Seven Qualities of a Good Leader

How often have you heard the comment, "He or she is a born leader?" There are certain characteristics found in some people that seem to naturally put them in a position where they're looked up to as a leader.

Whether in fact a person is born a leader or develops skills and abilities to become a leader is open for debate. There are some clear characteristics that are found in good leaders. These qualities can be developed or may be naturally part of their personality. Let us explore them further.

Seven Personal Qualities Found In A Good Leader

1. A good leader has an exemplary character. It is of utmost importance that a leader is trustworthy to lead others. A leader needs to be trusted and be known to live their life with honestly and integrity. A good leader "walks the talk" and in doing so earns the right to have responsibility for others. True authority is born from respect for the good character and trustworthiness of the person who leads.

2. A good leader is enthusiastic about their work or cause and also about their role as leader. People will respond more openly to a person of passion and dedication. Leaders need to be able to be a source of inspiration, and be a motivator towards the required action or cause. Although the responsibilities and roles of a leader may be different, the leader needs to be seen to be part of the team working towards the goal. This kind of leader will not be afraid to roll up their sleeves and get dirty.

3. A good leader is confident. In order to lead and set direction a leader needs to appear confident as a person and in the leadership role. Such a person inspires confidence in others and draws out the trust and best efforts of the team to complete the task well. 4. A leader also needs to function in an orderly and purposeful manner in situations of uncertainty. People look to the leader during times of uncertainty and unfamiliarity and find reassurance and security when the leader portrays confidence and a positive demeanor.

5. Good leaders are tolerant of ambiguity and remain calm, composed and steadfast to the main purpose. Storms, emotions, and crises come and go and a good leader takes these as part of the journey and keeps a cool head.

6. A good leader as well as keeping the main goal in focus is able to think analytically. Not only does a good leader view a situation as a whole, but is able to break it down into sub parts for closer inspection. Not only is the goal in view but a good leader can break it down into manageable steps and make progress towards it.

7. A good leader is committed to excellence. Second best does not lead to success. The good leader not only maintains high standards, but also is proactive in raising the bar in order to achieve excellence in all areas.

These seven personal characteristics are foundational to good leadership. Some characteristics may be more naturally present in the personality of a leader. However, each of these characteristics can also be developed and strengthened. a hotly debated topic.? Today many different groups have

adopted the Nautical star tattoo as a symbol for their own

movement and they have all ascribed their own meaning and

most everyone agrees that Sailors were the first people to get

relates back to sailing.? So this connection has been

right direction to get home.? So the star became a symbol

nautical stars on their forearms as a good luck symbol in

hopes of returning home.?

However their modern day meaning is a more debated topic.?

Many believe that groups including gay and lesbians, punk

rockers and those in the military have adopted the nautical

star tattoo as a very important symbol.? The diversity of

these three groups has lead many to argue the meaning of their

tattoos.

For the military the connection is pretty obviously point

back to the early sailors and the symbolism and meaning is the

same as the early sailors.? Many military people get a

nautical star tattoo as a symbol for finding ones path home

safely.? Of course this can also include more

symbolically just finding ones way in life.

services and his interpretation of the tattoo:

"I am in the United States Army, an MP who searched towns

and villages for Al Quida and insurgents. I was in Iraq for 1

year. I have a red and black nautical star on my wrist. The

reason I got it was because when I was out there, I felt it

was a guide to guide me home to my family safely. I got it so

that it would remind me that I am going to make it to see my

son grow up. I am not gay, it doesn't matter what you believe

it represents, it means something different for everyone. Out

in the desert, I would look up at the stars and think about

home. So anyone can think what they want to, that is what it

Punk rockers have also adopted this as a popular symbol to

have tattooed.? The punk movement traces its history and

use of the nautical star tattoo back to Sailor Jerry.?

Sailor Jerry is historically one one of the most famous tattoo

artists ever.? He was well known for his innovative and

"cool" designs.? Punks have taken this symbol and it has

very much the same meaning of finding one way in life.?

Being the rugged individualists type Punks are drawing to the

symbolism of true north and finding one own unique way in

life.? So the Nautical star has become a symbol for this.?

You see many punk bands that have full sleeve tattoos

typically incorporate nautical star tattoos either on their

elbows or elsewhere.

The lesbian and gay connection is the one that does not

seem so obvious at first.? Historically back in the

1940's and 50's when alternative lifestyles were not the norm

and often women had to hide their alternative choices they

would sport a hidden nautical star.? Often they would get

the star tattoo done on the inside of their wrist where it

could easily be hidden by a watch during the day but shown off

in the evening when out on the town.? Today many lesbians

where the nautical star tattoo to show their connection with

their early pioneering sisters.? Here is a little

evidence to support my points.??

