Kitchen remodeling is something that needs to be carefully planned using the size and configuration of the room. It's one of the most common home improvement projects in the U.S. When asked which room in their house they would most like to remodel, Americans overwhelmingly chose the kitchen. Kitchen remodeling is one of the best investments when it comes to both everyday use and increase in resale value. In addition, you might be able to save on energy as well by choosing energy efficient kitchen appliances.

What Are Marble Granite Countertops Made Of?

This countertop material has a special sheen and smoothness to it which makes some people mistake it as marble. If you decide on this material, you can choose from a lot of available colors ranging from black to grey to pink. Ech piece is unique as nature is your countertop's artist. You can be assured that no other buyer would get the exact same countertop as yours.

The durability of marble granite countertops

Granite is a stone formed from volcanic lava which has hardened under extreme pressure. These are quarried from all over the world, in exotic places such as Brazil and countries in southern Africa. These gigantic slabs go through a rigorous process of extraction as blasting is never employed.

In fact, the reason why full-sized marble granite countertops cost so much is because the workers go through a lot of trouble to extract them from their source. But if you know how to appreciate the worth of having one long piece of marble granite for your counter instead of separate tiles, then you'll realize that your purchase is worth it, after all.

It won't be easy to scratch or chip a marble granite countertop. It may take a heavy object such as a hammer purposely pounded on the surface to create a chip on your countertop. In any case, if it ever gets chipped, you can still easily camouflage it with some granite powder and glue.

The only thing that can cut this type of stone is a diamond-edged cutter or another granite stone. They have become the favorite material of designers and wealthy homeowners because they don't just last longer than any other kitchen countertop material; they also exude elegance and warmth to any room.

When a potential house buyer sees marble granite countertops in a home, skepticism instantly turns to admiration, as nothing raises the value of a home much like natural stone countertops can.

Despite their toughness, they have to be properly cared for, and daily maintenance for this material can be quite easy. Marble can be porous and is prone to cracking, but again, marble granite countertops are actually granite, so you won't have to worry about these problems.

However, granite is protected and given a luscious sheen by a sealant applied onto its surface, and this needs to be reapplied every 6 months or so. Otherwise, the stone may become prone to stains and seepage of liquid. In addition, as the sealant wears away, so too will the shine - and that's what makes your countertop look classy.

Even if installing granite countertops is heat-resistant, you should still avoid abusing this stone's property by constantly placing extremely hot pots and pans on its surface without using a trivet. The heat can spread over the surface quickly and may cause damage in areas where the sealant has eroded.

Which Should You Use - Marble Granite Tiles Or Slabs?

What should you do then, if you want to settle for no less than marble granite but at the same time are apprehensive about how much of the construction budget would be devoted to the countertops? Easy. You can opt for te more affordable marble granite tiles.

These tiles are actually the same stone, quarried from the same mountains, but are cut into smaller sizes. The most common sizes of marble granite tiles are 1 square foot each. They can cost as little as a few dollars per tile, compared to $60-$300 an up per square foot for whole granite countertop slabs.

These tiles are priced much lower because they usually come from fabrication trimmings. These pieces are definitely not thrown away but still sold to the public so that people who don't have unlimited budgets can still enjoy the beauty and durability of marble granite in their kitchens.

The disadvantages of marble granite tiles

We now know the great advantage of marble granite tiles - for a 6' x 3' countertop area, for instance, you'll spend about $54 on the marble granite tiles. If you purchase a whole panel, you'd be spending more than a thousand dollars for the same countertop area, and that's only for the cheapest type of marble granite. Those slabs with rare patterns and colors cost a lot more.

Now, if we won't take that whopping price difference into consideration, what do you think are the disadvantages of purchasing marble granite tiles, if there are any?

First of all, tiles, as opposed to a full countertop, is much more difficult to install. It can take several days to finish the job, and the workmanship has to be perfect to prevent future damage to the marble granite countertop.

In addition, if you have a special countertop design in mind, it will be more complicated to cut each tile to conform to your desired shape. On the other hand, the manufacturer would take care of an entire slab's cutting according to the design you have submitted. When it arrives at your doorstep, it's already been cut and ready to be mounted.

This, of course, would entail additional costs, whereas you'll only pay for ordinary installation labor costs if you go for a simple standard rectangular countertop. Now, even if the you decide to work on the tiles yourself to save some money, you'd still need to cut through the stone for plumbing, and this can be very tricky. You also need to be adept with the use of the special adhesive for use between the marble granite tile.

Be proactive and read on the installation of tiles carefully if you want to make a good DIY job. Make sure you use only the best products to be assured that your marble granite countertop will last a lifetime. No matter which one you ultimately select - marble granite tiles or a whole slab - you'll still get the same durability and beauty that granite is known for.

Kitchen Renovations - From Cabinets to Countertops

Setting your goals

This may be somewhat of a time waster for some people, but it actually will save you a lot of time and energy as you go through your kitchen renovation. If you have a purpose in mind, say, you want to entertain a small group of friends in it regularly, or you want it to be the hub of activity because you're always host to reunions and large parties, this has to be set and the design built around it.

For instance, if you're expecting a lot of use for the kitchen you're envisioning, then you might want to replace your existing formica or old tile countertop with a stylish and durable granite countertop. Granite kitchen countertops are the in things these days, and they are highly favored because of the elegance they exude and the durability you can depend on.

What to plan for prior to a renovation

Given this opportunity to fix your kitchen up as if starting from base one, you need to write out your plan on paper. Don't just rely on describing arrangements and details with the contractor, as there may be many things lost in translation.

You don't have to be an artist to make a rough sketch of the look you want to have. However, if you feel inadequate, then you can always use plug-and-play interior design programs which help you visualize and render your ideas in 2D, or sometimes even in 3D, as there are software which make it possible for you to 'walk through' your blueprint.

A kitchen renovation involves not just the kitchen cabinetry but also the appliances, the fixtures, and the kitchen countertop. Perhaps the most difficult to work on is the kitchen countertop. Rarely can one do this as a DIY project because of the difficulty of installing the countertop.

If you choose a granite construction materials, for example, you have to think twice befor asking a friend to help you out and tackling it as a wekkend project. To install one, you first need to take care of the installation of the cabinets, as you would need a template on which to base the kitchen countertop's measurements.

Taking measurements

This is a job for you to do if you want to estimate the amount you'll spend on new materials. It will be rather tough meeting the budget if you don't have a rough estimate of how many materials you'd require.

You might even get around to taking measurements for the countertop, but usually, the contractors would opt to take the measurements themselves. This is because all measurements for renovations have to be accurate to within fractions of an inch. Otherwise, costly repeat jobs would eat away at your budget.

Taking Care of the Budget When Renovating the Kitchen

Even if the kitchen has a drab and worn look, many people chose to ignore it as they are apprehensive of the costs that would be incurred by re-modeling the kitchen. Now, it is a fact that if you renovate the kitchen all at once it will be very expensive, but if you do one thing at a time the cost can be minimized and you will get the look that you want for the kitchen. You should also realize that renovating the kitchen should not be looked upon as an expense, but as an investment because it will definitely increase the value of your home.

This does not apply only to people who are thinking of selling the house immediately. The reason is that keeping you house neat and tidy would be a great asset in case you make sudden plans regarding your house. Even otherwise, if you want to gauge the worth of the house, it makes sense to keep it in a good condition. This holds especially true as most people in a house spend maximum time in the bathroom or the kitchen. Because of this, these two areas acquire a drab look sooner than other rooms in the house. If you wait for too long, the cost is only going to increase as you will have to change almost everything in the kitchen.

On the other hand, if you make small changes like painting the kitchen first, the cost will almost be negligible. For example, $50 or thereabouts would-be the average money that you will have to spend for painting the kitchen. In other words, you have plenty of options while choosing the paint for your kitchen. Changing some minor accessories in the kitchen is also not going to cost you a lot.

Normally, while renovating the kitchen the most costly feature is the labour. However, if you take care of small problems like repairing holes in the wall or changing the counter-tops immediately rather than waiting to fix all of it at one go, it will be easy on your pocket. Many people ignore small problems until they snowball into larger problems and there is no choice except to undertake a major renovation for the kitchen.

If you do not want to spend too much money, you could eschew the use of wallpaper and opt for paint. Another thing that would really help you is planning the re-modeling of your kitchen beforehand. By doing this, you can look for sales in home improvement stores or other places so that you get the things you want without burning a hole in your pocket.

