchen!
Lee Dobbins, for Interior decorating 456 explains: "Your kitchen is the room for family, friends, food and fun so you want to be sure it has a great design with big impact." According to Gopal Ahluwalia, vice president for research of the National Association of Home Builders, the kitchen has become the focal point of the home, therefore subtle accessories like scales and bins can highlight a change of style in an environment where you have a chance to get used to it.

Johnny continues: "Only the other day I had dinner at this restaurant and even the cutlery was curvy and decorated in big chunky patterns reminiscent of the sixties. I'm all for it me, I love the fashions from back then."

Interior design has also taken a turn towards the past, with bold designs and ice-cream pastels at the forefront this month in Wallpaper, the fashionable interior design magazine. Sydney-based SPACE has recently opened their light-filled flagship gallery in the heart of Bangsar - this gallery is adorned with salacious browns, mod stripes and rounded arm chairs - a clear product of the designers various forties and fifties influences.

If you want to go retro, make sure you take steps to ensure your new chosen style fits with your life. There are loads of great retail outlets that sell retro accessories but start small! As Chayse Dacoda, the famous designer and presenter of HGTV's Get in together once said: "Every person and space has a different energy and desire, try to incorporate that into a comfortable, inviting, fluid space that not only serves your purpose, but also is also beautiful."

Jo-rosie is a proffessional journalist writing on behalf Cubehomewares, an online kitchenware shop stocking a wide range of contemporary homewares, kitchen accessories and designer kitchenware. We stock some really great retro homeware and kitchenware from Dulton.

Ikea Kitchen Cabinets - Backbone of Your Ikea Kitchen

Cabinets are the backbone of Ikea Kitchens. Before going for an Ikea kitchen installation, make sure you are aware of the different types and styles of cabinet solutions available and how you can use them for maximizing your kitchen space.

Ikea Kitchen Cabinets

A typical Ikea kitchen consists of lower cabinets, upper cabinets and the worktop. You can go for a custom-made solution depending on your needs, your kitchen layout and the appliances you need to fit in. The sink and other appliances can be accommodated to get a tailor-made solution that works best for you.

The most common cabinets are 15'', 18'', 21'', 24'', 30'' or 36" wide; 24'' deep for a lower cabinet and 12'' deep for an upper cabinet. There are other sizes available as well and you can choose them as per your needs. Most cabinets are available in single-door or double-door styles. The key is to plan out what combination of cabinets works the best for you.

Other options worth mentioning are self-closing full-extension drawers that glide smoothly and silently, pull-out baskets, carousel solutions for corner units, short and tall pull-out pantries, vacuum holders, recycling solutions, hide-away chopping boards, utensil organizers and many more. Also open shelving, hanging rails and shallow depth mini-cabinets are getting increasingly popular these days.

You can mix and match Ikea cabinets, designs, styles, doors to get infinite options with lots of inserts and extra shelves.

Ikea cabinets are installed on steel strips fitted on the walls. The cabinets are supported on plinths, legs, or a combination of both. One important thing worth noting is an Ikea kitchen cabinet goes right up to the wall, so if you have any pipes running there, you need to plan some modifications.

Plinths and legs are available with different heights to suit your needs. Moreover, each leg can be adjusted to level out any irregularities in the underlying surface.

A proper Ikea kitchen cabinet choice can make your kitchen look special so make sure you put some efforts to review and research Ikea kitchen installations.

A Stylish Kitchen For Every Home

It is considered one of the most important rooms in a home. Used for food preparation, eating and sometimes entertaining, the kitchen is pretty much the heart of any residence. It is typically equipped with a stove, fridge, microwave oven, a toaster and possibly a dishwasher. Some architectural designs even allow space for a washer and dryer, but that is rather atypical.

A kitchen is often the center of family activities. It is the place where junior does his homework, dad checks his email early in the morning and mum visits with her girlfriends in the afternoon. One time or another during the day, everyone ends up in the kitchen and that is a good incentive to make this busy hub as inviting and attractive as possible.

The features of a kitchen depend on budget, size and lifestyle. The architectural structure of some buildings only allow for miniature cooking areas - apartments come to mind - while others have lots of room, yet are organized in a rather simplistic way. No need to have the ultimate kitchen with an island, an over-the-range microwave, a dishwasher, multiple stainless steel appliances, fancy pendant lights, granite countertops or antique copper patina sinks with designer bronze faucets, when the cook is never home.

It is not always out of choice that a kitchen ends up being underprivileged. The style of an older house can be rather room confining, or there is always the possibility that, with baby number three on the way, the residing family grew just a little too fast. These are just a couple of the reasons why limited space can make a kitchen undesirable or cramped. In that case a home decorator or a more specific designer expert can help with advice. For example: exchanging a hutch for a rolling island will create a lot more work surface and an island with a drop leaf and casters can bring mobile convenience. Tucked against a wall it won't even interrupt the room's traffic. And don't forget floating shelves if you need extra storage!

Whether you are re-organizing your kitchen with what you already have or going all out, keep in mind that any modification you make will have a big impact. Use your imagination when it comes to changes, regardless if they pertain to structure, new flooring or updating your cabinets. Just keep one thing in mind: whatever you do, stay in budget. You do not want to end up dissatisfied with your efforts just because of he cost!

Paying attention to details will determine the warmth of your cooking area. Adding bright and warm colors to a bland kitchen will bring zest while snappy high-energy patterns will add character. With a few imaginative accents you can emphasize the features of counter tops, walls and alluring furniture and make any kitchen inspirational unique and magazine-cover attractive!

Create Safe and Stylish Kitchens With Home Water Filters and Eco-Friendly Products

No matter how big a home is, everyone always seems to hang around the kitchen. The kitchen is the central hub of a house. It?s where the food is made, stored and usually where the host/hostess is holed up. But even with such a visible and important area of the home, many people go with style over substance when designing a kitchen. They forget to install home water filters, choose eco-friendly counter surfaces, and provide effective garbage disposal.

