Minimizing Your Credit Card Interest Payments

Sometimes you don't realize how much interest you are paying on your credit cards until you look at your end of the year statement or begin to follow your statements closely and see that your balance is not decreasing much. One of the most common causes of escalating interest payments is that of only making minimum payments, especially if you have a high credit line and frequently use your card. It may not seem like much of a problem until you want to use the card and discover you don't have very much available credit to make purchases or take cash advances.

One of the easiest ways to minimize interest payments on your credit cards is to pay them off during your grace period, but that is not always practical, especially if you have a high credit line and use your card to make larger purchases such as furniture and airline tickets. If you frequently make these types of purchases, you must get into the habit of making substantial payments on your credit cards each month. Making only the minimum payments will not only add to the amount of interest you pay, you will soon find that you have no credit to make additional purchases.

Another way you can minimize interest on your credit cards is to choose the cards with the lowest interest rates and look for those that offer low or no interest for a trial period. Prior to the expiration of the introductory interest rate you secure another card with a low introductory rate that includes balance transfers. With so many different offers today it makes little sense to remain loyal to a credit card issuer. A few decades ago customers tended to be true to their credit card issuer, but there is too much competition today and credit card issuers are less likely to give their customers a special price just to maintain their business.

Even if you are unable to pay your credit card balance in full each month, making larger payments and paying on time will minimize the interest you pay. This is especially important today since many credit cards have a special interest rate that is only effective if you pay your bill on time every month and don't go over your credit limit. If you do either of those things your interest rate may increase as much as twenty per cent, and depending on the credit card issuer, it may remain at that rate for a substantial amount of time. Make sure you know the regulations concerning the interest rate on your credit card so that you can avoid any pitfalls.

Do Cell Phones Make Flying Unsafe?

If you've ever been on a plane, you've no doubt heard the instructions to turn off your cell phone before taking flight. This is something most people are familiar with, and most people, when boarding a flight, make sure to turn their phones off. But do you know WHY it's important to turn phones off during a flight?

There are some crazy rumors out there. Some people believe that a cell phone's frequency can mess up the controls of an aircraft. Some even believe that this interference can cause a plane to crash.

Are these claims accurate? Or are they completely unfounded? Why do we need to turn our phones off during a flight?

NASA did a study on this topic recently and could not find any incidents of planes crashing as a result of cell phone interference. Case closed, right? Not exactly. Though it's never been proven that cell phones can crash a plane, some people still believe it is possible. This includes some pilots. Also, some pilots will tell you that cell phones do cause interference, just not of the deadly kind. I once spoke to a pilot and he said that he could often hear cell phone conversations coming across his radio. You talk on your phone on a plane, and the conversation could get transmitted onto the same frequency that airline is using. So while your phone isn't causing any mechanical problems, the pilot could be hearing your voice while he's trying to navigate the skies. I'm not pilot, but I imagine it must be tougher to fly a plane when you're listening to two people talk about their children's soccer game, or discuss the latest Powerpoint presentation. It's an added distraction in an already difficult job.

There are other more obvious reasons that airlines want you to turn off your cell phone before takeoff. One is so that you'll pay attention to the potentially life-saving instructions given out by the flight attendants. Sure, the odds that you'll need to use that inflatable life vest are slim, but that doesn't mean the pilot wants you chatting while the flight attendant is showing you how it works.

Another reason is that you're probably annoying. Don't take offense; most people are annoying when they're on their cell phones. When you're in such close proximity with others as you would be on a plane, there's no real way to talk on your cell phone respectfully. It's not like your call is an emergency, and even if it is, what can you do about it? You can't ask the plane to hurry up or turn around. So if you're annoying, and you don't need to be on the phone, airlines prefer that you aren't. People want to relax on a plane, they don't want to hear your Cellular One ringtones going off every ten minutes.

Finally, although there's no evidence that cell phones cause crashes, there's also no definitive evidence that they're totally safe. The airline industry is already unsafe enough, so why add another risk?

Nokia And Sony Ericsson Go To War! - Who Will Win In 2008?

Join me as I take a look at the battle that's brewing between the heavyweight in the mobile world: Nokia and Sony Ericsson, both of whom want you to buy THEIR mobile phones!

Nokia - Going Tubin'

A lot of hopes are pinned on a brand new Nokia phone that's due out soon, the Tube. It's significant, because it's going to be Nokia first EVER full touchscreen mobile phone. Yep, they plan to take on the iPhone with it! To that end, they've been in development on a brand new version of their Symbian-based operating system, called S60 Touch. It is said to boast full touch control, massive 3+ inch screen, a VERY high spec camera, and all the usual Nokia user-friendliness.

However, recent shots of it, and test users' opinions have said it's not THAT nice to use. And whilst it may aim at the same touch control mechanism as the iPhone, it seems somehow clunkier, according to reports; the Nokia Tube's just not as smooth, or as fluid as its rival from Apple.

Sony Ericsson - power users of the world rejoice

So, if the Tube is going to be a bit of a let-down, what have Sony Ericsson got up their sleeves? Well, it seems they have a quadruple-header of REALLY high-end mobile phones coming up. First up is a Cyber-Shot camera phone known only by its codename of 'Shiho'. It's not been confirmed exactly what spec it will have, but if the rumours are to be believed, it will have AT LEAST a 7.2 megapixel camera, with 3x optical zoom. Combine that with the Cyber-Shot gubbins, and it will make for one awesome camera phone. If Sony Ericsson are going to rule the camera world with the Shiho, then they aim to rule the music world with their new really, really high end Walkman phone, so secret that we don't even know its new codename. All we know is that it was called 'Maria', and was based on a totally new version of Symbian UIQ, making it a proper iPhone-Killer. We don't know exactly how powerful it will be, but one thing's for sure; it will be powerful!

They pale in comparison, though, to Sony Ericsson's BIG pair of heavy-hitters. In the Windows Mobile world, and aiming to crack America, we have the stunning X1, an all-metal, super-powered mega-smart-phone. And then, alongside that, will be the mobile phone that the world and its dog is waiting for: the Sony Ericsson Paris, rumoured to be the upcoming P5. Whilst we don't know the full specs of this monster yet, we DO know it's UIQ-powered, with an incredibly-fast processor, 5 megapixel camera, sliding QWERTY keypad, built-in GPS, and an exclusive, metal body. Certainly cool enough to kick the Nokia Tube into a cocked hat. Not that it won't have competition, though, because rumored to be out this year is another newbie to the world of mobile phones: the new 3G iPhone.