"Here's the passage (with some pieces dropped) from "Boots

of Leather, Slippers of Gold: The History of a Lesbian

Community" by Elizabeth Lapovsky Kennedy and Madeilne D. Davis

copyright 1993 p. 189.

(talking about the 1940's and 1950's):

"...During this same time period, the cultural push to be

identified as lesbians- or at least different- all the time

was so powerful that it generated a new form of identification

among the tough bar lesbians: a star tattoo on the top of the

wrist, which was usually covered by a watch. This was the

first symbol of community identity that did not rely on

butch-fem imagery. We can trace this phenomenon back to an

evening of revelry in the late 1950's, when a few butches

trooped over to "Dirty Dick's" tattoo parlor on Chippewa

Street and had the tiny blue five-pointed star put on their

wrists. Later, some of the fems of this group also go the idea

one night and did it...The community views the tattoo as a

definite mark of identification..."the Buffalo police knew

[that] the people that had the stars on their wrist were

lesbians and they had their names and so forth. That it was an

identity thing with the gay community, with the lesbian

community". The fact that the star tattoo was created by those

who were firmly into roles, in fact by the group that was

considered the butchy butches and their fems, suggest that the

force to assert lesbian identity was strong enough to break

through the existing traditions of boldness based in butch-fem

roles. The stars presage the methods of identity created by

gay liberation. In fact, the mark has become something of a

tradition in local circles and has seen a revival since the

1970s."

This meaning of the symbol has of course created a lot of

problems and arguments among the other two groups of bearers

of nautical stars.? Most puck and military people do not

want to have a nautical star that points back to anything from

the lesbian movement so many will say that there is no

connection there and this is false.

Here is a quote from another armed forces member about the

symbolism of the nautical star among the gay community:

"This "gay symbol" is a load of hooey that someone made up

VERY recently. The nautical star tattoo has been around nearly

as long as tattooing itself. The late Celts (or early Irish,

depending on your view of World History) were said to have

been the first to have the tattoos, although evidence of it

being used on ships in Spain has been found pre-dating the

Irish claim.

As a Marine, it's a very commonplace symbol amongst us if

we have been part of a Boat Raid company, red for port, green

for starboard on varying parts of the body. On ship, I saw

about a million different variations on the Sailors I was was

serving with, obviously harking back to the sailor roots."

Here is a quote from a punk rocker and his feelings about

the symbolism of the tattoo:

"what idiots..even the military boys dont know what it

really means....JUST SO YOU ALL KNOW!!!!!it was used by OLD

sailors.. and the symbol represents North on a Map ...and it

is the North Star the sailors would use it as a baring to get

home....you can find it on Really really old maps and old navy

vessels... Punk Rock.. well we use it because we can and

because Sailor Jerry made the coolest tattoos who started

putting them on everyone.. my grandfather even had one thus

being used as a traditional icon"

It just goes to show that when the same powerful symbol is

used over and over again over decades of time it can taken on

very different meanings for different groups.? So all of

those that you see sporting a nautical star tattoo might not

all have the same interpretation of its symbolism.

As a landlord needing to evict tenants it is important to know which eviction notice to serve. There are a number of good information sources available to find this information, but it is always worth contacting a solicitor to ensure that it is done in the correct legal manner.

As a tenant there are certain steps that they need to take to terminate their tenancy agreement. Under normal circumstances they would give the landlord notice that they are leaving. Even if this is not written into the tenancy agreement, it is common courtesy to let the landlord know so that the landlord can begin necessary preparations to source new tenants when they vacate.

Different Types of Tenancy

If a tenant pays rent to a private landlord and live in a flat or house that is not shared with the landlord, the tenants are likely to have:

? an assured shorthold tenancy

? an assured tenancy, or

? a regulated tenancy

This applies even if the tenants have a room in a house that is shared with other people. The type of tenancy also depends on the date the tenants moved in.

Assured shorthold tenants

If tenants moved in after 27 February 1997, they are more likely to be on an assured shorthold tenancy agreement. Although it is still worth checking as tenants may be on an assured tenancy agreement if the landlord said that the tenancy would be an assured tenancy rather than an assured shorthold tenancy before they moved in.

An assured shorthold tenancy agreement gives the landlord a guaranteed right to repossess the property at the end of the term. This is the most common tenancy agreement used for most residential tenancies.

Assured tenants

If tenants move in after 15 January 1989 but before 28 February 1997 and the landlord didn't give notice stating that the tenancy agreement was to be an assured shorthold tenancy agreement, then it is likely that the tenants may have an Assured Tenancy. Although the landlord may have given the tenants a notice stating that the tenancy agreements is an assured tenancy rather than assured shorthold tenancy.