Working Through the Options of Kitchen Faucets

Kitchen faucets have become an important design element in the overall look and feel of your new kitchen. Whether you're building brand new or doing a remodeling project you'll want to at least consider whether a new kitchen faucet is right for you.

There are a variety of styles available today. It's enough to make your head spin. The most common options are:

-Single handle
-Single handle pull outs
-Double Handle
-Wall pull out
-High arching faucets
-Bar and Prep faucets
-Pot fillers (a great bonus feature in any kitchen)
-Side spray handles

Probably my favorite "new" type that is becoming very popular in upscale homes is the pot filler. For those who have large stove top areas and do a lot of cooking, it's not always easy to carry a heavy pot of water from your sink across the room to your stove. To solve that problem some genius came up with the pot filler faucet that is installed over your stove and range area. It's entire purpose is to fill pots on the stove with water so you don't have to carry it across the cooking space. Brilliant!

In our kitchen we have a single handle with side spray pull out. It's not one of the high arching faucets, I learned that the taller ones can take a while for hot water to come through and while their height can be helpful for filling pots and buckets the slow water movement through them can be inconvenient. I really like the side spray pull out, when it's being used the water immediately stops running through the main faucet and instead is routed entirely through the sprayer. These are great for cleaning the far corners of your sink, and for filling containers that don't fit inside the sink itself. They don't fill as quickly as the regular faucet but they provide tremendous extra reach.

Top 5 Points to Remember When Searching For Kitchen Island Ideas

Lack of adequate workspace is the bane of modern-day kitchens. And so, countless innovative, groundbreaking kitchen islands ideas are conceptualized every day, in an attempt to make contemporary kitchen spaces more efficient and organized.

Whether high-quality kitchen carts, strong and stylish granite kitchen islands or affordable kitchen islands with stainless steel or marble tops, these ideas bludgeon you with a spectacular array of choices that make your small space sizzle beyond imagination.

These ideas succinctly capture the innate charm and charisma of your small kitchen and infuse style and elegance in accordance to your specific needs and desires. The marriage of high-quality materials and new-age, path breaking designs makes these ideas a colossal hit with homeowners all across the country.

Their ability to transform a too-generic-to-be-effective lackluster space into a comfortable yet chic work area has enabled them to acquire tremendous heft in the ephemeral world of interior design.

These Rules Get Top Billing

No doubt, all these ideas espouse values of practicality, comfort and style, but it is important not to get entangled in amorphous generalizations. I mean, you must ensure that the kind of kitchen island you choose must be perfectly in sync with the overall scheme of your space.

Here are the top six tips that will ensure that your kitchen island does not turn out to be a dull and dreary eyesore:

  • Make sure your kitchen is large enough to accommodate an island in the centre. Normally, L, U or G-shaped kitchens house these islands. If yours is a small space, invest in a food cart or a portable butcher's block.
  • If the island holds a cooktop, then you wouldn't want smoke, steam or strong odors to blight your sensory experience. Install an overhead ventilation hood.
  • Make sure all the other accessories like the dishwasher, trash can and recycle bin are placed in close proximity to the kitchen sink. Large pots and pans may require a deep kitchen sink within the island.
  • Adequate countertop space on either side of the island will attenuate all concerns about lack of work space.
  • Spare a thought for the kind of material used on the island- granite, marble or laminate. Make sure the material enables you to perform all chores, like rolling dough and chopping vegetables without any hassles.
  • While the importance of skylights and windows to let lots of sunshine in does not require illumination, the utility of recessed or pendant fixtures also comes into focus.

'Centre of attraction' certainly has a new meaning.

Granite Kitchen Countertops Polishing - How Beauty is Created

The natural beauty of granite

Granite is an igneous stone formed from magma, or molten lava which has hardened under extreme pressure for centuries. It is composed of quartz, feldspar, and mica, each one exhibiting different properties to give granite that distinctive crystalline look and hardness.

Due to the combined beauty of this natural stone, it is thus used as flooring material, for countertops, worktops, mantels, and even walling. Today, granite is especially popular for use in granite kitchen countertops. After the slabs are quarried from various areas around the world, they are then taken to fabrication plants where they are cut and polished to perfection. Most of these slabs go to Verona, Italy, where many fabrication factories for natural stone are based.

The polishing process

Basically, granite kitchen countertops polishing starts with a cutting process. Large saws are used to cut the raw stone, but these are not your ordinary saws. Diamond-edged saws are used to initially cut the slabs into manageable pieces. Bridge saws are then used to cut them into shapes that are more specific to their purpose - that is, for mantels, flooring, or countertops.

After the stones have been cut, they are now ready to be sanded. Granite kitchen countertops polishing is done by the use of rotating pads used to polish down areas that are raised until the rock gets a mirror finish.

On the other hand, some stones are not extremely polished for a matte finish, which some buyers prefer. Usually the rougher textures are reserved for flooring, because this is where smooth textures can be unsafe. Depending on the factory's clientele, the granite kitchen countertops polishing methods vary.

The modern polishers employed today can create a wide range of polished surfaces, such as soft, smooth, or shiny mirror finishes. There are also other types of specialized finishes, such as hammered or flamed, which are increasing in popularity among more innovative customers.

The last step in the granite kitchen countertops polishing process is the routing step. Routers are tools which are used to create the edging profiles you usually see on countertops, adding to their beauty. They can be as simple as a straight line or a bit more complicated for decorative purposes. The design all depends on what the customers are asking for.

Previously, many of these steps were accomplished by hand and so took several weeks to finish. However, with the use of new technology known as CNC, or computer numeric control, the granite Type Of Kitchen Countertop polishing process is considerably shortened and made easier. No longer does this process have to take weeks. The use of computers also provides for more accurate measurements and therefore higher-quality products.

The pros of using granite

This natural stone is formed under the earth's surface from magma, or volcanic rock, and cooled under great pressure. Because its particles are so dense, granite countertops can withstand even the most unexpected kitchen accidents and the regular pounding that goes with frenetic cooking.

If you love entertaining friends in your home, wouldn't it be great to have a work area that you can put any type of hot or cold food on, slice on, pound on, and clean up with a simple wipe of your ordinary soft cloth?

Even celebrities turn to this amazing stone for the construction of their countertops. Angelina Jolie has installed a handsome black granite countertop in her apartment in France while singer Ricky Martin prefers a circular granite countertop for his simple kitchen.

Countertops made of fegular laminates, Formica, or marble would pale in comparison to a wonderfully patterned granite countertop. They are made even more beautiful by sealants which give them that gloss and keep liquids from seeping into the rock.

To keep granite countertops looking new, this special granite sealant should be applied twice a year. It is used to keep bacteria from seeping to the stone and also protects it from potential stains. If you find it hard to source them, you can occasionally substitute with regular car wax.

Because granite is extra tough, many chefs chop and slice directly on the board, especially when they're in a hurry and have no time to whip out a chopping board. This is no issue for the surface, but the knives bear the brunt. It's impossible for even the toughest of blades not to get dull when used directly on a granite countertop, simply because of their hardness.

What chefs and homeowners appreciate about granite countertops is its ease of cleaning. Simply get a wet cloth to wipe simple spills with. To kill germs or clean stains which cannot be removed by just water, you can use a mild dishwashing detergent. The only thing you have to keep in mind is that the chemicals should be of neutral pH as acidic cleaners tend to eat away at the sealant.

When it comes to scratching and chipping, it's nearly impossible to scratch and chip granite countertops. It would take the use of a large heavy object, such as a hammer, pounded on the surface with great force, to chip it. And if ever a piece chips off, this can be repaired with granite powder and some glue.

For all these advantages, it becomes clear how granite countertops are head and shoulders above the other countertops in its price range. To make any room in your home look like it has jumped off the pages of an interior design magazine, choose granite Kitchen Countertop. They may be a bit more expensive than the other materials, but the cost is worth it considering it can last a lifetime.

Recommendations For Excellent Kitchen Lighting

All American homeowners consider their kitchen a place for preparing food, of course. But most of these homeowners also think of the kitchen as a center of activity for the home, where families gather, friends visit and where decisions are made.

With this in mind, it is quite important that serious thought be given to kitchen lighting, not only to provide enough light for reading and visiting, but also to help set the mood for a comfortable room. Putting some thought into how the lighting will work with the appliances, cabinets and colors of the kitchen is always a great idea.

The basic question to ask, of course, is "Which of the two general types of lighting will work best in a particular kitchen?" Functional lighting is relatively easy to choose. Selecting the correct locations for these functional lights is not a terribly difficult task. More though will have to go into what is commonly called "mood" lighting.