How do water filters work into your style factor? In today?s eclectic design landscape, many water purification companies are making filters that are easy to conceal. Some systems fit conveniently under your kitchen work-station. Also, a good filtration device will attach easily to your current faucet. Most are easy to connect, but do keep in mind that some filtration systems need to be installed by a licensed plumber.

While the kitchen can sometimes be a gathering place for your guests, its sink is the centerpiece of activity. During the setup of your kitchen, the style of kitchen sink you choose influences the entire design of the room. Whether you go for a stainless steel industrial look or a ceramic Tuscan-inspired design, the sink will set the tone the whole room.

Aesthetics aside, it is also important to decide on a material for your new sink. To determine which type of sink is best for the safety of your family and the harmony of your home, you must know the pros and cons of each. For instance, while stainless steel is a popular choice for a modern-looking kitchen, it can be easily dented and quite noisy.

The approach to design will be easier if you think about all the features you want your kitchen to have. When you order your sink and counters, think about what kind of space you really need for your daily activities. Many home water filters can accommodate contemporary kitchen configurations and styles. In addition, decide if you will have a dishwasher or will be washing your dishes by hand. Many sinks come with two-basin configurations, making soaking and washing dishes easier.

So how do water filters work alongside dishwashers? With all the concern about the many contaminants in water, a whole house filter is becoming more widely used. This way, you can have pure water when washing clothes as well as dishes. When you think about it, home water filters that control your entire water source can help you take cleaner showers and even offer more reassurance when you are watering your vegetable garden.

Other environmentally-friendly kitchens include bamboo, recycled stone and wood. According to design experts, the latest in eco-friendly kitchens includes easy-to-grow bamboo and copper sinks. Bamboo can even be used for cutting boards, backsplashes and flooring pieces. While sink manufacturers are crafting copper kitchen products with no lead in the alloy.

So, hop on the green-living trend and embrace home water filters, recycle bins, and refurbished stone countertops in your kitchen. When you do, you can create a healthy as well as stylish kitchen that?s easy on Mother Nature, too.

Pros and Cons of Ready to Assemble Kitchen Cabinets

What are Ready To Assemble Kitchen Cabinets?

Ready to assemble kitchen cabinets or RTA are popular and in vogue due to their feasibility options, ease and quality. In recent times the consumer's attention has shifted from conventional buying and purchasing for home based d?r and furnishings. Earlier kitchen cabinets were installed after taking up design and then purchasing everything for construction and waiting for the carpenter to get it done. Nowadays it's just a figment of creativeness that companies are selling ready to assemble kitchen cabinets with high quality standards which take less time to install.

How are They Different From Other Types Of Kitchen Cabinets?

Ready to assemble kitchen cabinets differ widely from custom-made cabinets as a buyer can easily shop for RTA at any retail outlets and can even order them from online shopping stores, though it will take time for a product to be shipped to you. Whereas in custom made cabinets the work is enormous for both the home-owner and a cabinet-maker from measurement, pattern selection to custom-making the cabinets then polishing and installing it. It requires a great deal of patience, time and money for last minute changes in the pre-selected designs.

What Are The Pros Of Ready To Assemble Kitchen Cabinets?

The main advantage of ready to assemble kitchen cabinets is the convenience in terms of purchasing and installation. A person interested in having ready to assemble kitchen cabinets installed at home can find them available at large stores and online shopping stores for home furnishings and d?r.

So, there are ample options available for people who wish to choose RTA cabinets for home d?r and even for kitchen remodeling to suit their budgets. A buyer can choose from many on-stock options for the kitchen cabinets from spacious cabinets to tailor-made cabinets to serve specific purpose like, semi-stock cabinets, which has a utilitarian approach for a buyer and it can accommodate various racks for storage, display, shelves and drawers.

RTA comes in various prescribed sizes and range based on specific standard sizes. A buyer has numerous options to select from when it comes to designs, patterns and finishing's to suit the budget and personal taste. They are cost-effective to some extent since, unlike custom based cabinets; the cost of assembling the components of kitchen is perfected earlier so it saves time and money both. With few hours of installation, the RTA would be ready to be used by you. Sometimes do-it-yourself manuals prove helpful in assembling and installing the RTA by yourself.

What Are The Cons Of Ready To Assemble Kitchen Cabinets?

The RTA kitchen cabinets come in standard sizes, which is an advantage and disadvantage both since it does not give a buyer the custom-made fitting and storage as per as space management of kitchen area. The prices may differ from retail outlets to major furnishing shops and availability of the stock is also sometimes a major concern for the retailers. The installation may be easy and can be done in few steps but if not done expertly then there is a great chance for the components to fall apart.

Wicker Basket Drawers Make Light Work of Kitchen Storage

When it comes to kitchen storage, most of us are familiar with the problem of the kitchen cupboard where the groceries languish at the back because they are just out of easy reach - and that's where the pull-out drawer offers a great - and attractive - solution.

There are two formats currently popular in the market - sleek and shiny chrome wire drawers for the modern kitchen and the more country style wicker basket drawers for the traditional and cottage style kitchen.

Easy to fit, both types of drawer fix to either side of the kitchen cupboard on runners making it easy to pull-out the drawer to access and stow away your products. Not only is it more efficient, but also makes life a lot easier if you have back problems, are infirm or simply have a tough time bending down to get to your groceries.

The basket drawers come in a variety of styles, for groceries and bread baskets and are manufactured in standard sizes to fit the vast majority of kitchen cabinets. Depths vary to accommodate different needs. What's more, you should be able to fit them quickly and easily yourself. Often there is no need even to remove the existing shelf as the baskets will fit into the cavity above and below it. So simply screw fix the runners to the side of the cabinet and slide in the basket.

The chrome variety come in an even greater number of options, as single drawers and in sets, even a fantastically practical lockable unit that prevents child access to potentially harmful cleaning products. For slick, easy-access storage, get into drawers!

Home Improvement is Easier With a Contractor

Many people are so focused on saving money that hiring a contractor to do kitchen remodeling job is something they would never consider. However, when you think about it, hiring a contractor may just be the smartest move you can make. Let's look at the facts and see why hiring a contractor can be such a good idea.