Happy Birthday to You

These words you might have heard a many of times, and you are absolutely sure you will hear it again, and again, and again. Birthdays can be so simply explained. Break it into two words, and you get: "Birth" and "day", which means your birth day, the day you were given birth to. This is probably the most famous celebration ever, and I bet you a fortune (just kidding) it is celebrated everywhere in the world, whether it may be an expensive celebration, with a king-sized chocolate cake and a hundred and thirty-three guests, to a celebration that even the person in the next room would not know that it was existing. Whatever celebration, it is celebrated.

Birthdays make the person who was born on that day feel special, and make him/her feel as if he/she is really needed on Earth, and not to go anywhere, (ha ha ha), and not to make him/her feel left out and lonely and stuff.

Birthdays are celebrated with cake, balloons and gifts and Greeting cards. Relatives and the entire family gather together and congratulate the birthday boy/girl man/woman for being able to live all those glorious years, and they thank God for being so generous as to let the person's life continue so gracefully and wonderfully, and not getting the person into any kind of...trouble, or something like that. So have a great life, and remember that this is the first and last one you are going to get, so enjoy it to your full.

How To Never Run Out Of Money Again

I finally discovered the secrets they don't reveal in business schools or accountancy training...

As a professionally qualified accountant, I have over 16 years' experience in business accountancy and financial management, for businesses both large and small. In my training I've been taught to see sales as sales, costs as costs and profits as the bit left in between.

But I came across a startlingly simple new business concept recently which kicked that old-school idea firmly into touch, and helped me view my business in a whole new light.

The idea is so neat and simple that many people will likely walk on by without giving it a second thought.

It's based on that stalwart of small businesses, Guerrilla Marketing. In fact, the concept has been fully endorsed by the Master Guerrilla Jay Conrad Levinson himself.

But, whereas Guerrilla Marketing has been focussed on low-cost and best of all no-cost marketing, this new idea takes that a whole quantum leap further. It suggests there's something even better than free.

"What could be better than free?" I hear you ask.

Well, getting paid of course!

So the premise is this. Find ways to turn your marketing expenses into profit centres. Find ways to get paid for your marketing.

Now this may sound too good to be true. But there are a number of businesses in a variety of different industries - from Las Vegas casinos to Washington publishers, and more - already putting this into practice. With massive success.

So what ways can you start to use this idea in your own business?

Well, I would suggest you start by looking at your marketing expenses. Is there any marketing collateral you're currently giving away to prospects for free? Can you turn that into a low-priced information product and sell it instead? This product can still be used as a sales letter, but it may be disguised as a report or small booklet or magazine. And whereas before your freebie would be given out to all and sundry, and cost you more to follow-up on, this product gets sold only to qualified prospects, who have now become customers. And that will dramatically increase the effectiveness of any follow-up actions you need to take. Now that's powerful.

And as for your other business expenses, try listing them out, one by one, and brainstorm around each. What innovative ways can you think of to turn these expenses into revenue-generators? Can you package and sell this expense as a product or service to another person, organisation or company?

One example I'm exploring in my own online information business is providing low-cost but ongoing services to local art groups, which not only defrays the costs of my own online technical expenditure, but turns it into an income earner too.

Think creatively.

Think imaginatively.

Think how your waste output can be someone else's low-cost input, and an additional profit stream for you. Or turn that on its head and think of how someone else's waste can become your own low-cost, or no-cost, input.

There are so many ways this idea can help those of us in small business, with minimal resources. And that's especially true with a potential recession on the horizon.

With this new Guerrilla idea, I no longer see that Dollar or Pound or Euro sign as cost and cash outflow, but instead see % signs and rates of return. I've learnt how to look at my business expenses, not as liabilities but as opportunities. Opportunities for yet more profit coming in, yet more ways to add value and accrue revenue.

Before that, I struggled to see how I was going to afford those expensive one-off business costs: attending an important marketing seminar or setting up a stall at a key industry show. And I was having to restrict my marketing activities to those I could (just about) afford.

There was never enough money to do what I wanted or even needed to do. And I'm trying to get by on the smallest budget here. Trying to do things Guerrilla-style: getting more from less, using free marketing tools wherever I can.

But since reading about the Guerrilla Balance Sheet, I'm armed with dozens of exciting new ways to make my business costs pay their way and, better yet, earn me additional profits on top. Now I don't need to pay to do my marketing, because I can get paid to do it instead.

And I never have to worry about running out of money again.

What could be better than that?

Driving a Rolls Royce Phantom

You may have heard of that infamous saying, "He who dies with the most toys wins," well, my toy list just expanded after driving the Rolls Royce Phantom.

I am making room for a very special toy, a toy that celebrated 2 special events recently, the 100 Year Anniversary of Rolls-Royce and the 1,000th custom built Rolls-Royce Phantom made in Goodwood, England. I had the distinct pleasure to get behind the wheel of a Rolls-Royce Phantom that carries a lineage of the Rolls-Royce "Silver Ghost", which founder Frederick Henry Royce called "the best car he ever made" and became know as "the best car in the world." With breeding like this, and 80 years of craftsmanship, the expectations were high.

Two experts on the Phantom, Bob Austin and Terrence Easton of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars NA, LLC, walked me through the many features of this magnificent automobile. The Rolls-Royce Phantom was on display by Miller Motor Cars of Greenwich, along with many other exquisite products at the Robb Report magazine's "Luxury on Greenwich Harbor" in Greenwich, Connecticut, United States.

The technology in this car is found under the hood and not splattered across the dashboard. The instrumentation is simple and no nonsense. You are not encumbered with dials, and fancy read-outs; though you are surrounded by craftsmanship that is second to none. The interior is one area that the owner can put his or her signature on by selecting from a broad array of colors, materials, such as cashmere and leather, wood and wood inlays, and on and on; in truth, however, the options list is virtually as long as an owner's imagination.