Of course, the more functional type of light is meant to help people see what they are doing, whether it is preparing food, reading recipes or visiting with friends and family. But it is this last activity that makes the correct mood lighting necessary.

Friends who have remodelled a kitchen will have great recommendations for the homeowner who is just beginning a kitchen project. They may be able to get things started in the proper direction with lights that establish a certain atmosphere in the kitchen. With only the most basic functional lighting, a kitchen will not only be uninteresting, it can also appear industrial/commercial. This is not always an ambience the homeowner should strive for.

Of course, the renovation of kitchen lighting should involve placing sufficient lighting over counters, kitchen islands and appliance workspaces. Using natural light can also be a great idea for the kitchen remodelling project. Well-placed windows or skylights can contribute to the efficiency and the atmosphere of the great kitchen. (Some even suggest using glass in the outer doors to add light to the room indirectly.)

Here is the basic idea for upgrading/remodelling kitchen lighting - Focus the lighting on three specific places in the kitchen. The most important places to direct new lighting are the sink area, the oven or cook top and the counter spaces where most of the work will take place. Some homeowners decide on lighting that is installed under the higher cabinets, in order to put good lighting directly on counters and sinks. This can be done with incandescent bulbs, fluorescent tubes or with the less common light-emitting diode (LED). All of these types should be available at hardware stores and home improvement stores. The variety may actually surprise the homeowner at first!

In recent years, more remodelling projects that involve lighting have an added factor - energy conservation. Some people use a sensor that turns lights off and on when someone enters or leaves the room (or a particular place in the room). Any experienced home improvement center staff member or remodelling expert should have great ideas that will help make kitchen lighting a successful part of the remodelling project.

Granite Countertops - The Reasons For Their Popularity

This is because granite is a beautifully patterned natural stone that comes in rich colors. If you're looking to build the ultimate countertop, you'll probably look beyond the ordinary kitchen tiles or the not-so-chic marble. The in thing these days is a granite countertop which makes any room exude elegance and warmth.

The composition of granite

This tough stone is made of quartz, feldspar, and mica. Although found in most any part of the world, the areas which have the largest amounts of granite are India, Brazil, Extramadura and Galicia in Spain, Portugal, and the Nordic countries.

It is formed from magma, or molten rock, which has been cooled under extreme pressure. The mica content of granite is responsible for the stone's resistance to heat as well as extremely low temperatures. Thus, a granite kitchen countertop can easily hold up to a tub of ice cream or a steaming bowl of hot soup, with hardly any danger of cracking.

Built to last

It's not man-made, but built by nature - and it's built to last longer than a lifetime. When you opt for a grantite countertop, you might find yourself regularly renovating kitchen shelves and cabinets and updating your appliances, but your countertop will hold for as long as you want it there.

You might think that the personal kitchen countertop, unlike those in chef's kitchens, doesn't take a lot of stress. But imagine all the pounding, the slicing, the blendering, spilling, and the chopping that goes on everyday - it's enough to make a cheap countertop fold up in a matter of a few months.

Not so with granite - they are hardy on the inside and protected by a sealant on the outside, giving them a smooth and shiny surface that is extremely elegant under the lights.

Sealants can wear off in due time especially when exposed to acidic substances. It is therefore important to reapply sealant every 6 months to ensure that the surface remains impermeable to grime and liquids.

A cornucopia of patterns

Your granite countertop is one-of-a-kind because no two slabs of granite are the same. Their natural formations make them unique, and the best way to make sure that you end up with the shade and pattern you really like is to go visit the shop personally to pick out your selection.

To make this job easier, you can go to www.thevirtualshowroom.com where you'll find a listing of nearly all the possible colors of granite countertops. Just by looking at this online catalog, you'll easily be overwhelmed with the sheer variety and the intricacy of the patterns on granite.

It's easy to fall in love with Type Of Kitchen Countertop because they lend a touch of class to any room. When in the past, you only got to see them in large hotels or plush mansions, now you can actually revel in a palace of your own when you substitute your old blocks or bland tables with granite kitchen countertops.

Why Granite Countertops Beat the Competition

Natural is often best

Granite is a very hard rock, next only to diamonds in toughness. It is thus only natural that it is used for a surface which takes a lot of stress daily. Sourced from countries rich in natural stone such as Brazil, Spain and Portugal, and many south African countries, to name just a few, granite is a combination of 11 or so chemical components that bestow its characteristic beauty.

Granite countertops are one-of-a-kind because the patterns in the stone have been designed by nature. Its crystalline beauty arises from the interplay between the felspar, mica, quartz, and several other chemical components which are embedded in the stone. You therefore won't be able to find anyone else with exactly the same granite countertop as you.

Apart from the wide range of colors to choose from (you'll come across exotic colors such as azul noche, cristal rosa, Napoleon red, cristal branco, or Klondike gold), you'll also marvel at the fabulous patterns that have naturally formed under the earth to make their way into your home.

'Tough' is what you need

Kitchen countertops need to be extremely durable because a lot of activity is performed on it. There's grinding, pounding, chopping, the constant vibrations of blenders and food processors, spills, subjection to heat and scratches from sharp utensils, and many other stresses.

Cheaper surfaces such as laminates or formica definitely won't be able to hold up to all of this whipping. Sure, they cost a fraction of what granite countertops cost, but if you compute its cost plus the losses incurred each time you have to refurbish or replace them, then you'll begin to realize how good a buy granite countertops can be in the long run.

Its toughness stems from hundreds of years of formation from magma situated deep within the earth's surface. It is also slowly cooled under great pressure. Staining is almost impossible because of its dense grain, and this is why it's not just used for countertops, but also for flooring, roofing, wall cladding, and others.

Easy maintenance

Its short-term maintenance only involves a soft cloth and some mild detrgent. Unlike Kitchen Countertop tiles whose grouts need to be meticulously scrubbed with a brush or wood countertops which have to be buffed and oiled as often as it sustains chips and stains, granite countertop spills are merely wiped.

To disinfect the surface, the only thing to avoid are harsh chemicals and those with high acidity. For long-term care, they sealant is applied every 6 months, and this only takes 3 to 5 minutes.

Engineered stone almost costs as much as granite but since they're man-made, many of them are mass-produced with the same color and pattern. With granite countertops, you'll be assured that what you have in your kitchen will be unique to you.

Stone Kitchen Backsplash - A Popular Choice

It has an appeal that has transgressed barriers. Folklore has it that it formed an inalienable part of all the ancient civilizations of the world. It is an intrinsic part of our glorious heritage, and carries a heft far greater than metal, wood or textiles.

If it's sensational, stately, and simply sublime it cannot be anything else but stone. And the best part is that a stone kitchen backsplash is all this and more.

No Canvas Too Big

When it comes to expressing style and sophistication, rather unabashedly, stone is the universal language. And so this innately beautiful, awe-inspiring material has become the supreme inspiration behind the most artistic of all creations in the kitchens- the backsplash.

It doesn't come as a surprise how this ageless material stops onlookers in their tracks when sprawled on the floor. So how does it sizzle on this small but significant space? Well, it proves beyond reasonable doubt that no canvas is too overwhelming to shake its iconic presence.

Of course, the dazzling array of designs, sizes, shapes and finishes that it woos customers with only enhances its rock-solid status in the contemporary interior design firmament.

Bring Style Home

A stone backsplash is defined by unparalleled charm and charisma. There are, however, numerous ways to establish a dialogue with this priceless material.

Granite invariably tops the list of those looking for unrestrained opulence, along with a great deal of substance to boot. The deliciously layered slate backsplash sets the tone for an engaging evening with both family and friends. Scratch-resistant limestone is something you just cannot maintain detached character towards. But if sheer magnificence is your mantra, then marble can easily become the brand ambassador extraordinaire.

Redoubtable, exceptionally luxurious and timeless- stone promises a captivating experience that is second to none.

Kitchen Color Schemes - Facts and Fiction

For time immemorial, colors have been the universal language to communicate all matters of the heart and soul. Whether fiery red, iridescent blue or gorgeous green, their individual identities are subsumed under one venerable, awe-inspiring term, 'colors'. Since they have more than just a token import on our moods and emotions, their hallowed presence is really not astonishing.

These dazzling and delightful shades have managed to extend their footprints to different parts of our homes, including the kitchen. Little wonder then that kitchen color schemes have managed to acquire frontline status in our collective decorating consciousness.

Color Schemes- Your Greatest Quandary?