Without a contractor you have to be sure that you understand how to handle all of the necessary tasks in the remodeling process. You need to know how to do electrical work, plumbing work, sanding, painting, flooring and installation of cabinets, countertops and whatever else you want done. If done improperly the cost of repairing mistakes may just make doing it yourself more costly than hiring a contractor. Now when you hire a contractor you will know the work will be done correctly. You will not have to worry about mistakes and you will be able trust that when the project is complete everything will be useable and functional. Having the peace of mind may just be the best pay off. The only time it may not make sense to go with a contractor over doing it yourself is if you have experience with remodeling and know you can do the job as well as a contractor. However, if you have no clue what you are doing then you should leave it up to the professionals. This will help to ensure that the job does not end in disaster.

Besides saving you money, hiring a contractor could also save you time. If you do it yourself and have to then go back and correct mistakes, it will take more time then just having it done correctly the first time. Additionally, your contractor will often have crew that will be able to get multiple things done at one time. You may have people to help you, but this still will not be as efficient as having a contractor with a crew doing the job.

Hiring a contractor to do your kitchen cabinets remodeling project can be the perfect choice if you are on a budget and concerned about time. Additionally, it will help to ensure that the work is done right and the kitchen ends up just the way you want it. All you will need to do is design a plan and communicate your plan to your contractor. He will take care of making sure it gets done the way you want.

Ray Walberg's web pages can be discovered on different online publications linked to unfinished kitchen cabinet doors and finishing kitchens. Kitchen Tables and Chair Sets - Purchasing Them is Easy

When you are designing your own kitchen most people think about organizing the appliances in their kitchen so that they can get the most out of the space, however this isn't the only thing you need to think about. You also need to consider the seating and eating areas of what is a very important room in your house.

Many people design their kitchen using a French Country theme. To make your life easier there are plenty of kitchen tables and chair sets available. It's worth shopping around to make sure you find the best value and right set for your kitchen.

If you design the kitchen well, then you will have everyone believing that they have just walked into a real French country kitchen! These kitchens are great fun and enable you to show off your unique personality. In order to produce this romantic and cozy feel you should consider a few important touches, which will improve the chances of you being able to pull it off. If you look around hard enough you will be able to find kitchen tables and chair sets which fit well with the d?r theme.

First you should consider the color of your kitchen, as this is very important. Whenever you walk into a French country kitchen the first thing you will notice is that the walls are normally painted in a butter or slightly yellow color. The cupboards are normally pale blue or salmon pink, this works really well to set off the color of the walls. However if you think these are too strong colors then you might like to consider using subtler accent colors. Some kitchen tables and chair sets can also be found to suit the needs of this space. You shouldn't have a problem finding beautiful light colored wooden tables with flowery accented cushions.

Natural light is a very important design consideration for anyone in a French country kitchen, many of these kitchens use nothing more than simple roman blinds. The fabric is lightweight and will allow light in even when drawn. You could also use more complicated fabrics, perhaps with herb or vegetable designs on. If you are sticking with a specific group of vegetables, you may be able to even find a kitchen tables and chairs set that goes with the theme.

Also make sure that you use some dried lavender in your kitchen, as no authentic French country kitchen would be without some dried lavender!

Often less is better when it comes to recreating a French Country Kitchen. Plain pine tables work very well, and can be used for family and friends to meet, and also for the kids to play at. As you complete your kitchen design, make sure that the table is not put in the way of the main traffic routes in the kitchen and that they are well fit into the space you have available. While it's nice to have a beautiful table, it's not so nice to have one that is always in your way.

Author Jennifer Akre is an owner of a wide variety of online specialty shops including http://www.shopdiningtables.com that offer both items and information on how you can easily furnish and decorate your space. Whether it's your living, bedroom, or even your deck or patio, there are many tips you can use to make those spots both functional and beautiful. Today, she offers advice on how to create a fabulous indoor area by using classic kitchen furniture for a cozy look.

Why Choose Granite Kitchen Countertops?

As more and more people become conscious of the aesthetic factor of every corner of their homes, kitchens are growing into centerpieces of attraction. One of the first decisions that you need to take when you design your kitchen is regarding your countertops. Should you choose granite, marble or synthetic?

These days, there is a growing trend towards choosing granite kitchen countertops. There are many reasons for this.

Looks: Granite looks strikingly beautiful. You can get it in a variety of arresting colors, ranging from neutrals to something bright. Thus, it is easy to match granite kitchen countertops to the rest of your d?r. You can match any cabinet hardware to the natural grandeur of granite, and your kitchen will catch the gleaming, polished stateliness of granite. Additionally, the polish and gleam of granite lasts for a very long time. The natural designs etched on tiles made of granite are quite alluring and can form a good backdrop to the overall design of your kitchen. The only thing you have to ensure is that you buy tiles that match in color and design.

Rich textures: Granite, when removed from the earth comes as large blocks, which are then converted into slabs. Because of this, granite slabs have lesser instances of pattern variation and discoloration. Also, there are fewer cuts or scratches which significantly reduce the chances of dirt or grit getting stuck in crevices. So, granite kitchen countertops offer a nicely uniform solid surface for kitchen countertops after they are cut and polished.

Durability: Granite is a rock quarried from the bowels of the earth. Thus, it is very hard and durable. It does not get chipped easily and is not damaged by heat, cold or other adverse conditions. Once sealed, granite is not vulnerable to discoloration or to damage caused by hot pots and metals. Granite needs little work and effort in terms of maintenance and retains its glossy good looks even after many years of use.

Return on investment: Granite may add to the overall cost of your design or remodeling. But, it is a good investment because it adds to the overall value of your home. If you need to sell your home at a later point of time, you can rest assured that homebuyers will pay more for a kitchen that does not need any repair.