You may also be an assured tenant if you became the tenant because the tenancy was passed to you after a regulated tenant died.

Regulated tenants

If the tenants moved in before 15 January 1989, it is likely that the tenants will be on a regulated tenancy. A regulated tenancy can remain in place even if the landlord changes or the tenant moves to another property owned by the same landlord.

It is normal to have an increase in vaginal discharge during pregnancy, but it is best to discuss with a midwife or other health care professional the nature of the discharge in case of problems. The root causes behind vaginal discharge in pregnant women are the same as the causes in those who are not pregnant.

These causes are:

? Hormonal activity,

? Infection,

? Non-infective irritation,

? Cervical ectropion (cervical erosion)

Hormonal Activity

It is quite normal for increased hormonal activity to lead to an increase in normal vaginal emissions. Clear or whitish mucous based discharge known as Leukorrhea, which is non irritant and mild smelling, can increase substantially while pregnant. Panty liners can be used to control these increased emissions, but tampons and douching are not advised as they can cause problems.

Infection

Discharges that are smelly, discoloured, irritant or bloodstained need to be assessed for infection. This will probably involve the use of swabs in order to find out the type or types of infection suspected.

The two most common infections are:

? Candidiasis (thrush)

? Bacterial vaginosis

Candidiasis

Commonly known as thrush or yeast infection, emissions from candidiasis are characterised as being whitish or whitish grey in colour, having a lumpy consistency similar to cottage cheese and a yeasty smell like beer or baking bread. These infections occur when the yeast organisms, which are always present, are affected by certain conditions, including pregnancy, and become out of balance with the other natural micro organisms. For the treatment of thrush, various home remedies are said to work quite well. Ingestion or direct application of yoghurt will help to kill the yeast organisms as it contains lactobacillus which is a probiotic or "friendly bacteria". The use of garlic and boric acid are also said to be effective. Various prescription antifungal drugs exist to treat candidiasis:

? Clotrimazole (e.g. Canesten) whilst no adequate tests have been performed on pregnant women (as is common with most drugs), no adverse effects on the foetuses of pregnant animals have been found in tests.

? Nystatin (e.g. Mikostat, Mycostatin oral and Restatin) has a similar safety status to the above.

? Fluconazole (e.g. Diflucan, Flucand and Flucoheal) also has not been adequately tested on pregnant women.Tests on animals do indicate adverse effects and toxicity on foetuses but the drug could be prescribed if the benefits were thought to outweigh any potential dangers.

? Ketoconazole (e.g. Nizoral creams and shampoos) has a similar safety status to the above.

Other drugs are used in more severe cases, usually in hospitals.

Sugar intake is a factor that affects yeast infections, and it is sometimes recommended that cutting back on refined sugars is a good idea.

Bacterial Vaginosis

This condition is also related to the balance of micro organisms present in the vagina, and is characterised by watery non irritant discharge with an unpleasant fishy smell. BV is thought to increase the risk of premature labour threefold, so it is especially important that it is treated. Antibiotics like metronidazole (e.g. Anazol and Elyzol) are used to treat BV. This drug although not adequately tested on pregnant women, has not been found to indicate any risks to animal foetuses in studies

Other Infections

Trichomoniasis is usually transmitted through sexual intercourse. Symptoms include soreness and a greenish yellow or grey discharge that is foul smelling. It can affect both sexes, therefore partners must also be treated to avoid passing it back and forth. Treatment is usually by prescribed antibiotics.

Chlamydia is also sexually transmitted and sometimes results in discharge. It is more common to have light bleeding especially after intercourse and sometimes pain in the pelvic and lower abdominal region.

Always consult a midwife, doctor or health visitor if you suspect an infection before attempting any course of action.

Non Infective Irritations

Non infective irritation, or non infective vaginitis, is fairly self explanatory. The symptoms are irritation, itching and sometimes vaginal discharge without there being any infection. Causes of this condition can be:

? Reaction to toiletries, vaginal deodorants, fabric softeners etc,

? Wearing tights, exercise pants etc,

? Sweating,

? Wearing a wet bathing suit,

? Sexual activity.

Treatments for this condition should be discussed with a doctor. Precautionary measures include:

? Wearing cotton underwear

? Cleaning the vaginal area from front to back to avoid contamination

? Not wearing too constrictive clothing around vaginal area

? Not scratching

? Avoiding that which may trigger reaction, vaginal deodorants etc.

Cervical Ectropion (Cervical erosion)

This is a fairly common condition during pregnancy as it is affected by changes in hormones. It involves a shifting of a delicate membrane in the cervix area which contains mucus producing glands. This in turn can lead to vaginal discharge of a mucous like nature and also some light bleeding which is painless.