Even though these hues fire our imagination, there's no denying the fact that choosing shades that exude warmth and effervescence can be quite an uphill climb. Here are a few tips that are sure to rescue your feckless attempts from limbo:

  • A few coats of cool, crisp and light colors will the much-desired shot in the arm for small spaces. Dark colors, on the other hand, are a strict no-no, as they make the space appear smaller.
  • The impact of natural light on colors must be considered earnestly. Try to bring artificial light sources and colors together, and it's a dead cocktail you are sipping.
  • A kitchen that faces north is sure to sizzle with cool tones, while a south facing space soaked in warm tones leave you gasping for breath.
  • The kitchen wall and cabinets do not have to the Cane and Able of the kitchen's d?r. A uniform color palette that creates harmony between these two elements is sure to cause a sensation.
  • If you are keen to experiment just a wee bit, try painting the walls in a shade that's bolder than the one on the cabinets. Something like off-white and pale-yellow will leave onlookers completely transfixed.
  • Striking contrasts with the help of bold colors create drama and intrigue with a seductively intense passion.
  • Allow the bold colors to transmit some of the magic to the chairs and tables, and watch the stoic calm in the kitchen become past tense instantly.
  • The electrifying combination of richly colored hand-painted tiles and plain tiles is a marriage made in design heaven.
  • Bright colors like yellow and orange put the zing back into your lackluster culinary experience.

So if you feel your kitchen is floundering for breath, it's time for you to play with colors that have a persistent place in your imagination.

What are galley kitchens? Like I said galley kitchens where traditionally located on ships. The where used there because of the limited kitchen space. A galley kitchen is a kitchen that has a continuous flow of hardware. The counters and sinks and even the stove are all connected together. The reason why this was designed this way without even a kitchen table was to conserve on space and increase availability to certain items and accessories. Galley kitchens can be found in homes where people do not have a lot of space or in homes where the owner just decided the he or she liked the design. Most people today rarely eat in their kitchens anyway so this is a very good type of kitchen if this is your situation. Lastly we will discuss why galley kitchens are so good to have. The main reason they are so good to have is because they are compact and durable. The provide you with the right elements to cook and non of the extra things that hinder progress.

7 Steps For Starting Your Kitchen Renovation

Before any remodeling project can begin, there is always going to be some demolition required. Depending on how far you are taking your kitchen renovation project, that could mean simply removing the countertops or stripping the room down to the bare studs. For many homeowners, the demolition can easily get out of hand when hammers and pry bars are flying around. While it may be a good way to get our your aggression, it could result in more problems than you had before. Taking your time and actually disassembling the room versus demolishing it, is the smart way to go. Here are 7 steps to remodeling your kitchen.

1. Think Safety. If you are going to around any electrical outlets or plumbing, it is important to make sure that both are turned off. As we all know, accidentally hitting an electrical wire can prove painful, if not lethal. While hitting a water line may not be lethal, it can sure cause a lot of headaches and a big mess.

2. Protect The Items You Are Keeping. For example, if your floors are in good shape, and you plan to keep them, it is important to cover them. The last think you want to do, is damage something during demo or construction and increase your overall remodeling budget.

3. Remove all Fixtures. If you are planning to keep any of the lighting fixtures, knobs, faucets, etc.. it is important to remove them and put them in a safe place. That way, when you are wildly swinging that hammer, you damage any of the fixtures you were planning on keeping.

4. Save the Trim. In most cases, you can usually save and re-use the mouldings and trim that you will find in the room. By removing them now, you will prevent any accidental chips or dings when removing the countertops and cabinets. Once you have the trim removed, start working on the countertops. Depending on the type of countertop material, it may be as simple as using a utility knife to cut the caulk or paint between the countertop and the backsplash and cabinets. For laminate or other artificial materials, you may also have to remove any screws that are holding the countertop to the cabinets.

5. Removing the Countertops. It is usually a good idea to have some extra hands to remove the countertops, but if you are trying to do it yourself, and it is a material like laminate, you can usually chop it into manageable pieces that you can haul out on your own.

6. Base Cabinets. Start by removing the drawers and any movable parts on the cabinets. Once you have that off, it is time to climb into the cabinets and remove any of the screws that are anchoring the cabinets to the walls. After the base cabinets are free from the walls, it is now time to separate them from each other. Most base cabinets will be secure with screws as well, so by removing those screws you will be able to separate and remove all of the base cabinets.

7. Taking Down the Wall Cabinets. When it comes to removing the wall cabinets it is a good idea to have an extra set of hands or a brace to support the cabinets. Unlike the base cabinets, this time start by removing any of the screws that connect the cabinets to each other. Once those are removed, you can start pulling out the screws that are holding each cabinet to the wall. By starting the wall cabinets with the screws that are connecting them to each other, you can safely remove each cabinet individually.

Once the cabinets are removed, it is either time to strip the drywall or plaster off, or start patching so that you install your new cabinets. By taking your time and not going with the sledge hammer approach to demolition, you can minimize the unnecessary damage and ensure that your project comes in under budget.

Planning Ahead For a Kitchen Renovation

Renovating your kitchen can add value to your home that is quoted as high as 70% return on your remodeling investment. This means if you spend $10,000 on your re-modeling your kitchen it may boost the value of your property by $7,000. Kitchen renovations are often dreaded, but the secret of success is in the planning.

The kitchen is one of the most frequently re-modeled rooms in a house. It is also one of the most used rooms, which raises an interesting point. It may be that it always gets a remodeling job because it is one of the busiest rooms in the home and therefore looks 'used' fairly quickly, but how do you renovate such a busy area?

Everyone gathers in the kitchen it is true, but this part of the kitchen's function can easily be moved elsewhere. This is not so with the other kitchen functions: i.e. food preparation, storage and meal clean-up. For a real renovation these functions will have to be moved to a temporary 'kitchen area'. Advance planning will be required to set up a second 'kitchen' before you dismantle the first.

The fridge will probably have to be moved out of its spot in the kitchen but not be able to travel too far due to its large size! You will also need a sink, a microwave and an electric toaster oven that is outside of the kitchen.

For a sink, you could look to your laundry room or a second bathroom. Both areas can be scrubbed out enough and remain unused for the duration of the few days when you will have no water, fridge or stove in your kitchen. Perhaps the top of the washing machine can double as some counter space.

You will also need to draw up a plan of menu's that can be easily prepared, brought in or heated up. Having to eat out should be avoided as it will involve some clean-up or clothes changing that will waste too much time.

In preparing for the reno itself, it is always a good idea to make three lists. These will include the features that you like about your old layout, the features that don't like and the new ones you want to include. Familiarize yourself with the latest innovations on the market.

Appliances with the new EnerGuide label will save you money on your energy bill. Consider new lighting, would you benefit from concealed-under-the-cabinet lighting? New compact fluorescent light fixtures are four times more efficient than standard bulbs. It is very inexpensive to replace only the cabinet doors on all your kitchen cabinets if you do not plan to alter the layout; check the Internet for details.

If you are changing your layout, ensure you follow the triangle set-up of stove, sink and fridge, but before you go to any of this trouble - double check that you will really be spending the money where you want it. Remember, paint, lighting and new cupboard doors are inexpensive and make a big difference!

Whoever Said Interior Designing is Expensive Did Not Know Much About It

We often make changes in the interior design of our house by looking around and replacing things for fun. But we often neglect the planning portion when we start doing interior designing. It is only on the basis of one's imagination that he does the modifications and changes to the interior design with little reasoning or planning behind it.

However, Interior Designing is an art which requires a lot of planning and one cannot excel in interior designing by watching professional designers at finish their work in an hour's time on some "while you were out" shows! A badly planned interior design often ends up to be an expense attempt to redesign the house, as it may take twice or thrice the original amount to repair the damages. Also, a bad project often ends up as a de-motivating experience.

Interior designing may not be always expensive if planned well. Interior Designing can be done on a low budget in many ways.

The first idea is to make changes that, though small, are capable of sending out a strong message. For Example, try simple changes in the plans of your living room if you have to give it a more spacious look, only after then should you make big changes. The small changes refer to moving furniture that often gives a room big-looking feel when moved from one place to another in the room, well placed mirrors on the walls also help the cause. The mirrors used should be artful and a method should be sought to place them on the walls without creating much damage to the walls. Window screens that are bright allow more light to enter. Such small changes often give out a very strong message.

Add a Dash Of Color To Old Walls

Sometimes even minute things turn out to be very expressive. But trying simpler and easier things might prove to be rewarding. Like, a bucket of good paint, though not very expensive can make a lot of difference. Some extra funding can even get the easy-cleaning paints that make cleaning of the walls a lot easier. You can get the sample of colors and decide the required colors for your interior design project by the help of the local paint retailer.