You may use granite slabs, tiles or kits for building your kitchen countertops. Slabs are more cumbersome and somewhat prone to damage during transportation and are also vulnerable to minimal risks of mismatching. Therefore, many people opt for granite tiles, which are easy to handle and uniform in looks. For greater ease, you even get granite kits, which contain slabs for a prescribed area in matching colors and texture.

Granite kitchen countertops are easy to maintain and do not need any extra effort since they are natural, raw stone. Minimal care will help you preserve the look and finish of your countertop for years and years.

First Choice Stone, specializing in granite kitchen countertops, and cabinets for kitchens and bathrooms is dedicated to providing old world quality and craftsmanship with innovative technology.

Using Lighting in Kitchen Remodeling

Remodeling the kitchen is a pretty big task. You should tackle one thing at a time in order to make the transition smooth and to cut down on the stress and strain of the remodeling process. When you begin to remodel the counter tops you will need to take a lot of things into consideration to get the job done right. Depending on the current condition of the existing countertops you may need to put in all new countertops or just refinish the existing ones. When it comes to laminated counter tops, dealing with glue can be a hassle, but it is easier if you how to deal with it.

The Easiest Solution

The easiest way to remodel kitchen countertops is to completely install new ones. However, if your existing counter tops are in good shape then it could be more budget friendly to use them and just update them. How do you decide? Just use your own judgment, look at costs and examine what you already have. If the basic structure and condition of them are fine then use them. However, if you have a laminate top you might decide the time involved is too much and decide to replace. Take your budget and time into consideration, too.

Removing old laminate tops involves using special solvent to loosen the glue. You have to be especially careful not to gouge the wood during the removal process. After you have the tops off you will need to smooth out the surface. If you just need to refinish wooden tops then go ahead and remove the old finish and apply the new finish.

If you decide that replacing is the best option then you start by removing the old countertop. You will need to loosen it and pull it off. You will also need to clean the area and sand it down to ensure it is level.

Options

The type of surface you use to replace your countertops is purely your choice and will be based upon your budget and taste in matching your kitchen cupboards designs. The home improvement stores offer many options. You can get pre-made counter tops that come cut and ready to install. This is going to be the least time consuming choice. If you want a richer look then go for granite or stone. Be aware, though, these are heavy, hard to work with and quite expensive. You will almost always want to order these pre-cut, so measuring for fit is very important and must be accurate.

Enhancing the Finished Job

To enhance your newly installed counter tops you should consider some track lighting. These specially placed and focused lights can really add a charm to your new counter tops. You can easily find a variety of styles that will work with your kitchen. While you are installing the counter tops, installing some lighting fixtures is a simple task that will not add much time to the job, but will add a lot to the final look.

Being very passionate about kitchen designs and corner kitchen cabinets, John Bakers was writing many news in the field. From his writings, the columnist expressed his skill on subjects associated to kitchen cupboards designs.

How to Choose the Appropriate Kitchen Faucet Filter and Drink Safer

Even though installing a kitchen faucet filter in your home can provide you with better water quality, no single technology will eliminate all types of contaminants. However, it?s important to understand that some treatment devices use more than one process to rid water of its contaminants.

Some say that a reverse osmosis filter is the best choice to get out a wide range of contaminants from water. The assortment of contaminants ranges from inorganic chemicals such as salt, metal and lead to asbestos, minerals and nitrates. But you should make sure the model you select has carbon pre-filters and post-filters, which captures organic chemicals such as radon, pesticides and THMs.

Yet, others find some key flaws in a reverse osmosis system. For example, a kitchen faucet with filter might not be able to remove chlorine from the drinking water. If any product you buy says it can remove chlorine make certain that proof of this claim is furnished.

In addition, typical reverse osmosis filters have been criticized for wasting a lot of water during the filtration process. This adds up to about 3 gallons of waste for every gallon of pure water the system produces. One way to safeguard against this is to choose a system made with an automatic valve that prevents excessive water waste.

An additional item on the market that will remove almost everything from water is a distiller. How they work is that they electrically heat water until it turns to steam. Then, the steam condenses and turns back into water in a separate chamber. What this does is leave behind a large percentage of the contaminants, dirt, grit and pollutants that affect water?s color.

On the other hand, an Activated Carbon (AC) kitchen faucet filter is a better choice if your water tastes, smells, or looks bad. An AC filter also removes chlorine, pesticides, herbicides, radon, trihalomethanes and various inorganic chemicals. Only, not all AC filters effectively reduce the lead content that is becoming more present in water. If you're concerned about lead, be sure the unit you're considering is certified for lead removal. A kitchen faucet with filter can help. Those made with a solid block and precoat absorption filter can take out lead effectively.

After you take the time to get a quality kitchen faucet filter, also store your water correctly. Sometimes you might keep a bottle of filtered water in your refrigerator or in a thermos when traveling or going to work. What many individuals do not realize is that when water is stored in plastic bottles, harmful byproducts can leach into it. But there is an answer to keep your filtered water pure: store it in glass containers. This is even more important when storing water long-term since it can become even more contaminated.

As you can imagine, simply hooking on a tap filter is not as easy and you might think. But if you know all of your options, you can work to keep your water and your body healthy on a daily basis.

William Lin is an avid proponent of optimum health through high quality water sources. Break free from the typical low quality water sources by visiting William's site at Pure Filtered Safe Water to learn about his research on health through cleaner, healthier water.

Ideas on Kitchen Cabinets For Your Log Home

If you are someone who has a log home and is now thinking of building various cabinets for the home then this is the page that you should be reading. You can think of getting yourself an office space and nothing could be better than a space built with logs as that would make a beautiful, natural and cozy environment. When the clients come in for meetings and appointments they would simply love this office space of yours as it will be inviting and very attractive to be in.

It is possible that you are thinking of giving classes in a cabinet made out of log. This is also a very good idea because a log cabinet provides a very peaceful and tranquil environment because of its connection with nature and that is why students would find it easier to concentrate here than any place else. No matter what the classes are it is going to be a successful one.

But it is very important when you are thinking about a kitchen cabinet in a log house because this is a key to its beauty. You can choose to have a kitchen that will include the dining space or maybe one such cabinet where there would be a separate dining space.