The Phantom for its size is extraordinary, with a top speed of 130 mph it can accelerate 0-60 mph in 5.7 second, and 0-100 mph in a mere 5.9 seconds. Under the hood it boosts a 6.75-litre V12, with maximum power of 453 hp, so don't worry about running a bit late to the theatre.

So, do you wonder what it is like behind the wheel of a Rolls-Royce Phantom? I was in a state of euphoria piloting the automobile through some of the back areas of Greenwich; where a sweeping back road turned into a slight bend, where entering a long highway entrance ramp became a short merge, and other highway traffic became oblivious to me. Pressing the accelerator of the Phantom was like pushing your foot through the wind, you expect a forceful push from the engine, but not in the Phantom, where the engine produces all that extraordinary power, but it is smooth, quiet with little to no engine push. The ride was so smooth that I had to keep glancing at the speedometer to make sure I was abiding by the law and driving at the appropriate speed, though the temptation to check out the top speed did cross my mind. Tooling around in a Rolls-Royce Phantom was the highlight of my day at the Robb Report event, which also happened to be my birthday. Being a winner, I am baffled though on how do I get the Phantom off my toy list, and into my hands?

Allama Muhammad Iqbal

Brief Life Sketch of Allama Muhammad Iqbal

Muhammad Iqbal (1877-1938) is one of the preeminent writers of the Indo-Pakistan subcontinent. Indeed, the attention he has received from numerous writers, translators, and critics from Western as well as Islamic countries testifies to his stature as a world literary figure. While his primary reputation is that of a poet, Iqbal has not lacked admirers for his philosophical thought. He has in fact been called “the most serious Muslim philosophical thinker of modem times.” The frequently used appellation of “poet-philosopher” is thus well deserved. The hyphen in the phrase is all-important: Iqbal’s poetry and philosophy do not exist in isolation from each other; they are integrally related, his poetry serving as a vehicle for his thought. Iqbal wrote poetry in Urdu and Persian, and several collections in each language exist. In the following page a life-sketch of Iqbal is followed by a brief treatment of some of the major themes and literary features of his poetry.

Allama Muhammad Iqbal

*****

Iqbal was born in Sialkot, in the present-day province of the Punjab in Pakistan, in 1877. He received his early education in that city, where one of his teachers was Mir Hasan, an accomplished scholar who commanded a knowledge of several Islamic languages. Mir Hasan gave Iqbal a thorough training in the rich Islamic literary tradition. His influence on Iqbal was formative. Many years later (1922), when the English governor of the Punjab proposed to the British Crown that Iqbal be knighted in acknowledgment of his literary accomplishments, Iqbal asked that Mir Hasan also be awarded a title. To the governor’s remark that Mir Hasan had not authored any books, Iqbal responded that he, Iqbal, was the book Mir Hasan had produced. Mir Hasan received the title of Shams al-’Ulama’ (“Sun of Scholars”).

For higher education Iqbal went to Lahore (1895), where he enrolled in Government College, getting, in 1899, an MA in philosophy; he had already obtained a degree in law (1898). In Lahore, a major center of academic and literary activity, Iqbal soon made a name for himself as a poet. One of the teachers of Government College Iqbal admired most was Sir Thomas Arnold. Arnold, too, had great affection for Iqbal, he helped Iqbal in his career as a teacher and also encouraged him to undertake several research projects. When Arnold returned to England in 1904, Iqbal wrote a touching poem in which he expressed his resolve to follow Arnold to England. The very next year, in fact, Iqbal left for study at Cambridge. His choice of Cambridge was probably dictated by the fact that Cambridge was reputed for the study not only of European philosophy but also of Arabic and Persian. In his three years of stay abroad, Iqbal obtained a BA from Cambridge (1906), qualified as a barrister at London’s Middle Temple (1906), and earned a PhD from Munich University (1908).

Allama Muhammad Iqbal

After returning to Lahore in 1908, Iqbal taught philosophy at Government College for a few years. In 1911 he resigned from government service and set up legal practice. Meanwhile he continued to write poetry in Urdu and Persian, Asrar-i Khudi (Persian) was published in 1915. Translated into English as The Secrets of the Self (1920) by Professor Reynold Nicholson of Cambridge, the book introduced Iqbal to the West. Asrar-i Khudi was followed by several other volumes: Rumuz-i Bikhudi (1918), Payam-i Mashriq (1923), Bang-i Dara (1924), Zabur-i ‘Ajam (1927), Javid Namah (1932), Musafir (1936), Zarb-i Kalim (1937), and Armaghan-i Hijaz (1938, posthumously). Iqbal wrote prose also. His doctoral thesis, The Development of Metaphysics in Persia, was published in 1908, and his Reconstruction of Religious Thought in Islam (with a 7th chapter added to the original set of six lectures, first published in 1930), in 1934. Many of Iqbal’s poetical works have been rendered into foreign languages, including English, German, Italian, Russian, Czechoslovakian, Arabic, and Turkish. His works have also spawned a vast amount of critical literature in many languages.

Although his main interests were scholarly, Iqbal was not unconcerned with the political situation of the, country and the political fortunes of the Muslim community of India. Already in 1908, while in England, he had been chosen as a member of the executive council of the newly established British branch of the Indian Muslim League. In 1931 and 1932 he represented the Muslims of India in the Round Table Conferences held in England to discuss the issue of the political future of India. And in a 1930 lecture Iqbal suggested the creation of a separate homeland for the Muslims of India. Iqbal died (1938) before the creation of Pakistan (1947), but it was his teaching that “spiritually ... has been the chief force behind the creation of Pakistan.” He is the national poet of Pakistan.

Allama Muhammad Iqbal

II

A detailed discussion of the thematic and literary features of Iqbal’s poetry is not be undertaken here. A few general points may, however, be made.

A reader of Iqbal’s poetry is struck by its sheer thematic variety. Iqbal was deeply interested in the issues that have exercised the best minds of the human race—the issues of the meaning of life, change and constancy, freedom and determinism, survival and progress, the relation between the body and the soul, the conflict between reason and emotion, evil and suffering, the position and role of human beings in the universe—and in his poetry he deals with these and other issues. He had also read widely in history, philosophy, literature, mysticism, and politics, and, again, his catholic interests are reflected in his poetry.

