The word is out. You can now register domain names of up to 67

characters. This is going to shoot your ranking way up on the

search engines. Because if you stuff all your keywords into your

domain name, search engines are simply going to love your site.

But is that really the truth?

No point speculating. Let's do a little test...

Go to your favorite search engine, say AltaVista. Key in your

search term, say "website promotion." Look at the top 10

rankings, closely.

How many of these top rankings actually have the full term

"website promotion" in their domains?

No hype, just facts.

Call me a natural sceptic if you want. When the news hit the

town, with all the "Special Announcements" flying everywhere,

urging people to "go grab a new all-you-can- stuff keyword rich

domain name and emerge tops in search engine ranking," I was not

at all moved. I believe this is too simplistic an approach to

getting high search engine placements:

1. Besides keywords in domain names, search engines look at a

few other factors for relevancy. In fact, this is what Don

Dodge, AltaVista's Director of Engineering said: "Keywords in

the domain name do not help much in ranking. We look at half a

dozen factors in ranking. The words on the page, their frequency

and position on the page, are still among the most important

factors."

2. Search engines are constantly evolving. Once they find out

that such keyword-stuffed domain names are content-poor sites

with low relevance, they are going to come up with new rules to

preclude such sites from getting the top spots.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not against registering for long domain

names. I just feel that we should see things in perspective. If

you're getting a long domain name in the hope of securing a high

search engine placement, err... based on the facts, please don't

expect miracles.

So what should we look for when choosing a domain name? I use a

simple "3 Es" guide:

1. Easy To Remember Yahoo is certainly easier to remember than

AltaVista. No surprise why Yahoo is doing a LOT better.

2. Easy To Spell If you have a long domain name, be careful. One

spelling mistake by a potential visitor is all you need to lose

him forever.

3. Easy To Pronounce If your domain name is hard to pronounce,

how do you expect people to spread the word and tell others

about it?

What do the 3 Es have in common? They make things simple for

your visitors! Our world is complex enough. We don't need

another complex domain.

Must your domain name be relevant to your site content? Not

necessarily. What has the name "Yahoo" got to do with a search

engine or a directory? And is there any real connection between

the words "Amazon" and "books"?

Selecting a domain name is an extremely important step. So do it

carefully.

What do you need to know about consumer awareness

Are you an individual, a common man who toils day and night, up and down to earn three meals a day? If yes, then do you at times come home depressed with a look of betrayal on your face? There can be reasons like someone withdrew cash from your credit card and you have no clue how; the television you purchased for your family is not properly functioning, the shopkeeper refused to take the onus even though the TV is in the warranty period or somebody stole the information from your email account by hacking it?...this is the plight of today's consumer, who at the end of the day comes back home defeated and cursing his fate and today's world.

But one should never forget that God only helps those who help themselves. You can never be beaten unless you admit that you have lost; similarly no one can deceive you unless you let him do so. Thus, it is time for the consumers to wake up and realize that nothing will happen by sitting hands on hands, more than talking of action, one should believe in implementing or doing it. Howsoever one may try it is impractical to erase theft, fraud etc. form our society. In this case the only option left is to take preventive measures.

? The first and the foremost step for a consumer to prevent himself from cheating is to keep his eyes and ears open. Know or be aware of what is happening around you. Read the cases of various scams, thefts, burglaries, phishing scams etc. in that are highlighted in your local newspaper and also seen on television. This will keep you informed and conscious of what is going on and what can unfortunately even happen with you.

? Learn from the mistakes of your neighbors. If a shopkeeper has given a malfunctioning gadget to your neighbor, do not make the mistake of going to that shop. If somebody stole important mails from their mailbox, do make it a point to collect all your crucial mails directly from the post office.

? Never reveal personal identity to a stranger. You go for a morning walk and a man over their tries to be extra amiable even asks you to come home for lunch etc. does not imply that he wants your friendship or that he is a genuine person. So do not disclose your residence, telephone numbers, your workplace numbers etc. to him unless you gather complete information from a known person about him. Avoid giving personal details on phone. If you receive calls from unknown place that offers you some benefits and asks for your particulars, don't be carried away by that. Tell your particulars only when you are sure that the call is genuine and that there is no other way out.