No experiment should be done on the walls and a sample should always be tried in order to get a fair idea on whether the shade would work or not. One should not be very critical at trying various paints, as it is never too easy to know what may actually look good on a wall without really trying it. Also, a second coat should always be put even if the first coat looks complete and enough. Laziness does not lead to a good interior design project.

One should not limit oneself to the initial thoughts on what to try for an interior design project. With a little more time, more eccentric ideas pop into your head when you start the planning of the project. A project done in such a way, be it for kitchen decorating ideas or otherwise, always ends up as a very good and rewarding one for the Interior designers.

Kitchen Designers - What You Should Expect

There are many advantages to hiring skilled kitchen designers to help you put together your dream kitchen, but make sure if you go down this path that you maintain an active interest in what is being planned.

A good kitchen designer should sit down with you and ask exactly what you want from your kitchen in terms of how it should look, how it should function and some of the things you want to include. It should always be your kitchen and designed to be exactly what you want. The role of the kitchen designer is to take your list of requirements and use their knowledge and visual flair to come up with a high-quality finished product.

It's all too easy to hire kitchen designers and just let them get on with the job. However, it is important to get the balance right and maintain control of the project. You want to allow your designer to be creative and you should respect the fact that they probably know a lot more than you about how to create a well-designed kitchen than you do. However, you're the one who is going to have to live with the end product so ensure you're consulted on important decisions and ask to be included on specific issues you have ideas on.

Make sure you agree a price up front with your designer and know exactly what you're getting for your money. Some designers will draw up a simple plan and then just hand it over to fitters without really caring about anything other than the money in their pocket. Others will remain on site and ensure that everything is finished to the highest possible standards. By hammering out a iron-clad agreement early on that both parties are happy with, it avoids nasty confrontations further down the line.

Hopefully this small bit of advice will give you the confidence to work positively kitchen designers and ensure you end up with a perfectly crafted kitchen.

Kitchen Tables and Chair Sets - A Decorating Essential

In many a quaint city in Europe or North America; the sidewalk would not be complete without the inclusion of the bistro. Maybe you have your favorite place you go for a coffee and Danish or croissant. But what is it that draws you to that little spot? Is it the romance, the company, the coffee, or the ambiance supplied in part by the bistro furniture?

Wrought iron tables and chairs have a great look and feel to them, and are very stable in any environment. But whatever your preference in style of furniture, there's nothing preventing you from bringing that style into your own kitchen, or on the patio. Just imagine giving very trendy Parisian kitchen tables and chair sets to your spouse for an anniversary gift. Maybe you had a romantic encounter with that person in Paris or Montreal, and you want to recapture that moment by bringing some very attractive items into your home.

Having decided that you do want to recreate the 'bistro' effect in your domain, it is well to consider a few things at the outset. It is all well and good to buy furniture at the local discount warehouse, but is the merchandise of sufficient quality, to allow years of service? Paying a few dollars more for a better item really makes good financial sense. And, having better quality items, it could serve a dual purpose, as kitchen tables and chair sets, and also great patio sets for those warm sunny days. A weatherproof patio set is vital, especially when it lives outside for an extended period and becomes subject to the elements.

It is good to also consider style, from the comfort point of view. It is one thing to visit a bistro for an hour or so and sit in a trendy chair, but to spend a lot of time in that chair, it needs to lend itself to comfort and be supportive of the lumbar regions. The legs of our furniture are also important, as the structure needs to be stable and strong. There's nothing worse than leaning elbows on a coffee table, only to find that it rocks back and forth like a see-saw, spilling coffee all over the place.

Bistro furniture comes in more than wrought iron of course, and there are the imitations. Some of these items need to be avoided for many reasons, one of which is the dubious quality it may provide. There are many plastics on the market today that look like iron, from a distance. But on closer inspection we discover the hidden truth.

There are also the kitchen tables and chair sets, which come, adorned with tassels, bows, and fabric. It would only require matching the colors and texture to current d?r, and it would complete the bistro effect.

So, no need to fly to Montreal or Cannes for that wonderful caf?le and croissant. Bring it all to the confines of your very own home. Kitchen table and chair sets a la bistro are yours for the choosing. Have fun.

Bakers Racks - They Give You Some Lovely Storage Space

In your kitchen, you just don't have as much storage and you'd like because you have all these decorative plates that you want to put on display, but instead they're all in storage. Well, you're in luck because there are a number of different furnishings that will give you that storage and display space with one of them being lovely bakers racks. One would really be a good investment.

What makes bakers racks such a great choice is their practicality, which is the result of their design. You see, one kind of looks like a book case and will have shelves where you can place different items. The only big difference is that instead of a middle shelf, there will be some sort of spacious table top. Now, this is the most basic design that this furnishing can have because there are also many others with different features that make them even more practical then they already are. For instance, you can purchase ones that have wine racks built right into them, providing you with the perfect spot to stow away your favorite selections. There are ones with other features as well including those with drawers, some that have stemware holders, and there are even ones that come with large cabinets, ideal for stowing away pots, pans, and cookbooks.

Along with adding some practicality to your space, bakers racks are also a good way to add a decorative touch to it as well. How is this even possible? Well, it is because there are all sorts of eye-catching options available from those that are made from wrought iron and feature looping scrollwork, others that are made entirely of wood and have a simple, yet stunning appearance with sleek lines, and there are even ones that are made from a combination of wood and metal. What makes them even more beautiful in addition to the materials that they are crafted out of are the different ways that they can be finished. For instance, the one made from wrought iron might have a patina finish with gold highlights while the one made from wood could have a cherry finish with a delicate cottage white finish.

The possibilities are simply endless when it comes to bakers racks and a really easy way to check out all the choices that you possibly could get is by hitting the Internet and doing some online shopping. It's like window shopping but better because you don't even have to leave your home to do it and when you do come across something that you really like, it generally will be at a pretty reasonable price and it will be shipped right to your home. That's pretty nice because then you don't have to worry about how you might have to transport it from here to there.

In the end, if it's a practical, eye-catching furnishing that you want, then bakers racks are for you. There are many fine options to choose from, all of which you'll be sure to enjoy having around for years.

Advice When Considering Blades For Your Knifes

The most important things that you need to think about when buying knives is the blade itself. You can purchase different strengths and flexibilities of knife by selecting different types of blades. There are a few things which you need to think about when deciding on the type of knife. It's worthwhile spending time to decide the type of knife that you want to buy as it's not possible to change once you've brought it.

Drop point blades allow you to have a lot of control over what you are cutting, these have a slow curve which allows a greater degree of control. These blades are very strong and so can be used to cut pretty much anything you would ever need to cut! They are ideal to take on camping trips. These blades have a curved point which is very useful during cutting. These types of blades are well suited to camping.

There are blades which have a clip in the blade. These have a lower point and allow you to have much more control over your cuts. You have more precision when making cuts and can hopefully create a better finished product. Clip point knives that have a curved belly are also much easier to slice with. Using these two types together you can get a brilliant knife.

You can get a lot of power from your knife if your blade is flat ground. This can greatly improve the feel and performance of your knife. You might be forgiven for thinking that this knife cost a fortune. They really are very impressive. They are very sharp and can cut through virtually anything. A tanto blade is very strong which improves the chances of your job being a success. By purchasing a quality knife you are more likely to be able to succeed doing your project. As with everything else the quality of the product is extremely important.

Another type of blade is the sheeps foot blade, this is particularly useful for slicing things rather than making deep incision cuts. If you want to slice food or other fairly soft items then a sheeps foot blade will probably be much more suitable than other types of blade. Many paramedics use sheeps foot blade so that they can quickly cut through seatbelts without harming the person. The sheeps foot blade is very useful.

You need to find out which type of blade will suit you the best, everybody will have a unique reason for needing a knife and so will need a different type of knife. Some knives can be sharpened with a bench grinder but you'll want to check with the manufacturer.

Every type of knife works best at a certain job, think about what it is you want your knife to do so that you can find the right knife for your needs. When you have found the right knife you will be able to enjoy it for many years to come.

Kurt Schefken's long articles can be discovered on quite a few web sites with information about bench grinder and bench grinders. You can discover his work on bench grinder reviews at http://www.insidewoodworking.com and various other sources for bench grinder reviews tips.

Things to Consider in Kitchen Remodeling

The thought of doing some kitchen remodeling in your New York City home or apartment might have crossed your mind a dozen times. But you keep putting off the idea because you do not know where to begin.