Iqbal celebrates humanity, in more than one sense. On one level he shows broad acceptance for humanity. In “The Story of Adam”, the protagonist, Adam, plays a variety of roles-those of prophet, thinker, reformer, scientist, inventor, astronomer, martyr, and iconoclast. Adam in this poem is not simply a religious figure belonging to a certain tradition, but represents the whole of humankind. On another level, Iqbal takes pride in being human and has no desire to partake of the godhead of God. To be God is to have concerns and worries that would give one a headache, but to be human is to have that sweet pain called heartache. Humans can hold their heads high in view of their achievements in the world to which they were banished from paradise: if God has made the night, then humans have made the lamp, and if God has made deserts and mountains, then humans have made parks and meadows (“A Dialogue Between God and Man,”). Humans must, therefore, strive to be perfect qua humans, and that is a goal yet to be achieved.

The theme of humanity is closely linked in Iqbal with that of khudi (literally, “selfhood”). Khudi is a complex thought in Iqbal. Broadly speaking, it represents the principle of the inner self with an urge to manifest itself Societies as well as individuals have khudi, and it is on the development or suppression of one’s or failure in the world depends, khudi that one’s success the khudi of slaves, for example, is moribund.

Recognition, discovery, cultivation, and assertion of their khudi should, therefore, be the aim of humans. Iqbal’s critique of Muslim societies is predicated on the assumption that these societies have lost their khudi or have allowed it to become seriously impaired. The best way to understand Iqbal’s concept of khudi is by reading poems in which he discusses the subject.

Perfection, or rather limitless perfection, is a frequently occurring motif in Iqbal’s poetry. “I seek the end of that which has no end,” says Iqbal in “The Houri and the Poet”, and, in the same poem: “From the spark I seek a star, from the star a sun.” Iqbal sees no end to human potentialities. He wishes humans to embark on a never-ending journey of discovery, and to this end emphasizes the importance of action. Constant action and perpetual movement are in fact the only guarantee of survival in the world. Nations fall behind when they cease to be dynamic and start preferring a life of idle speculation over one of purposive action.

But the quest for perfection can give rise to irony. Irony, in fact, fills human life, for while they have been imbued with the desire to achieve perfection, humans have been denied the ability to achieve it in practice. The poems “Man”, “Solitude”, and “The Dew and the Stars” discuss several aspects of the irony of human life. The poem, “The Story of Adam,” though it ends on a more optimistic note, yet implies that it takes humans a long time to discover the most important secret of existence.

“The heart has its reasons, of which reason is ignorant,” says Pascal. Iqbal, who frequently speaks of the conflict of the head and the heart, would agree, though he would add that while the conflict exists, it does not have to. More often than not it is reason (or the intellect) that belittles the heart (or intuition), but both are essential to a harmonious life; ideally, then, reason and the heart should cooperate rather than clash.

Although he has wide-ranging interests, Iqbal essentially belongs to, and speaks from within, the Islamic tradition, employing, for his purposes, the historical, religious, philosophical, and literary resources of that tradition. A full appreciation of Iqbal requires an understanding of these resources, and the notes and commentaries in this volume elucidate Iqbal’s use of them.

Allama Muhammad Iqbal

Iqbal held to the doctrine of art for life’s sake. Acutely aware of the problems of Muslim decadence and backwardness, Iqbal takes it upon himself to shake the Muslims of India and other countries out of their lethargy, urging them to take the path of progress, so that they can gain an honorable position in the polity of nations, He uses the medium of poetry to arouse socio-religious consciousness among Muslims. As a result, Islamic religious and social themes predominate in his poetry. But Iqbal’s vision of a revived religion is far from conservative. He is sharply critical of many of the institutions of historic Islam (of the institution of monarchy, for example), and his vision of a new world derives from the Islamic notions of egalitarianism and social justice. He rejects dogmatism in religion, advocates rethinking of the Islamic intellectual heritage, and stands for the establishment of a forward-looking community. But the conviction of art for life’s sake never allows Iqbal’s poetry to degenerate into bland or crass propaganda. The worldwide acclamation he has won is proof that Iqbal’s strength consists in writing purpose poetry of the highest artistic standards.

Ultimately, however, the secret of the appeal of Iqbal’s poetry lies in the personality behind that poetry. Whether he is dealing with a broadly humanistic or a specifically Islamic theme, Iqbal views it from a unique perspective. Consider his boldly critical attitude toward certain aspects of the received tradition, an attitude reflected, for example, in the poems referred above. Unlike almost any other poet in the Islamic tradition, Iqbal enters into a dialogue with God, raising issues the orthodox would consider disturbing. He asks whether Adam’s expulsion from heaven has turned out to be Adam’s loss or God’s own; he challenges God to speak to him face to face rather than through messengers, and, noting the discrepancy between the boundlessness of human ambition and the limitedness of the resources put at humans’ disposal, he asks God whether His experiment involving Adam is to be taken seriously. Iqbal’s view of the role of Satan in the world is also highly intriguing and, as one would expect, highly unconventional (see “Conquest of Nature” and “Gabriel and Iblis”).

A notable thing about Iqbal’s perspective is ambiguity, a typical modem quality. Especially when he is talking about metaphysical issues, Iqbal raises some difficult questions, without providing a single “valid” answer. In “Paradise Lost and Regained” the question whether Adam should have sinned or not (each scenario being theoretically defensible) is not answered by Iqbal. In “Gabriel and Iblis” we are left to wonder about Iqbal’s own view of Iblis’ self-justification. And in “Solitude” we cannot be certain why God smiles.

In several places Iqbal talks about himself about his Eastern background and Western education, and the contradictions of his own personality; his conviction that his study of historic Islam had furnished him with certain valuable insights which he must share with his people; his hope that his message will spread across the Muslim world, and his apprehension that he will be misunderstood or appreciated for the wrong reasons. Here it may be added that the various attempts made to identify (or label) Iqbal as a Sufi or an orthodox Muslim, as a radical or a reactionary are wide of the mark because Iqbal is too large a figure to fit any narrow, procrustean category; he demands and deserves attention on his own terms.