These types of log kitchens will help you bring in the nature from outdoors to your own home. There is an amazing kind of rustic beauty that is to be found in kitchens like this. The wood as well as the design that you choose for your log kitchen cabinet will define the taste of your home. Many modern elements can easily be incorporated in the look to give it a more polished touch which you might be looking for.

The design of the kitchen that has open beams and also introduces wood and stone wherever possible is a very good idea. An oak cabinetry along with a stone flooring adds the touch of beauty to the entire design. Slate counter-tops and groove walls would go great with this design as well as chandelier made up of wood elements or antlers - in case you have the dinning table within the kitchen space.

Adding a fireplace or a wood stove to the kitchen when you have space for it, is not a bad idea. You can use stainless steel appliances with black accents to bring in that modern touch. Recessed lighting above the task areas as well as under the cabinets would be great. For a clean flow hardwood flooring can be introduced.

These are some of the great ideas that you can think of when you are going to build cabinets for your log home. You should think about the spirit of the cabinet and the space in order to decide on the designs and elements of the build. Each of your cabinets should match well with the rest of the cabinets in your log home and everything should go along well with each other.

Granite Kitchen Islands and Countertops Are a Durable Choice For Home Improvement Projects

The materials that make up your kitchen counters, cabinets, and floors need to be ready for some abuse! The temperature in your kitchen fluctuates greatly between the dry heat from the oven to high humidity when you are steaming vegetables or boiling water. Pots are constantly banged around on the countertops, greasy fingers are opening and closing cabinets, and food spills on the floor all the time. It is important to make sure that you invest in materials that can withstand these conditions and still look brand new after several years.

If your next home improvement project is to make an addition to your kitchen, you should research granite kitchen islands. Granite is one of the most popular materials for islands and counters in kitchens across the country, not only because of its beautiful design but also because it is extremely durable. Once you see how great it is on your new kitchen island, you will want to install granite everywhere!

Granite is an igneous rock that is formed near the earth's core. It consists of feldspar and quartz that originates in magma and is cooled deep inside the earth. This material creates 60% of the planet's upper crust and is quarried all over the world. Its color varies greatly depending on where it is found; each piece of granite has its own unique colors, splotches, and veins. As a result, no two pieces of granite are the same. You will find that its shade ranges from a light color to a deeper, darker tone. Therefore, it is important to pick your granite based on actual slabs and not samples so that you pick the exact shade that you want.

This material is perfect for the kitchen because it requires little maintenance and is extremely durable. Granite is second only to diamonds in hardness, so it is incredibly durable. Naturally, it is not porous so it is highly stain resistant; when finished, it repels all liquids. All you need to do to clean it is wipe the surface down with soapy water and a soft cloth. It is also very tolerant of high temperatures; you can set down a hot frying pan on its surface and not worry about any burn marks.

Granite kitchen islands are not difficult to find. Not only do they look great, they also are easy to maintain and will last you for many years to come.

Italian Kitchen Decor

Italian kitchen decor brings to mind breathtaking images of the rolling hills of Tuscany with its beauty and splendor, along with pots of aromatic food simmering over the stove.

For some, their incredible love and passion of the Italian culture serves as an inspiration when decorating their kitchen in an Italian theme.

Since the kitchen is the heart of our home, and is where everyone gathers, it's important that it be a space that is inviting, warm, and cozy.

The beauty about Italian kitchen decor is that it incorporates natural materials, earth tones, and architectural accents that make it welcoming while giving it a dose of charm.

Your Italian kitchen decorating scheme can be achieved by combining rich colors, natural features, lighting, furniture, wall art, and accessories.

The result will be Italian kitchen decor that is enchanting and bursting with character.

Color: In Italian kitchen decor, the most commonly used colors are those that resemble the Italian countryside, such as earth tones, rich golds, blues, and green colors. Blue reminds us of the sky and sea while green is reminiscent of the rolling, grassy hills.

To give your kitchen warmth, you may use deep red, orange, and yellow colors. Also, since lavender fields are abundant in Italy, a hint of purple can be used in your kitchen to add to your colorful display.

Natural Features: Along with having a beautiful assortment of colors, it's important to include natural features in your kitchen.

An excellent Italian kitchen decor feature is ceiling beams.

To keep costs down, instead of opting for wood, you can install decorative faux beams that come in a rustic style for that weathered look.

The faux beams are lighter in weight and are available in different finishes. You can also choose to add decorative straps to the beams, which enhances their beauty.

Natural choices for countertops and flooring are stone, slate, granite, or terra cotta. This will definitely add to the magnificence of the kitchen and give it a more Italian feel.

Lighting: The ideal lighting choices for your Italian themed kitchen are those that give it an Old World feel, such as wrought iron fixtures.

You can find wrought iron fixtures that feature elegant scroll work, dark rusted iron, or a distressed look.

It creates a fabulous focal point in your kitchen that adds drama when illuminated.

Furniture: When selecting furniture pieces for Italian kitchen decor, consider choosing those that appear as if they've been in your family for generations. In doing so, it gives the kitchen character and the feeling of being lost in time.

A good choice is large, wooden furniture that is similar to a farmhouse style kitchen table, along with wooden chairs that feature rush woven seats. Also, benches are fabulous because it provides additional seating since several can sit on it, which makes for a more intimate gathering.

The use of a wooden block carving island, kitchen island, baker's rack, sideboard, chest of drawers, and cookbook shelf are additional furniture pieces to consider including in your Italian kitchen decor theme.

Wooden Block Carving Island/Kitchen Island: You can find wooden block carving islands that resemble a century old table with a thick top and hand turned legs.

Some also feature a center drawer perfect for cutlery and a storage shelf below.

It makes a stunning statement in your kitchen and further helps you achieve that Italian look.

Kitchen islands are a remarkable way to get additional prepping and storage space in the kitchen.

You can choose from different colors and designs that have granite, marble, stainless steel, or a wooden top. Not only are these islands functional, but they add a touch of elegance to your kitchen.