As in every project, the key to a successful kitchen remodeling in New York is planning. Create an outline of the steps you need to take. Below are the things you have to consider before turning on the green light on your renovation project and hiring an NYC contractor:

1- Set your budget. Your kitchen remodeling budget must be set before you start your project. In line with that, be sure that you will be able to manage your budget wisely all throughout the renovation process to avoid having to stop the project with an unfinished kitchen.

2- Gather ideas. With all the media sources available nowadays, there are a lot of ways to gather ideas for remodeling your kitchen. Do a lot of research! Check out magazines, watch lifestyle channels with home improvement shows and search the Internet for the latest innovations that you might want to have in your kitchen. Jot down your notes and hold on to them. They will prove themselves useful during the planning.

3- Know your wants and needs. This is the step where you narrow down the ideas you have jotted down to fit in to your taste, your needs and budget.

4- Request an estimate. Contractors in NYC offer quotes or estimates for renovation projects, including, but not limited to, kitchen remodeling. While requesting for an estimate cost, be sure to bring up your budget, your ideas, and the set up of your home or apartment.

5- Hiring a contractor. When choosing a contractor for your NYC home or apartment to do your kitchen remodeling project, be sure to get one that is made of a team of experts in their fields. New York General Contractor, for instance, is a one-stop-shop for all renovation needs. They also give you advise on the constantly changing building codes to inform you whether or not what you wish to construct and/or renovate is according to the city regulations.

6- Design. Be comfortable to discuss everything you want and need for your kitchen with your contractor and designers. Communicate every single detail - from the backsplash, cabinets and countertops to tiles, sinks and faucets. Should you wish to spice up your kitchen with accessories, your designers will certainly put them in place that will perfect the look of your kitchen.

Kitchen remodeling in a big city like New York may be a tedious and daunting task. Having a skilled NYC contractor will definitely ease you off your worries and help you achieve the kitchen you have always wanted. The best thing about renovation projects, particularly kitchen remodeling in NYC, is that it adds a hefty percentage on your property value, which guarantees a good investment from every penny you spent.

Turning Your Remodel Idea Into a New Kitchen

When starting a kitchen remodeling project, it is recommended that you do it in not only a kitchen, but your kitchen and also during the daylight hours but not during a catastrophic event like a tornado or hurricane. Okay, I know. Enough of the dry humor.

The point is, though, you must thoroughly plan each phase of a kitchen remodeling project. Dry heads just cannot undertake this most creative and value-affecting home improvement project. Some might suggest creating your main remodeling idea by holing yourself up in a pub for at least a night, at the end of which you may have many kitchen remodel plans or ideas for dry rot removal or reinventing the wheel.

You may also have a deep archive of horror stories from others attempting kitchen remodeling projects. Don't let that scare you off, though. There have also been many successful DIY kitchen renovation projects. Okay, maybe getting your ideas from those enjoying a cold one at your local pub is not the best source of remodel information, but it can be a nice break from the demands of such a large DIY project.

For any kitchen remodel or dry rot removal, there are tools you will definitely need to accomplish the job. Here's a brief list:

Your neighbor of friend's tools;
A lot of tarp;
Plenty of beer;
A radio or television for sound effects;
A telephone to call the ambulance; and
At least ten friends who promise to help but do not show up.

Then, spread your plans out for easy review, open up a cold beer to get you thought process started, say "uh-huh" often and decide that the best way to research the projects is by watching a week full of Telly. This is a matchless opportunity for a new look and new feel to your home.

The best time to undertake any kitchen remodeling or dry rot removal project is after some type of natural catastrophe, since you really do not have much of a choice at that point. Be sure you have the proper flood or fire insurance, though, to help pay for the project. If the catastrophe was very large, you may qualify for some type of government assistance like a grant, for instance. Do not spend too much time grieving over the destroyed house, particularly the kitchen. If you were considering remodeling some part of your house anyways, this is a good time to do it. Think on the positive side. You will not need to mop the floors or clean the oven for quite sometime now. So, round up your friends and family. Head off the pub or whatever is left and start planning your remodeling project. Or, just have a good time. At least you're not a writer stuck writing an article about kitchen remodeling humor.

The copywriter Peter Mason is interested in topics relating to new kitchens and kitchen designs. Sharing his passion in detailed publications on new kitchens and cabinets kitchen the columnist confirmed his experience in the field.

Selecting Material For Kitchen Countertop

When it comes to kitchen counter tops today, we want embodiment of durability, high-performance and elegant looks. It also needs be able to bear the rigors of kitchen specifically by being heat proof, stain resistant and easy to maintain hygiene. But the irony lies in the fact that there is no single material which would encompass all the qualities that we are looking for. The best way would be to compromise on a material which would give most of the properties without being too expensive.

Well the possible contemporary kitchen design material for kitchen countertops could be wood, stainless steel, laminates, glass, concrete and ceramic. All of these materials have demerits which go against the thought of what an ideal material from which kitchen counter should be. Also all these materials are seemingly outdated and do not give the feel of an up country market. The best bet here would be to go in for natural stones like marble, granite, limestone, corian or soapstone. Each of these stones has its merits as well as demerits. Marble and Granite are seemingly expensive but they do cover all the aspects which are needed for an elegant, good looking and colorful kitchen countertop. Limestone or Soapstone tend to change color with time. With corian again the issue is about being pricey.

Considering all the materials with their merits and demerits it would be much better to freeze up on a budget, select the marble or granite with the color of your choice and find a professional granite / marble installer to get the kitchen countertop done the way you have always wanted.

Marble City Company is the largest importer of granite slabs. Also, it is the leading installer and fabricator granite kitchen counter tops. It provides wide variety of natural stones like marble, soapstone, limestone etc.

Kitchen Pot Rack - Who's Back Hurts?

Earlier in the week I had just finished washing the dishes and I was putting them away in my cabinets. It felt like I was playing Russian roulette with my pots and pans. I had just stacked and unstacked the last pot when a shearing pain tore through my back. That made me realize I had enough. There must be a better way of storing these essential items. After I called my husband to come and help me up, I started my research.

I am now the proud owner of a stainless steel wall mounted pot rack. My kitchen is now the room that I love to enter. It makes me feel organized, professional and most of all comfortable. It has enhanced every element of my kitchen. My kitchen seems friendlier and I have more free time to prepare my meals. It has become the focal point and wow factor of my room.

We all need more space and less clutter in the kitchen. It makes our lives run smoother and gives us a peaceful disposition. The pot rack helps upgrade and update the room that we spend so much time in. It is not only functional but eye catching to anyone that beholds it. These little details make the difference between an impersonal kitchen and the room that you never want to leave.

There are some questions you must ask yourself before you go out and buy a kitchen pot rack. Your first questions should be where you will put this in your kitchen. The options are hanging, wall mounted, lighted or stand alone. Hanging pot racks are generally placed over kitchen islands or peninsulas. Wall mounted pot racks are usually positioned below or between cabinets. If you have more then enough space, a stand alone can be very attractive. For additional lighting, a pot rack that comes with downlights illuminates the kitchen and will add ambiance to your working space. Ceiling pot racks come with grids which allow you to adjust the hooks for hanging your pots and pans in a way that will be most convenient for your reach.

The wall mounted pot rack that I choose had an extra shelf for storage for my cookbooks and decorations.

Some of the shapes that are available are rectangular, oval, bookshelf, round, dome and square. There are also various materials. You can find them in black, copper, silver, brass, stainless steel, bronze, chrome, wrought iron and wood.

You can purchase pot racks that compliment your existing kitchen colors, or you can make a statement with highly contrasting finishes. You could also consider mixing the finishes for a more stunning dramatic effect.

The pot rack serves three main purposes all at the same time. They are decorative, add much needed space and keep your pots and pans handy and protected.

Hanging your pots and pans prevents wear and tear from storing them inside each other. It is also an added attraction. If you own beautiful cook wear why not display it?

It is always wise to strictly follow the installation instructions specified by the manufacturer. Pot racks can get very heavy when weighed down with all your pots and pans. The amount of weight a pot rack can hold depends on how it is hung from your wall or ceiling. If you have any questions or concerns, I would suggest you consult a professional in your area.

Most kitchen pot racks are easy to maintain and clean. They extend the life of your cook wear while at the same time helps reduce the cook's frustration.

Do yourself a favor and move your cookware out of those back bending lower cabinets. Keep them at an arms reach in your innovative dream kitchen.