? Do not rely much on courier services. If you an access to the place where you have to deliver the parcel, take out some time and go yourself.

? Do not hand over your credit or debit cards even to your friends. It is foolish to trust someone blindly nowadays. Never tell your friends or colleagues to check your mails while you are holidaying with your family. It is not wise to let others know your password and mails.

? When you are out for shopping in the market, do not carry much cash. Keep the tentative amount and credit or debit card in case of emergency. This will not only help you do a regulated shopping but will also save you from many pitfalls.

? Before purchasing any commodity, always read the manufacturing date, the expiry date and the MRP carefully.

? Never forget to take all the bills and an assurance for the warranty period. Take the bills for each and every thing you buy and it is advisable to take things on a longer warranty basis even if you have to pay a little more for it.

? If while coming back home you lose your wallet, call up the police and register your complaint. This can protect you from the illegal use your documents by the one who picks them up. It is better that you de not carry your essentials every time you move out of the house.

? Keep all the emergency numbers (like the social security unit of your area, the police station number etc.) stored in your mobile phone. Also what is vital for your security is to keep a back up record in a diary of all the essential numbers in your phone and addresses. This will facilitate you with all the information in case you lose your mobile phone.

Vegetarian enough?

People often tell me about how they get grief from people who are "more" vegetarian than them. Isn't that strange? People who can be bothered to make a life changing decision are then chastised by the super veggies for not trying hard enough.

When I became vegetarian back in the day yardy, yardy, yardy suits for half a dollar etc, it was a minor miracle to even hear of another veggie, at least where I came from. When you occasionally met one you befriended them like you had both got 2 heads. Now we have this hierarchy and terminology and different raison d'être vegetarian. So I ask myself "what am I?" At this point in time I do not eat meat, fish, seafood, insects (coloring) or knowingly anything containing any of the afore mentioned. That makes me a vegetarian.

Or does it? Up until very recently I ate free-range eggs, honey, cheese and wore leather shoes. So am I as bad as the rest of the uncaring and unenlightened world? But wait I care about animal rights, I do not drink milk and yesterday I bought my first vegan cheese. I have campaigned against the wearing of fur (also for free speech ). So apart from a ranting idiot what am I?

OK we have to have some new terms for ourselves and let's see if we can get the world to adopt them. How about vegetarian-plus? Normal veggie but no milk or eggs or vegan-minus because she still has a leather handbag. If the more hard-line of you are still with me at this point please do not think I am trying to trivialize this subject as anyone who knows me will tell you I am very passionate about it. I just feel that sometimes the people who are at the beginning of their vegetarianism need a hand up not a hand off.

Do you know that I did not know about the range of vegan cheeses until yesterday when I found them in a health food shop. I feel I am moving more and more towards the vegan diet so I will keep you informed.

"What a difference!" This is what my friend Beth wrote to me recently, "Dear Cris, Just a few months ago I thought I would have to finally get a second job to raise some cash to buy another mode of transportation. Headers, Tags, and Titles - Search engines continue to evolve but there are a few things you still can do to give them a clue about what's on your website. One is to include your keywords in header tags. Additionally, craft a one or two sentence description that explains the content of each page, including some keywords from the page. This should go between the Head tags. Finally, you should write short, descriptive titles for each page. Don't use the same one for each.

Keywords - Look at your website copy. Are your keywords in the first paragraph? They should be because that is where the search engines expect to find them. But don't go overboard with keywords.

SEO - The above tips actually are fairly basic SEO activities, but there are some higher level SEO tactics that will help raise you site above the crowd. Hyperlink your keywords to make them stand out for both search engines and for carbon-based web visitors. Make the linked keyword more noticeable to search engines by linking it to a page that uses the keyword in its address.