Some islands feature pull-o ut work surfaces, wine storage, shelves for cookbooks, a hidden spice rack, trash can and cookware storage areas, drawers, paper towel holders, hooks that function as utensil storage, and industrial strength casters for easy rolling.

Baker's Rack: A baker's rack offers storage solutions while giving you an attractive alternative to display your colorful dinnerware and glassware. Some are available in an open-air wall rack that is crafted from ornate iron with four shelves.

Other baker's racks offer three shelves, two pull-out drawers, a wine rack, and a lower cabinet perfect for storing utensils, plates, and treasured recipes. It is also great for stashing linens and items that need to be accessed quickly.

Sideboards: Sideboards lend beauty to any kitchen and also have generous storage capacity. They are a great place to safely keep glasses, delicate dishes, and utensils.

You can find them in classical, handcarved detailing on solid wood, with exotic wood inlays, or in distressed wood. Some come with a marble or wood top, two cabinet compartments consisting of rounded doors with an adjustable shelf, and several drawers.

Chest of Drawers: A chest of drawers makes a lovely piece in any Italian themed kitchen.

Some feature four lower drawers perfect for tableware storage, such as, extra kitchen items and linens, as well as a subdivided drawer for flatware.

It also has four top drawers that you can pull down flat, which gives you the convenience of easy reaching for small pantry items.

Cookbook Shelf: A cookbook shelf is a wonderful way to show off your favorite cookbook collection. However, its use is not limited to just storing cookbooks.

You can display a few of your favorite bottles of wine, decorative accessories, and other commonly used items, such as spices.

Wall Art/Accessories: Art is a very important feature to include in an Italian themed kitchen as well as in any room because it is an expression of who we are and depending on the art piece, it can evoke feelings of happiness, warmth, and appreciation for human creativity.

Canvas Art/Wall Art Plaque: You have many lovely pieces of art to choose from whether you opt for canvas or wall art plaques. These pieces include art that portrays stunning images of the Italian countryside, villa, and gardens.

Glass Subway Tiles For Your Kitchen

When you talk about renovating or remodeling one area of or the entire house, the term glass subway tile is often mentioned. This is because the popularity of glass tiles has increased throughout the years. It has become a favorite of interior designers in creating innovative design styles for the home. If you want to find out more about them, specifically how to use them to create a fresh look for your kitchen, then this is the article for you.

Many people wonder if glass subway tiles can really be used for decorating purposes, considering they're breakable and seemingly unsuitable to be played around with. The kitchen is one of the very few places in this world where you can be yourself. In it, you can cook up a storm, dish out secrets with friends, hang out with the family, or enjoy solitude while whipping out a meal or reading the paper. This means that, first and foremost, your bathroom should look like the way you want it to. Your bathroom should be an expression of who you really are; it should be a celebration of your tastes and preferences. If you want to put glass subway tiles in your kitchen, you can do so without fear of it not being possible. Many people use glass tiles in their kitchens - and you can, too.

You can find several websites that offer glass subway tiles. There are different designs for you to choose from, the most common of which are the stained glass and mosaic designs. You can opt for either design in a glass subway tile, as long as you consider not only your taste but also your kitchen's needs. The stained glass design embraces an appearance that possesses bright, colorful streaks and swirls. It is of an opalescent nature and can be customized with every use. On the other hand, the mosaic design is rich in texture and color. It is of a transparent, semi-opaque nature; it is smooth in the front and rightly textured in the back to provide you with a more secure grip, with miter beveled edges for that e3asy angling on corners.

There are so many things you can do with glass subway tiles for your kitchen. You can use them as lovely, unique accents or backsplash in the counter area, breakfast table area, or any kitchen nook. You can even extend the design out into the hall, perhaps even into the bathroom or outside in the pool area. The only thing that can limit the possibilities of using glass subway tiles is your imagination.

You can very well use glass subway tiles as an alternative to ceramic tiles when it comes to designing an area of your house, particularly the kitchen. The two kinds of tiles have almost similar installation processes, not to mention maintenance requirements. A glass subway tile may break if it is dropped prior installation, but once it is installed, it becomes durable, as well as impervious to water, acids, and many other chemicals out there At http://www.glasssubwaytiles.com and More info At http://www.ceramictile-murals.com

About Your New Kitchen Design

Does your heart yearn for the kitchen of your dreams when you look at all the kitchens that are showcased in various magazines and on various websites? Do you look at all of the aesthetically perfect layouts and compare them to your kitchen and realise that there is no comparison? Have you always wanted that dream kitchen, and if so, why have you never gone for that remodelling?

Perhaps it is a case of you being worried about what the costs are likely to add up to.

It is certainly not a lie that the costs that can be involved in having your kitchen remodelled can be really high. You should be aware though, that there are certain ways of having the kitchen you always wanted without having to pay the earth. Keep on reading if you require such knowledge.

There are techniques for improving your kitchen by looking at your existing floor plan. It may well be an option to adopt a gallery style, put in an island, or even removing an interior wall.

It goes without saying that physically creating more floor space can be achieved by building an extension. Building an extension is going to cost you a lot of money. You will have to pay for plumbing, plastering and an electrician to name but a few. You will also have to pay for all the roofing materials and the brickwork. It could be as drastic as having to alter the foundations of your house.

To come up with a solution that is more cost effective, you need to be looking around your kitchen for ways in which you may be able to create space from the inside. Look to see if there are parts of adjoining rooms that you could do without, as these could possibly be made into parts of your kitchen. The removal of a non-weight bearing wall is cost effective and can enhance the design of your house to quite an alarming extent. A lot of valuable space can be created in this way.

Gallery kitchens are designed in the pursuit of efficiency. The way in which such kitchens are so functional is such a wonder. The pity is that people seem really reluctant to have a galley kitchen because they feel that there is no real utilisation of space, because everything ends up being really crammed. If you want to avoid such a thing, then you can just reduce the size of your cooking area, in order for more space to be provided for the eating/seating area.