Allama Muhammad Iqbal

III

Iqbal had a fine sense of the dramatic, and in his poetry he frequently employs dramatic techniques. Many of his poems are structured like a play, with the first half of the poem building a tension or conflict that is resolved, or raising a question that is answered, in the second half Examples are “Gabriel and Iblis”, “The Dew and the Stars”, “The Houri and the Poet” and “Fatimah bint ‘Abdullah”. Many poems are dialogues, with well-argued positions taken by the interlocutors (“A Dialogue Between God and Man”, “The Dew and the Stars”, “Reason and Heart” and “A Dialogue Between Knowledge and Love”; also the fables). Some poems are one-sided dialogues or monologues (“Give Me Another Adversary”, “The Falcon’s Advice to Its Youngster”). Again, Iqbal carefully weaves the “plot” of a poem, arousing the reader’s curiosity, dropping seemingly casual hints that turn out to be prophetic, providing flashback, and saving his masterstroke for the end. Two excellent examples are “The Night and the Poet” and “The Houri and the Poet”.

Allama Muhammad Iqbal

Iqbal has some favorite images and motifs. The eagle is Iqbal’s favorite bird, and the tulip his favorite flower. We will here say a few words about the tulip. The tulip is a pretty flower, but, when it grows in the desert (Lala’-i sahra’), it combines strength with beauty, for it then represents the assertion of one’s self (khudi) in the face of hostile circumstances. The tulip owes its splendor not to an outside source but to the “scar” inside its heart, its glow being indigenous to it, as befits a flower with a khudi of its own. The tulip is thus a “model” for individuals and nations to follow. In one of his quatrains (“Freedom and Determinism and Philosophy of History”), speaking of the difficult circumstances that alone give birth to new nations, Iqbal says: “From mountains and deserts do nations arise.” Although Iqbal does not mention the tulip in this quatrain, it would not be far-fetched to suggest that, conceptually, Iqbal here has the desert tulip in mind. The cup-shaped flower suggests to Iqbal’s mind several analogies, and in one piece (“Locke, Kant, and Bergson,”) Iqbal, makes consistent use of the tulip image to describe and analyze complex philosophical ideas. It is in view of the deep significance of the flower in Iqbal’s poetry that I have chosen Tulip in the Desert as the title of my volume of translations (Mustansir Mir, Tulip in the Desert, Hurst and Company, London, 2000). The images of the eagle and the tulip illustrate how Iqbal adds to the native literary tradition or makes an innovative use of that tradition (the tulip). Another example in this connection is that of the moth. In Persian and Urdu poetry the moth represents the devoted and self-immolating lover. Like the moth, which keeps circling the light, the lover (a male) desires to stay close to the beloved (a female). But in Iqbal, typically, the moth often represent a reprehensible rather than a praiseworthy quality: the shining light it is in love with is not its own. The moth is to be contrasted with another, the firefly, which, though it has a weak light, can at least call this light its own. The firefly, in other words, is possessed of khudi, but the moth has no khudi. Iqbal often uses a series of images to convey a thought, producing a cumulative effect. In “Fatimah bint -Abdullah,” for example, he uses no fewer than four images to express the idea that, even in its present age of decadence, the Muslim Community can produce individuals of exceptional caliber:

O that our autumn-stricken garden had

A flower-bud like this!

O that in our ashes would be found, O Lord,

A spark like this!

In our desert is hidden many a deer still.

In the spent clouds lies dormant still

Many a flash of lightning.

Iqbal is capable of writing biting satire. Two examples are: “Give Me Another Adversary”, in which Satan argues that he deserves a better rival than Adam, and “Scorpion Land,” which criticizes slave mentality. (Mustansir Mir)

Dating Tips for Shy Guys - How To Start A Conversation

Want to know some great dating tips for shy guys? If so then great you've came to the right place. For this article I'm going to focus on the biggest problem most shy guys have and that's starting a conversation with a woman.

When you go up to a woman to start a conversation this is known as opening or using an opener. In it's simplest terms it just means you're saying something to get her attention and to start a conversation. There are two ways that you can open. The most common way most men open is to use a direct opener something to effect of saying to a woman "You're so cute" or complementing her on her appearance in some way. While this may work some of the time using this method telegraphs right way that you are interested sexually in her, which may scare her off. The method I recommend using is an indirect opener. The best indirect openers telegraph no interest and ask an opened ended question (Meaning the woman can't simply answer yes or no) and allow you to tell a interesting story.

A perfect example of a indirect opener is an Opinion Opener. Here is an example of an opinion opener. "Hey can I get your opinion on something? Do you think it's weird if guys wear eye liner?" The woman will then give her opinion then you can go into an interesting story explaining why you asked the question. From the example above you could say "Well I was wearing eye liner out the other night and I had so many women coming up to me saying how sexy my eyes were, but all my guy friends thought it was weird." This opener will work great because it telegraphs no interest and your story gives you high social status by describing how you were surrounded by women all night long telling you how sexy you are.

There you go one of the best dating tips for shy guys, use an opinion opener to start a conversation. You can make up your own opinion openers with real stories from your own life and they'll work great! The most important thing to remember is that your opinion openers telegraph no interest and that they ask an open ended question. Once you've opened then you can start the attraction process and that's where the fun really begins.

6 Cheap Date Ideas

Tired of the same old "dinner and a movie" dates? It's nice once in a while, but it can get old sometimes, and very expensive too. I've never had much money, so I've had to be very creative when it comes to dates over the years. Here are my top six cheap date ideas.

6. A walk in the park. No matter where you live, there's bound to somewhere close by that has a walking path or trail. Set aside a few hours and go for walk together. Talk to each other about whatever you like (stay away from stressful topics such as work, money, etc.). You can even bring a picnic lunch and a blanket, if you like.

5. Free concerts. Many communities host free concerts frequently, from classical music, to rock, folk, and country. Some even have plays and musicals performed by local students or amateur actors. Most of these are free, and may be combined with idea #6 for an extended date.

4. Sunday drive. You don't have to do this on Sunday, of course, but the idea is the same. One day, when the weather is nice, go out for a drive down some old back-country roads, with no real destination in mind. You listen to music, talk to each other, or ride in silence, enjoying the beauty as it passes by.

3. Museums. There are museums for many things other than just fine art, and there are probably some right in your home town. Historical museums (a personal favorite) are very common, especially in small towns and communities. And the best part is, many of them are free.