The Eco-Friendly Kitchen Remodel

The environment may be suffering from the endless barrage of technological advances, but your kitchen remodeling project doesn't have to contribute to the eco-unfriendly trend. Fortunately for the modern-day homeowner, there are many ways to remodel a kitchen without leaving behind a jarring impact on the world in which we live.

Late last year, Low Impact Living, a Web portal devoted to helping individuals lower the environmental impact of their home and their daily life, published an article titled "Low Impact Living: Green Your Kitchen." Therein, advice was given on how to reduce the "biggest resource hog" room in the house: the kitchen.

More specifically, the site offered the following seven suggestions to homeowners who are planning a kitchen remodel on how "to lower their environmental impact and also to live in a healthier home":

Tip #1: "Use energy-saving appliances." - In particular, the article recommends choosing appliances with an Energy Star label. Such appliances, the author points out, "can save as much as 50% of your energy and water use, and can cut your carbon footprint by 1000+ pounds, compared to standard appliances."

Tip #2: "Use compact fluorescent lighting." - These types of bulbs "use 1/4 the energy and last up to 10 times as long as standard bulbs," the author enthuses.

Tip #3: "Recycle and Re-Use." - Never throw away anything that can be used again. The world's landfills will thank you.

Tip #4: "Eat Organic, Eat Local." - Organic eating "keeps chemicals from running off into our oceans and rivers from non-organic farms" while local eating "means tons of carbon dioxide are not released into the atmosphere in the process of transporting food to you."

Tip #5: "Get green cleaners." - No more breathing "in a fine mist of harmful (to you and the environment) chemicals" every time you spray.

Tip #6: "Compost." - "Save landfill space and make your own rich potting soil using a composter," the author suggests

Tip #7: "Only run your dishwasher when you have a full load." - You'll save energy and water at the same time.

Tips # 4 through #7 are up to you once your kitchen has been remodeled, but tips #1 through #3 can be taken into consideration prior to your kitchen remodeling's commencement. To work maximum green friendliness into your remodeled kitchen, you'll want to consult an online provider of kitchen remodeling ideas and links to a wide array of recognized leaders in the world of cabinet, countertop, faucets, sinks, flooring, lighting, ventilation, window and appliance manufacturers. That way, you can pick and choose the kitchen remodeling options that are most environmentally friendly.

An environmentally friendly remodeled kitchen with Energy Star appliances, compact fluorescent lighting bulbs and recycle-encouraging furnishings is just a few mouse clicks away.

Home Remodeling to Increase the Resale Value

All of us need change from time to time at various levels. These changes bring new energy into our life and they take the boredom out of our lives. One of the areas that all of us love to see some change is our home. Home improvements and remodeling not only will bring in a new look to your house but it will also dramatically increase the resale value of your house. By remodeling a house that you are planning to sell you will not only recover the investment that you made on the home improvement, you can also increase the value of your house from anywhere between 25% and 30%.

One of the things that come first to our mind is kitchen remodeling and this is one of the most popular remodeling areas. So much can be done to improve your kitchen and it depends on the budget and the size of your kitchen. For example, you can think of changing the entire kitchen cabinetry. By approaching a good home remodeling products company you can get a lot of remodeling ideas for your kitchen. By sending the measurements of your kitchen you can get your cabinet design layout at a nominal fee and once you order the remodeling products from them many companies will give a total refund of the design fee. It is important that you express your expectations clearly so that the layout developed can meet those requirements effectively. You can also view the photo gallery of kitchen cabinets online to get some design ideas.

Another area that you can consider for remodeling is your bathroom; you can add glass block showers that will give a facelift to your bathroom. One of the areas the buyers pay attention when they want to invest in a house is the bathroom; people are really fuzzy about this particular area of the house. So by going in for a simple remodeling like glass block showers you can attract buyers.

Mantles and shelves take the monotony of the plain walls from your house. They give the required projection for the walls and an expensive look. You can go for pre-made mantle designs or custom designs to suit your taste and budget.

If you want to give some improvement to your home exteriors, you can go for vinyl shutters. Vinyl shutters are replacing wooden shutters these days because they do not have the danger of warping or rotting so it is long lasting. You also do not have to worry about any further maintenance of your vinyl shutters unlike the wooden shutters that require regular treatments and painting.

So when you are planning for your home improvement or remodeling invest wisely so that you can enjoy giving your house a whole new look and at the same time you can increase the value of your house. Depending on your budget and taste you can remodel your house in phased manner so that you do not have to invest a lot of money at the same time. The investments can be spread across over a period of 3 to 6 months depending on the resources available.

How to Care For Granite Countertops

If you don't know already, Granite is a gorgeous stone often used for countertops and flooring in kitchens and bathrooms. Unlike marble, granite is more durable and easier to care for. Real natural granite offers much sought after qualities such as durability, wear ability, and a rich design that is unmatched by synthetics.

Granite is an all natural, naturally formed stone that is simply harvested from quarries, cut, polished, sealed, and installed. Granite is available in many natural styles and colors such as black, pink, brown, grey, and 275 other varieties. Its enduring qualities and easy care maintenance make it the perfect stone for countertops in bathrooms and kitchens.

All About Granite

Granite's many colors are due to the various minerals that are found in the rock naturally. Granite comes from all over the world, the different regions and different environmental factors that lend to its uniqueness are due to these minerals or cofactors of the regions in which granite formed.

In addition to its main component quartz crystal, it also contains various amounts of feldspar, mica, copper, iron, and other metals. Some granite may even have bits of gold or silver. These are all formed into a hard stone by heat and pressure over time. While the rock is forming, rain adds other minerals to the granite. The amount of the ingredients as well as the way the granite is formed depends on the region of the world it comes from. Granite is available on every continent and in every country. The granite from each region is unique to that region.

How to Care For Granite

Granite is a natural indigenous rock that is not able to be duplicated by man. It's sought after qualities include scratch resistance, stain resistance, heat resistance, and wear ability. Granite is a figure that becomes part of your home. Its long lasting durability means that you will not have to replace it every few years like synthetic products. Even so, granite still requires proper care if it is to last a lifetime.

First, granite is very durable, but it is not stain resistant. For optimal stain resistance a highly durable sealant coating is placed on the granite. Since granite is extremely porous, this coating is important. Therefore, it is this sealant coating that needs the attention when it comes to caring for your granite stone.

Second, granite is scratch resistant. This means that it should not show wear and tear as readily as synthetic products or ceramic tile. However, this does not mean it should be used as a cutting board nor should cleaning products such as steel wool or comet be used to clean it. These can also dull the sealant coat and expose the granite to the possibility of stains.

Third, while granite is heat resistant, it is still wise to place a barrier between the granite and hot pans. When taking items from the stove or oven and placing them on the granite simply place a trivet, thick towel, or hot pad between them. Even though granite is heat resistant, over time the stress from hot objects can begin to show by dulling the sealant.

Fourth, to care for your granite and improve its long lasting durability, it needs to be cleaned properly. Simply wiping up spills as soon as they occur so that no abrasive agents or scrubber pads need to be used is ideal. To keep the surface clean a simple mild cleaning solution such as dish soap or multi-surface cleaner should be used on a daily basis. Spray or wipe on the cleaner, and rinse off with a damp cloth. Dry the surface with a lint free cloth to reduce water spotting or lint trails.

Why Granite?

Granite is an all natural stone that is both durable and beautiful. Of all installed surfaces it is the strongest and most durable. It is heat resistant, scratch resistant, and when sealed it is also stain resistant. When cared for properly, granite will likely outlive your home. With over 275 colors and textures to choose from, you can be sure to find one that will add a touch of beauty and elegance to your home. Granite is an excellent choice for your home, bathroom, flooring or even fireplace surround. Keeping your granite cleaned and well maintained will ensure your granite countertops last a lifetime.

Marble Vs Granite Countertops - Which is Better?

Many people want to know if marble or granite is better for countertops in their kitchens and bathrooms. After all, both are beautiful materials, both lend beauty and elegance to any home, and both are available in many varieties to suit any preference.

On the other hand, there are a few differences between these two stones that you should seriously consider before choosing between them. Rather than making this decision for you, why don't we let the facts speak for themselves.

The Pros and Cons of Marble

First of all, Marble is a metamorphic rock. Its basic ingredient can be found everywhere from limestone to baking soda, from

calcium carbonate to lime (white wash). The basic ingredient goes by many other names depending on its application and its form. Limestone, a sedimentary form of calcium, which is found naturally in the earth, undergoes intense heat and pressure within the earth to be formed into what we know as marble.