A flexible interior design element for a kitchen is the incorporation of an island. The interior design aspect of a room can be instantly improved. An island is something that is capable of creating a place for itself, without having to necessarily match the other cabinets.

Kitchen Remodeling Tips Reviewed

For most people, the kitchen is, without doubt, the most important room in the home. While most homeowners would first say that the living room or the bedroom is the key room of the home, when it comes time to really focus on how critical various rooms are, just about all would agree that the kitchen should be at the top of the list.

With this in mind, good kitchen plans are essential before any renovation begins. Of course, all of us want what is best for the family and the home. So, we use the best furniture we can afford and use decorating ideas that make the home a comfortable and inviting place. The key is to find an overall plan that fits both the needs and desires of family members.

Kitchen renovation ideas and complete plans are often reviewed in home decorating and design magazines. Some of these designs and floor plans are interesting and may seem quite attractive to the homeowner looking for ideas. But there are important questions to be asked at this point: Is this design/floor plan the correct one for our situation? Will it be attractive and comfortable, while making the kitchen an efficient place to cook and serve?

Following are some simple kitchen ideas that can help make a kitchen remodelling project successful. These ideas should be given serious consideration before making the first move toward kitchen renovation.

Tips For Great Kitchen

The first thing any family should do when thinking about remodelling a kitchen is sit down and talk about what the goal is for the project. Family members should be encouraged to voice their opinions and make suggestions for overall floor plan, colors, counter and cabinet arrangement etc.

Make a list of the areas in the kitchen that could be changed or upgraded. For example, start the list with flooring, then proceed to plumbing, electricity and lighting, appliances, cabinets, walls and so on. During this session, try to think about the new materials and technology that were not available when the home was built or when the kitchen was last remodelled.

After giving thought to the individual areas, it is time to again discuss an overall plan that will make the kitchen a comfortable place to prepare food and serve guests. During this discussion, it is important that the individual areas considered earlier be worked into the overall goal. Even without the assistance of an interior design professional, the family will be certain that the finished project will be appreciated by family and friends.

During this critical planning stage, the homeowner and family members should be open to outside ideas and suggestions. In fact, it might be wise to look at some of the decorating and kitchen magazines for details that may not occur to someone in the family. In addition, while looking at magazines and decorating catalogues, homeowners may discover materials or kitchen items that would be perfect for the renovation plan.

When it is time to take action and actually start removing the old to make way for the new, it might be best to stop for a moment. Consider, again, whether it would be good to have professional help from a home remodelling expert or a skilled carpenter.

Finding Ideas For Kitchen Remodeling Floor Plans

Do you feel like your kitchen is outdated? Does it need a more contemporary look? If so, it is time to give your kitchen a facelift and remodel your kitchen. There are many ideas to consider when planning to remodel your kitchen. You can upgrade your refrigerator or cabinetry, or opt for a kitchen remodeling floor plan to give your kitchen an entirely new, fresh look where it will immediately attract everyone to hang out and socialize.

Begin with a remodeling plan that will meet your needs in both style and functional purposes. Remember, you will still be cooking in your kitchen. It is not all about how it looks. If you do not think you can handle the messy and oftentimes confusing aspects of remodeling, you may want to hire a contractor and professional interior designers to help you determine what you want your new kitchen to look like in the end. If anything, an interior designer can offer you some great ideas for finding the perfect design to meet all of your needs, both in style and function.

If you are interested in hiring professionals, check out the website www.kitchenbathdesign.com which is a great resource for those in need of help with kitchen remodeling floor plans, among other renovation projects. The website also features some of the latest trends in home improvements, design and decorating where you can get a look at some of the newest kitchen appliances and designs out today, many of which may be suitable for your kitchen.

Another great website to consider is www.kitchen.com which offers kitchen remodelling plans and also links to other sites specializing in other areas of the kitchen, such as cabinetry for instance. This website is a great source of unique ideas where you can also schedule a consultation.

If you think you can handle a do-it-yourself (DIY) project, then go ahead and avoid hiring professionals. Do not be afraid to try what may seem like an intimidating project. Your local home improvement store can be a great source of assistance. Home Depot and Lowe's are two of the larger and more popular home improvement stores today. Opinions Matter When Remodeling the Kitchen

When it comes to remodeling some of the more detailed rooms like the kitchen, you will find that this is a very costly renovation. You will need to consider things like replacing the cabinets, replacing the flooring, replacing some of the utilities, and even moving things around. You will need to keep this project under control. You will need to do something in order to have a good floor plan and also make good decisions in the remodeling of your kitchen. You will find that the virtual or three-dimensional plan is one of the best ways to bring the remodeling process.

There are a lot of reasons why you should use this tool. You will not only need to consider all the space that you are going to use, but also see how the layout will look. Keep in mind that one you take down a wall or move the plumbing around, you will not be able to put things back the way they were with ease. You will need to use the virtual kitchen as a way for you to feel comfortable with the choices that you have made. You will also be able to work with some of the many ideas that you have and make a better choice of which ideas work and which ones don't. Keep in mind that there are so many options when it comes to remodeling; you almost need to see what the final project will look like.

Also, you will find that the best advantage of the virtual kitchen remodeling tool is a way for you to see where your money is going and how you can cut costs. Being particularly passionate about corner kitchen cabinets, Linden Walhard was editing several articles on the subject. His contributions on kitchen cabinet design are published on his webpage and also many different web pages.

How to Choose the Most Practical Kitchen Countertops

There are various kinds of countertop materials available in stores today, and it would do you well to study them all thoroughly before deciding on one. There are countertops to match a big budget and there are also those that are extremely affordable. In the middle ground budget-wise are stone kitchen countertops which are fast becoming popular because of their desirable properties.

Stone kitchen countertops

If you're looking for material that will last a long time, then stone kitchen countertops should be your choice. Granite is a natural stone available in large slabs. They usually come pre-cut and you have to adjust your plan to the standard sizes of these countertops.