2. Go dancing. Whether it's rock, hip-hop, line dancing, square dancing, ballroom dancing, salsa, or any other kind of dancing, dancing is a lot of fun, and won't break the bank. Dancing is fun, and it gets the blood flowing, releasing endorphins into your brain, making you feel good. It also forces intimacy, which often leads to more fun later. You don't know how to dance? Few people actually do. It's really just moving your body to the rhythm of the music. But, if you insist, you can take dance classes together, which can also be a lot of fun. Many community organizations offer free dance classes, especially for beginners.

1. A day in bed. Call in sick. Have you partner call in sick. Don't get yourself fired from your job or anything. Use vacation time if you have to. Turn off your cell phone, pager, etc. Rent a movie with some hot love scenes in it, or rent an adult movie even. Watch the movie, and re-enact the scenes in the movie. Spending all day in bed with your partner is a lot of fun, and really forces the two of you to connect on many levels.

These are just a few suggestions from someone who rarely goes on extravagant dates. Sometimes, the creative, cheaper dates can be the most fun, so get creative, and go have some fun with your partner.

Flash Memory Cards - What They Are, And What They Do

Digital Cameras, Printers, Laptops, MP3 Players, and mobile phones all have one thing in common, a memory card. The flash-based technology allows the user to hot swap the card between many different devices. These cards are nonvolatile therefore retaining there memory/data when removed from a source of electricity. Memory cards can easily be replaced, formatted, and re-used.

What does this mean to you as a consumer? You have to consider various factors before purchasing. Some of these factors are: price, compatibility, and capacity. Depending on your device your choices may be limited as some devices only allow certain types of memory card, and sometimes even a limit on the capacity.

In today's article, I will talk about some of the major memory cards. As technology advances, these cards grow smaller physically but larger in capacity.

Secure Digital Card (SD)

The most popular of them all, the SD card. These cards fit into most mobile phones, handheld electronics and digital cameras

  • First use in 1999 (I am not sure about this. Please email/comment if you have the right year)

  • Capacity ranges between 8 MB to 4 GB.

  • 32mm x 24mm x 2.1mm

A smaller card called MiniSD was developed to help the cell phone industry as a means of storage. These cards provide the same functionality and benefits of the normal sized one. The company went on ahead to make even a smaller card called the MicroSD which is roughly 1/4 of the size of the normal SD card. Like I said before, as technology grows larger, these cards grow smaller.

MultiMedia Card (MMC)

These cards are just basically a replacement for SD cards. They fit into most SD card readers and supports a maximum speed of 2.5MB/second. This card was developed by SanDisk and Siemens in 1997.

xD Picture Card

The extreme digital card is mostly used in digital cameras. These cards are designed to store high number of images with the least data corruption. The two big companies that support these cards in there cameras are Olympus and FujiFilm

  • Developed by FujiFilm and Olympus

  • 20mm x 25mm x 1.7mm

Compact Flash Card

The CF card is the only card that can operate at two voltages. This allows the card to be hot swapped with many different devices that support it without the risk of data loss or card damage. CF cards ship as two types, Type I and Type II. Both types have different range of capacity.. The card was designed based on the PCMCIA PC Card standard and can fit into a PCMCIA slot with an adapter.

  • Type I: 42.8mm x 36.4mm x 3.3mm

  • Type II: 42.8mm x 36.4mm x 5.5mm

Sony Memory Sticks

You guessed it, developed by Sony to be used in Sony products, though some high end cameras and camcorders may use it because of its high speed. The speed of these cards make them the winner over others in the speed category. These cards are primarily used in Sony digital cameras, and Sony PSP (or other Memory Stick PRO compatible device).

  • Memory Stick Micro (M2): 15 mm x 12.5 mm x 1.2 mm

  • Memory Stick PRO: 50 mm x 21.5 mm x 2.8 mm. The Memory Stick PRO format has an an 8-bit parallel interface with theoretical transfer rates up to 480Mb/s. It is commonly used in high megapixel digital cameras and digital camcorders.

  • Memory Stick PRO DUO: 31 mm x 20 mm x 1.6 mm. The Memory Stick PRO Duo media is about one-third the volume and half the weight of standard-size media, but offers all the advanced functions of Memory Stick PRO media.

General Information:

Like all technology these cards will break. Because of the way a card inserts, the sockets are the most damaged rendering the card useless. It is said that any memory card can only withstand about 10,000 insertions. Physically they are quite sturdy, and are able to withstand heat. Please don't put the card in a heater, drop it or bend it as it will snap. A memory card is capable of reading/writing/executing over a million cycles.

When transferring information on to a memory card please do not remove it half way through, or shake it excessively. Ejecting it, or shaking it may cause the card to lose data, or even worse damage the card itself. These cards are not overly expensive, but there not cheap either so please take care of it.

Lastly, I feel like I must mention this.

Each memory card has a different slot size making them all unique. In a device theres only one memory card that will fit into a given slot. It will also fit in ONE way so if you can't get it in the first time, please refer to your manual and check if you have the correct memory card.

How Can I Banish Bad Breath - Get Rid Of The Nasty Smell

Anyone who suffers from this problem understands how humiliating it can be. Your confidence level seems to take a dip because you lose some of your self esteem when people walk away from you or even tell you about your problem. This article is geared towards providing you with some valuable information; if you have constantly asked yourself the question "how can i banish bad breath" Then you will receive some useful tips here.

1. Halitosis is caused by decayed food particles between your teeth and at the gum line. The bacteria that is in your mouth is cause of the smelly odor that comes from your mouth; which is especially more noticeable in the morning. To help get rid of your bad breath you should begin brushing your teeth at least twice a day and if possible after each and every meal. You should also make it a daily habit to floss every night before you go to sleep. This will actually help prevent the bacteria from accumulating during the night.

2. Stay away from foods that can cause your breath to smell. Foods like fish, onions, coffee and caffeinated beverages can cause an odor in your mouth. Begin eating foods that can help your breath smell better like parsley, cilantro and ginger; eat these foods raw.

3. Keep your mouth from becoming dry by drinking more water. Bacteria will grow more easily in your mouth if you do not keep it moist. Begin by drinking two liters of water a day which can help clean out the bodies toxins. Drinking more water will keep your mouth moist and will help wash out the food particles that are left in your mouth and between your teeth.