This rock can also be exposed to heat and grinding to become a filler ingredient for medications, writing paper, plaster of

Paris, lime (white wash), and cement hardener. This means that marble, although beautiful and durable, is porous and very easily destroyed by any type of acid, heat, or water. Even with a seal coating applied religiously every year, no types of chemicals may be used to wash the countertops made from it. It cannot take much abuse from water, acids such as lemon or orange juice, or high heat from pans. These will all destroy the seal coating and the marble beneath.

Since marble is so porous, it is also easily stained. One single scratch can allow liquids or even oxidation from the air to

leak under the seal coating and stain the marble. This doesn't mean that it should not be used. Marble is ideal for use in low traffic areas or for sculpting amazing art out of. But for the high traffic use of a kitchen countertop, a floor, or a bathroom countertop, marble just means high maintenance.

The Pros and Cons of Granite

Granite is also a metamorphic rock. It is a composite of quartz, silicon, feldspar, mica, and several other minerals. It too

is formed under high pressure and heat. It is also just as beautiful. It is not as porous as marble and is resistant to chemicals and acids. The presence of quartz in granite provides the granite with a durability and hardness unlike that of soft marble.

Granite is more stain resistant and wear resistant than marble. While it is not perfect, granite holds up far better in high traffic uses such as counter tops and flooring. With a proper seal coating on granite and with proper care, granite will last for many years without scratching, staining, chipping, or wearing away. If properly cared for, granite may not need to be resealed every year.

Granite can also be quarried locally. This means that, unlike marble, granite will not have to be shipped from South America or Europe. Granite can be quarried in Arizona, New Mexico, and some northern states. Granite is also easier to ship. Even if the granite you select comes from South Africa, China, Asia, or Europe, there is more granite available. This means it's easier to obtain and less expensive to use.

Ultimately It's Up To You

Whether you choose granite or marble is up to you. When asked which one is better for the high traffic use of countertops, the answer should be clear, granite will simply hold up better. When properly cared for under normal conditions, granite is easier to care for and is resistant to staining, chemicals, heat, and fracturing. Granite is available in more colors and patterns and can be custom ordered for less than marble.

Vintage Scouring Powder Tins Charm Today's Collectors

Powdered cleaners, or scouring powders, were favorites in households during the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. Today collectors decorate their vintage kitchens with these colorful products of yesterday.

Technically, powdered cleaners are called pumicites, and they were used as scrubbing agents for sinks, stoves, tubs, and floors, as well as for cookware, especially porcelain or enamelware products, which were popular in the dime-store era.

Their cleaning and polishing action is provided by fine particles of minerals, such as calcite, feldspar, quartz, and silica. Soap or surfactants are also included, to remove oil and grease films from dishwashing. Some of these products have bleach added to remove food, mold, and mildew stains. Some powders may have also added rust remover as well.

One of the most recognized polishing soaps or cleansers was Bon Ami, manufactured by the J.T. Robertson Soap Company of Manchester, Connecticut, in around 1886. One of the main ingredients, feldspar, was originally discarded until it was realized that this soft mineral when combined with soap cleaned surfaces without scratching.

Bon Ami's famous logo, "Hasn't Scratched Yet," has become an advertising textbook slogan. How did the chick's relationship to Bon Ami come about? According to the company's explanation, "A newly-hatched chick will not scratch the ground for food for two or three days after it comes out of the shell because it is still living off the nutrients of the yolk. As neither chicks nor Bon Ami scratch, the chick is an appropriate symbol with the trademarked 'Hasn't Scratched Yet.'" Sales of Bon Ami declined in the 1960s, and the product almost disappeared from shelves, but it returned under new acquisition in 1971. To boost sales, in 1980 the company launched a major advertising campaign with the headline, "Never Underestimate the Cleaning Power of a 94-Year-Old Chick with a French Name."

Kitchen Refurbishment - The Do's and Dont's

We all like the idea of a brand new kitchen in our home. A room where you spend time cooking, relaxing and socializing. All these things are less likely if your kitchen is looking a little drab. Ask yourself: When did my kitchen have a good face-lift?

The kitchen is often one of the most expensive areas within a home to maintain, update and install, which is why you want to get things right when you decide for a change. This article will give advice on 'Do's' and 'Don'ts' to bear in mind when you are thinking of updating your existing kitchen.

Do's

1. When thinking about a kitchen refurbishment, strategically think through which areas you have budgeted for and aim to improve. Are you looking to do a small scale refurbishment or change everything?

2. Get the opinion of someone else on which areas could be improved within the kitchen. Often a new perspective can give fresh ideas to the project. Don't take opinions too seriously though; they are only trying to help!

3. Read industry specific magazines, such as Home Improvement magazines, kitchen brochures and lifestyle magazines for ideas. Often the little details within these pictures can make a big difference, so try and apply them to your re-design.

4. Set yourself a clear budget and stick to it, source all the necessary improvements within that budget.

5. If you are looking to refurbish your kitchen the most cost effective way to gain a new look and feel is to reface the kitchen doors, replace worktops, doors handles taps and some furniture.

5b. Often the doors may look a little tired. Just 'reface' them (fix new units onto the front) rather than purchase brand new doors. By fitting replacement door covers on the existing units and accessorising with new handles you mimic new doors for less.

6. Accessories are a fantastic way to way to brighten up the kitchen and look more modern (should that be your style). Buy accessories that bring that look to life; for example a new kitchen table and traditional kitchen cupboard handles would achieve a warmer look, without the need to replace everything in sight.

Don'ts

1. Don't be underprepared. Make sure you know everything about what changes you are making and how you are to go about achieving them.

2. Don't spread your budget too thin, otherwise the refurbishment will lose focus and overall impact. Instead focus on your targeted areas and make them a success. Also shop around for the prices on the same products; you will be surprised at differences in price between retailers.

3. Measure twice cut once. A mantra used by carpenters, but also applies to you when ordeing new kitchen doors etc. Make sure you measure your fittings correctly, as this could be very costly to get wrong.

4. Don't be shy about seeking help from a carpenter or even a neighbour if you are unsure how to install new products or fittings.

5. Make sure your new kitchen cupboard doors match the accessories. There's no point refacing kitchen doors with aged "oak effect" doors and finishing them off with ultra-modern chrome handles, it just won't work. Same goes for kitchen taps and other accessories.

In summary, a kitchen refurbishment should be a great way to save thousands, rather than having a brand new install. Go with something that you are comfortable with, and will be happy to spend a lot of time around. If you follow the tips, I'm sure you will be on your way to success. That satisfaction you get when you designed the kitchen yourself is just something money can't buy.

Taking the Indoors Outside - Outdoor Kitchens Extend Your Possibilities

Are you hoping to expand your home? Instead of considering an addition, give some thought to expanding your livable space - outdoors. More homes are moving towards creating outside spaces that function as an extension of the home, essentially outdoor rooms. These spaces include room for relaxing, entertaining, and cooking.

The first point of creating one of these outdoor rooms begins with outdoor kitchen planning. These kitchens are more than a mere area to barbeque; instead outdoor kitchens include a variety of appliances (refrigerators, sinks, and of course, grills), extensive countertops for food prep, and dining areas.

Some people start their preparations by consulting a kitchen design software package. While many software programs offer great details for traditional "indoor" kitchens, many are adding outdoor kitchen planning as one of their features.

Planning an outdoor kitchen isn't that different from the equivalent indoor kitchen. You still need to plan space for countertops, plan for plumbing and cooking. A kitchen design software package can help you get started brainstorming. You'll see some sample outdoor kitchens that you can adapt to your home.

When it comes to outdoor kitchen planning, you need to consider a few key factors:

* How much time do you spend outdoors?
* How much room do you have to devote to an outdoor kitchen?
* Do you cook extensively outdoors (or would you like to)?
* Do you like to entertain?
* How much money are you willing to spend?

The two most important factors will be space and money. If you aren't willing to sacrifice much backyard space, you might have to consider a simple, installed gas grill with a small counter space. If you truly want to create an outdoor room, you have to be willing to devote about the same amount of space as you would to a room in your home. For extensive outdoor kitchen planning, you'll need to consider the location of plumbing and gas lines. You may also need to consider creating overhangs or roofs to protect your appliances from the elements.

Your kitchen design software will help you plan an outdoor space that utilizes a good kitchen design - easy access between the grill, refrigerator, and sink. Once you have these elements in place, along with seating for you and your guests, you'll have a brand new space you can enjoy, with all the conveniences of an indoor room. You'll probably find you spend more time in your outdoor kitchen, than you ever spent in the indoor equivalent.