Granite kitchen countertops are preferred by many because they are stylish as well as durable. They are formed from volcanic activity and are naturally porous, so a sealer must be used regularly on a granite kitchen countertop.

According to the patterns on the stone, there's the variegated granite - stone that has irregular veins - unique, but difficult to match with other blocks. There's also the consistent granite, whose pattern is more consistent. And because they are natural, the countertop you would end up with may look quite different from the one you have chosen in a brochure.

On the other hand, silestone is an engineered stone, which means it is man-made. This type of material is as strong as granite and is composed of quartz. Slate and soapstone are not as hard as granite but are less porous, and are excellent choices for sleek modern kitchens or for people aiming for a farmhouse feel.

These, though, are not scratch-proof and can chip easily. They can be sanded out or left as is to add character to the kitchen countertop. Limestone and marble are not as hard but are not recommended for use as kitchen countertops because they can easily stain.

However, marble is still preferred by chefs for pastry-rolling. This is why you would often see professional chefs employing even a small piece of marble countertop in an otherwise all-stainless-steel kitchen. Generally, limestone is used with a matte finish while marble is smoothened to a flawless polished finish.

A rare type of kitchen granite countertops is lava stone. The French manufacturer Pyrolave glazes lava stone with colored enamel and heats it in a kiln. The end product is a crackled but glossy surface which can withstand all sorts of pressures from kitchen activity. The enamel comes in many colors, and you can choose the color you want to match your kitchen's interiors.

These are merely suggestions if you're looking for the best buy in kitchen countertops. If you already have an ongoing renovation but can't afford granite or any of the other stones, you can always use formica or laminates, which can be very cheap.

As for laminates, they may last a long time but you should be able to install them properly. Any unsealed areas, especially at the corners, may result in the area between the laminate and the old countertop to retain moisture and soon warp or even come off.

Why Granite Kitchen Countertops Are Bestsellers

Sure, you might say, there are other countertop materials around, which are just as durable. Take, for instance, engineered stone. This is made of 93% quartz particles and can be just as tough as natural granite stone. They can also be non-porous due to the minute amounts of resin added in their manufacture and because of the natural density of the stone.

However, people know that silestone, for example, is man-made and fabricated. Granite, on the other hand, is formed by nature and its patterns, therefore, are all natural, which is exactly what many people prefer.

There are also the concrete countertops which weigh the same as granite countertops, but are porous, and can easily absorb kitchen stains.

Countertops to last a lifetime

Granite can last you a lifetime and even more than a lifetime if properly installed. They can't easily be scratched, and people sometimes even use them directly as chopping boards. The downside to this, however, is that knives easily become dull when this is done.

No-fuss maintenance

There are no troublesome grouts to deal with when you install a granite kitchen countertop. In most cases, there's just one huge slab of granite which can easily be cleaned with a damp cloth. Stains from all sorts of foodstuff and sauces, and even from the bottom of blackened pots, can easily be removed.

A granite kitchen countertop is also heat-proof, which is of importance to many chefs. When you're whipping up a particularly large dish or planning a menu consisting of several courses, it helps to save time by not having to bring out countertop protectors.

Your granite kitchen countertop will be able to withstand this heat plus all the slamming and pounding done during intensive cooking. You probably won't have to renovate the kitchen because there's a very slim chance that your countertop will become weak and give way. What's most likely is you'll decide on a renovation on the other fixtures or cabinets and work your way around the durable granite kitchen countertop.

Are there any disadvantages to this construction material?

First off, granite is more expensive than the traditional kitchen tiles. However, it costs nearly the same as wood and concrete per square foot and is much less expensive than stainless steel.

Granite may also absorb stains if not properly sealed, and as mentioned earlier, it may dull knives when used as a chopping board.

If you think a granite kitchen countertop is your only choice, then start searching for the pattern and color that would best fit your kitchen. You may opt for a neutral color such as black or gray so you won't have to worry about your kitchen's color scheme.

How to Find the Cookware Set That Will Work For You

Cookware sets are among the basics in any chef's kitchen tools. When you look to buy skillets, saucepans, and Dutch ovens, you will find that they often come in convenient sets. The trick is to choose sets that have all the pots and pans you want.

First, look at the base material of the set. Even heating is the name of the game with aluminum core saucepans and skillets. Some pans have a T-fal Ultra-base to provide the same quality. The basic copper-clad stainless steel cookware that was so popular in the past distributes the heat well too. However, the copper bottoms are prone to tarnishing.

Next, consider the materials of the handles and lids. Glass lids are great because you can peek in without lifting the lid. Sometimes it lengthens cooking time or damages the quality of the food when you let that steam escape. Other types of lids can work, providing they are tight-fitting.

Handles should be ergonomically designed so that they fit your hand nicely when you are spending long hours in the kitchen. They should be made of durable materials like stainless steel, silicone, or bakelite. It is important to find handles that are also naturally cool to the touch when you use the cookware.

The assortment is something to think about when you are selecting your cookware. You might want a very large set with several different sizes of sauce pans and skillets or a smaller set with only one of each. You may just want one item of cookware, like a large stockpot that can serve multiple functions in the kitchen.

Some of the popular sauce pans are 1, 2, and 3 quart sizes. Certain companies also make a convenient 1 and 1/2 quart size. Saute pans, or skillets, come in sizes of 8, 9.5, 10.25, or 11 inches. There are even large cookers that resemble big skillets in a 5 quart size. Dutch ovens are usually available in 4, 5, or 6 quart varieties. When you are choosing your cookware set, think about whether you would like larger or smaller pans, or a variety.
Then, of course, there are the special features. Many cookware sets have some sort of non-stick coating. Some cooks consider this almost a necessity now. Other sets have extras like nylon utensils, measuring cups, and measuring spoons. Look for Dutch ovens with steamer baskets, as these come in very handy when making steamed vegetables.

You home is never quite complete without good cookware for your kitchen. You can find cookware sets and individual pieces that will suit just about any taste. Do not be afraid to shop around for awhile before you buy. You will be living with your cookware for a long time, so it makes sense to choose carefully.