4. Cleanse your colon on a regular basis; this will help banish bad breath. Whether you choose to believe it your colon can be responsible for your bad breath, it is tied directly to your mouth; and if your colon is filthy your breath will see the effects of it. You can easily begin cleansing your colon by eating more bran or using a herbal laxative. Before you purchase a laxative to use; you should visit your family doctor to see what he recommends.

5. Visit your dentist on a regular basis; this alone can prevent this problem. By visiting your dentist and doing all the preventative work this can help reduce any problems like bad breath, cavities or anything else that may be a problem.

By taking proper oral hygiene care you can begin to gain your confidence back. You will begin to notice that people will be able to stand around you without pulling away from you. If you do not think you have bad breath all you have to do is lick the back of your hand and smell it; that will let you know what others are smelling when you talk to them. Sleep - Too Little Or Too Much Is Bad For Health

So how much sleep is "enough"?

It's a topic bound to stimulate a heated discussion amongst sleep experts, let alone any group of people that is bound to include a) someone who swears they are just fine with four hours a night and b) the Rip Van Winkles who can't function on less than 10 hours of shut eye.

The latest research suggests BOTH these extremes might have a problem - too little or too much sleep could be bad for your health and your chances of living a long life.

So who are the light sleepers? Well, in our own time Madonna, Jay Leno and Donald Trump reportedly do very nicely with four hours a night, continuing a long tradition established by the likes of inventor Thomas Edison and legendary British prime minister Winston Churchill.

However - and it's a big however - Edison and Churchill admitted to needing a lengthy daytime nap. Who knows, maybe Madonna naps in the recording studio between takes!

At the other extreme, renowned scientist Albert Einstein who claimed to need AT LEAST 10 hours sleep a night!

While "eight hours a night" has long been the so-called ideal sleep, medical research suggests seven hours may be the new benchmark. Studies in various countries conclude that people who sleep too little (less than six hours a night), or too much (more than eight hours) live shorter lives than those in between.

Now, the thought of getting just four or five hours decent rest a night is just a dream to many people suffering the misery of insomnia, let alone eight hours. And millions seem to function well with five or six hours. Indeed, it's important not to get hung up on quantity of sleep, but the all-important quality of sleep experienced.

That said, an intriguing six-year study from obesity researchers at Laval University in Quebec City, Canada found that people who sleep five to six hours a night and those who slumber for nine or 10 hours gain more weight than those sleeping for seven to eight hours. The researchers monitored 276 adults aged 21 to 64.

Interesting huh?

"Everything that we've seen in the last few years regarding this issue says yes, if you're getting seven to eight hours of sleep at night, you have the best chance of not gaining weight and maintaining your own weight," said Donna Arand, an experimental psychologist with the Sleep Disorders Center at Kettering Hospital in Dayton, Ohio.

"And if you're getting a lot less than that or a lot more than that, you're hurting yourself and it's going to be an uphill battle."

Exactly why the short and long sleepers gained weight isn't known, but the researchers believe that sleep deprivation disrupts production of hormones that regulate appetite. Sleep too little and the body produces more of the "hunger hormone" that makes you want to eat.. Sleep too much? Scientists believe you're actually not getting quality sleep - that's why you stay in bed so long. The effect is the same - your body produces too much of the hunger hormone.

Forgive the pun, but the study adds weight to the importance of overcoming sleep problems so you're getting proper rest every night. And that, as I point out in my self-help guide Banish Insomnia, requires a complete change of lifestyle.

Reduce your stress, exercise and eat a balanced diet and you've begun the journey to restful sleep every night.

Bodybuilding Facts - Before and After Photo's - The Truth

Have you ever seen the site's with the amazing photos of the complete body transformation? Of course you have. Believe it or not, 99% of them are true and legitimate before and after photos. And the transformations are amazing indeed. Here is what they don't show you.

Muscle building and fat loss goals are things to be taken seriously. They can be the literal difference between life and death for some people. The decision to change one's physical appearance is a huge one, something to not be taken lightly. It is life changing to go from an overweight out of shape person to a fit, lean, well built specimen. Every aspect of your life improves, from the obvious physical changes to the less obvious boost in self confidence and elevated feeling of self worth. And the even less obvious way in which every one around you treats you, especially the people who don't know you and make their initial judgments on how you look and carry yourself.

The person that makes the decision to "change" is like anyone would be, looking for the easiest and fastest route to their desired destination. So it's obvious that ads and programs will promote how easy and fast you can go from this to that. And a picture is worth a 1000 words. Actually, two pictures. The before and after.

I said before that 99% of theses shots are legit, and they are. And the photo's are not doctored or altered, in most cases. It is the same person's head on their body in both shots. But if you look at any of these very closely, you will notice that the people always look a little different, in the face especially. The hair will almost always be a different style, length and sometimes even color. Why? It is so you don't notice as easily what enabled the real "transformation" to occur.

The passage of a LOT OF TIME.

Not the 8 week, 30 day, 60 day, 12 week, ripped, cut, chiseled, huge, massive, muscle bound time frame they are promising. If you're 100 lbs overweight you can drop 30-40 fairly quickly. Or, if you've never lifted before, you can gain 5-10 lbs of muscle fairly easily. And you can do THAT in 8 weeks or so. But you will NOT go from 20% body fat to under 9% (where you MUST be for abs to show), or go from being a 90 lb weakling to a middle linebacker physique in 8 weeks. You also won't do it in 8 MONTHS, unless you quit your job, hire a trainer and a chef and happen to be 18-22 years old.

Anything that makes as much difference in your life as a "body transformation" will, will not come easy or quick. But it will be worth it. I just came back from 3 weeks in south Florida, hanging on the beaches everyday. I saw no "after" photos walking around. None at all. One of the major reasons for that is because people buy into the hype and when it doesn't happen as promised they quit, or they don't believe the hype and never get to know that it is possible to accomplish what they see in the photos, just not in 8 weeks. Simply realize that a lean well built body is about a life style. You don't change that overnight.

Women in Business - Interesting To Know

When analyzing the success of any business, factors to consider encompass more than just business growth and financial performance. Important aspects of thriving businesses include the core values of the organization, as well as the business culture and focus, which ultimately lead to the satisfaction of customers and other business stakeholders.