The Mucus Plug

The mucus plug is like a gel sealant inside the cervix which protects the foetus from infection by sealing the mouth of the uterus. Expulsion of the mucus plug is also sometimes called "bloody show". The mucous discharge is usually brownish yellow, sometimes pinkish in colour.

Along with a general increase and thickening of discharge that may occur as the pregnancy nears labour, there can be quite a lot of mucous when the mucous plug loosens, which can be a sign that labour is imminent. Although it could be a matter of hours, days or even weeks until the cervix becomes fully dilated.

Bleeding in Pregnancy

There are many reasons why vaginal bleeding may happen during pregnancy. Some of these reasons have already been covered. It is not unheard of for women to experience some bleeding during early pregnancy around the time they would normally have their menstrual cycle. In some cases this can continue throughout the pregnancy. There can also be some bleeding in the very early stages of pregnancy at the implantation stage of the fertilized egg. Bleeding can also occur later on due to the placenta embedding itself in the lining of the uterus.

Bleeding in early Pregnancy

Other reasons why bleeding could occur in the first trimester are threatened miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy. In the case of threatened miscarriage, bleeding can be brown spotting, blood stained discharge or bright red bleeding. There could also be abdominal pain. A midwife or doctor should be consulted if there is any vaginal bleeding.

The highest time of risk for miscarriages is immediately after implantation. It is estimated that 50% of all fertilized eggs fail to remain in place. This results in many unnoticed miscarriages as the eggs simply come away with normal or slightly delayed periods. It is thought that 80% of all miscarriages happen in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, often around the times when the monthly cycle should be.

Ectopic pregnancy is where the embryo is implanted outside the womb, usually in the fallopian tube. This is a potentially very dangerous condition which could lead to haemorrhaging if not diagnosed in time. Abdominal pain, caused as the tube becomes distended, tends to happen around the second month of pregnancy, and vaginal bleeding is often also present. A scan will be taken to confirm any diagnosis of suspected ectopic pregnancy.

Bleeding in later stages of Pregnancy

Any bleeding that takes place after 28 weeks is known as ante-partum haemorrhage and could be caused by one of two potentially serious conditions.

Placenta praevia occurs when a low lying placenta blocks the entrance to the cervix. This complication affects approximately 0.5% of pregnancies. Women who are at greater risk of placenta praevia include those who have had caesarean delivery or an abortion.

Placental abruption occurs when the placenta comes away from the wall of the womb. This occurs in about 1% of pregnant women. A major factor in this complication is maternal hypertension.

If bleeding suddenly occurs in the late stages of pregnancy, the women should lie down and arrangements should be made to immediately get her to hospital.

Best Man Toast

Giving the Best Man Toast at my brother's wedding was one of the scariest things that I have ever had to do. I really had not prepared at all for the moment. I loved my brother dearly and I really wanted this special moment for him and his bride to be perfect. But when I was called to give the speech what I really wanted to do was to crawl into a hole and disappear.

My difficulty that day was compounded by the fact that my wife was not seated with me. I was seated at the head table with the wedding party because I was the Best Man. The wedding party was seated at the front of the room on a platform that overlooked the reception area. I could see my wife doing battle with our kids. The kids where 13 months, 25 months, and 3 years old at the time. I could see the stress building up in her as she tried in vain to maintain control of 3 toddlers.

When it was finally my time to give the toast my lack of preparation, nervousness, and watching my wife do battle with the kids left me unfocused. The speech in my opinion was awful. If not for self-development books I would still be deeply embarrassed by my performance that day.

To help you avoid the same fate I would like to give you some tips that will help you prepare for giving a memorable Best Man Toast.

Tip #1

Remember that everyone gets nervous when giving a public speech. It's perfectly natural. You will be speaking to a supportive audience that wants to hear what you have to say. Everyone will be proud of you no matter what because you gave your best effort.

Take the time to actually thing about and write your speech before the wedding. Try to start off with a good hook that will get everyone's attention. 1. - Explain what you are doing:

2. - Setup a budget and stick to it:

Agree on a budget to invest on your online business and stick to it, no matter what. This will give her the peace of mind that you won't overload your credit cards.

3. Analyze where you spend your time:

Get a time tracker, (there are many free online), so you can analyze and see what you currently do with your time. The goal is to find "blank spots" so you can be more productive and do more activities in less time.

4. - Establish a Work Schedule:

Many of the discussions I've had with my wife have to do with the fact that she gets very angry when she sees that I'm in front of my computer every minute I'm not doing something specific.

5. - Spend more "Quality Time" with your family:

Please don't just stay at home watching TV with her, for quality time I mean do something interesting and fun, like dining in a nice restaurant, visiting new places, or do something she likes. Remember that monotony brakes relationships so try to show her that you care about her.