While many organizations address all of these business aspects, women entrepreneurs have the strongest grasp on success that is measured by more than just financial metrics. This is not to say that women-owned businesses aren't focused on financial results. In fact, according to the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO), "Women-owned businesses are as financially sound and creditworthy as the typical firm in the U.S. economy, and are more likely to remain in business than the average U.S. firm."

Women business owners in the Minneapolis/St Paul area provided some insight into commonalities that lead to their business accomplishments, including:

  • What inspires women to leave their corporate jobs

  • How women position their business versus competitors

  • Personal attitudes leading to their success

  • Factors building and maintaining a successful business

  • How women-owned businesses contribute to the economy

Leaving Corporate Life

"There are a lot of intelligent women who have dreams and passion, and they're realizing they don't have to climb the corporate ladder." - Joy Pecchia, Art of Joy Inc.

Most of the women we interviewed stated that they left their corporate positions to start their own business doing a job that built on the past experience. A key difference is that they could be more effective on their own, because they had fewer barriers. Mary Gorski of (MG Assessments) recalls her organizational development role in the corporate world. She saw that the company had to build a HR strategy to fill the needs of those within the organization. However, the path from recognizing a problem to executing a solution was neither straight nor swift. Gorski built her own business and reports today that she is better able to do what is right. There is no red tape, no board to address. When she sees a problem or opportunity, she can customize a solution without constraints. She reaches the solutions stage much more quickly than when she was with corporate.

Many women are driven by the desire to use their skills to assist others. Consequently, women actively participate in the service industry even more heavily than manufacturing businesses. Brenda Martinson of Serenity Now (www.serenity-now.com) feels that women fill a niche in this marketplace. "There are a lot of intelligent women who see a need and want to fill it." The passion to fill these needs is one of many qualities that make women natural entrepreneurs. Jessica Lorentz, owner of Epic Bodyworks, feels that women have natural tendency to want to take care of people and that their personalities allow them to build a rapport with their clients and earn their trust. Business is about relationships, and women have a knack for cultivating strong connections with others.

Making A Difference

"You have to position yourself as an expert with a track record." - Mary Gorski

Building a reputation not only comes from character and results, but by being an expert in the field. To achieve this, women in business place a lot of emphasis on education - educating their customers as well as themselves. Gorski spends a lot of time acting as an educator by giving presentations and creating a newsletter for her clients. Sometimes the businesses she is working with don't have a clear idea of what their own problems are. Educating her clients on problems and solutions in a clear and simple way allow them to implement her solutions on their own. Joy Pecchia, who does strategic consulting and coaching, includes speaking and training as part of her services. She takes educating her clients to another level by offering sailboat coaching - linking the life experience with making business decisions. Additionally, she writes articles to keep clients abreast of relevant information.

There are several ways these women further their personal development. In addition to utilizing a variety of traditional resources, such as publications, seminars, etc, and they activity participate in groups aimed at helping women in business. There are undoubtedly more groups geared towards helping women succeed than there are designed for men. The women interviewed also stay current with technology to make their business more productive for them and more convenient for their clients. According to Barbara Wilk of Ace Label Systems "Attracting talented technical and business personnel as the business grows can be easier through establish business and personal networks."

Being a business expert can generate new business, and educating clients shows that these women's top priorities are their customers. Two women who own massage therapy businesses note that keeping their clients informed of self care techniques is just as much their responsibility as addressing a client's present condition. By teaching clients about their field of expertise, women aim to make their clients self-sufficient. Clients may continue to utilize their services, but it is with progress and evolution rather than a stagnant, continuously urgent need for help.

The Right Attitude

"If you stay stagnant, your dreams will die." - Joy Pecchia

Continuing personal development can contribute to building a healthy reputation in the market, which can also lead to new business. Knowing how to drive growth based on the right attitude and motivation is a key attitude common to the women entrepreneurs. Pecchia notes that her business and success is not about her ego, but rather about coming from her heart to support what is best for her client. Gorski commented on how some business owners are try to prove themselves, which gets in the way of their success. She also says that people must be performance driven rather than let their ego get in the way. This bottom line is all about what is best for the client. The growth of each entrepreneur's business is not just for herself, but to better cater to each new client.

Anticipating what is best for the client is a theme that surfaces again and again with all the local interviewees. This is especially significant when discussing how these women gauge their success. Revenue and financial performance, an obvious answer, was not seen in the way that one might expect. One woman revealed that she didn't use financial metrics to measure her success as much as whether she enjoys what she is doing and does the best that she can. Even revenue growth was seen as how the business can positively impact more people. So rather than just focusing on a few key accounts, her business growth allows her to reach and influence more people. Making changes how clients benefit from their services was a major measure of success. Gorski says, "My client's success is an absolute correlation to my success." Referrals constitute a major portion of business for these women. As all of them said, if they're getting these referrals, they must be doing something right.

Foundation for Success

"As important as technical and financial expertise are to business success, entrepreneurs can underestimate the importance of the "soft issues" of business culture and collaboration." - Barbara Wilk

The right attitude and motivation can only be effective once a solid business structure is established. Strong business plans and financial forecasting were major components in the beginnings of the local entrepreneurs. Each of the women interviewed went into business with a clear identity and understanding of what they offer and how they offer it. Martinson commented on the importance of setting up correctly and advises any aspiring entrepreneur to do their research on how to set up and be prepared. Both Gorski and Lorentz add that you can develop technical skills along the way, but you have to have the passion to run your own business. Wilk says, "A small entrepreneurial business can have the best of both the responsiveness that typically comes with a smaller organization as well as the best-in-class processes of a larger organization."

A less tangible bit of the framework is the high level of enjoyment the interviewees have for their work. These women love what they do. Pecchia went so far as to call her business her "life's purpose," something so few people can say about their careers.

These attributes played a significant role in building a clientele. When asked about their methods of advertising, the majority of business owners stated that they utilized conventional methods like media and internet advertising, but these numbers didn't compare to the amount of business they received by networking.

Contributing to the Economy

"Every day, 420 women go out and start their own businesses--twice the rate at which men do so. And these businesses are growing revenue, profits and jobs faster than business as a whole." -Margaret Heffernan, "Are Women Better Entrepreneurs?" Forbes.com

The nature of many women-owned businesses is to help other individuals
